Women in Natural Resources (WiNR) Fall Events List 2014
Women in Natural Resources (WiNR) is a student organization in the College of Natural Resources that encourages
awareness and participation of women interested in our natural resources. We invite speakers to address such issues as
professional opportunities, educational information, and activities that we can participate in to conserve our resources.
We also organize many fun activities throughout the semester!
WiNR membership dues ($5.00/year or $3/semester) will be collected if you choose to join.
WiNR Apparel orders are due by October 10th!!.
Board Member Meetings are bi-weekly Wednesdays, 3-4 pm, TNR 122: Oct. 8, 15, 22; Nov. 5, Nov 19; Dec
3.
Gearing up for a Career in Natural Resources - Mon, Oct. 6, 6:00 - 7:00 pm, TNR 120: Learn all about
the different types of outdoor gear that is essential for a career out in the field. We will also review the
various websites and the best stores to purchase these items. Learn how/what essentials to pack for a trip in
the outdoors.
Internship night/ photo and scrapbooks - Mon, Oct. 13, 6:00 – 7:00 pm, TNR 122: Join us for 2-3 brief
presentations on internships completed this past summer by your fellow WiNR members. While listening to
the presentations, bring photos and photo albums that you would like to fill with your summer experiences!
CNR Major’s Night-Thurs, Oct. 16, 5:00-8:00pm: All CNR freshman, sophomores plus undeclared majors
will be invited to this event. CNR professors will be doing presentations to students about their career fields.
There will also be free food and door prizes! This year we are working in conjunction with the WI Science
Festival so are inviting local high school students and their parents to attend, too! Set-up booth.
Apple Picking/ Pumpkin Patch – tentatively Sat or Sun, Oct. 18 or 19, Location TBD: Come along for a
Fall/Harvest adventure to pick apples and pumpkins for our Fall bake sale. We will then carve and cook them
the following Monday.
Stress Bake - Mon, Oct. 20, 6:00 - 9:00 pm, Suites dorm kitchen: “Stressed is just Desserts spelled
backwards”. Relieve your mid-term stress by baking it away! Meet us in the Suites kitchen for a stress bake
to make desserts for our fall bake sale.. We will be scooping and cooking various flavored pumpkin seeds,
making pumpkin flavored desserts, making apples pies, and other fall themed desserts. Bring your backing
items and creative ideas!
Fall Harvest Bake Sale - Tues, Oct. 21, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, TNR West Lobby: Volunteer at our fall themed
Bake Sale table or donate some delicious treats to raise funds for Makah- Water for ALL. All proceeds will
go to Makah to provide and build water pumps for clean water in Cameroon communities.
Native American Speaker, Snow Galvan- Mon, Nov. 3rd, 6:00 -7:00 pm, TNR 122: Kick-off Native
American Month with Snow as she discusses her previous work at a Native American school and their use of
Natural Resources to teach their students.
Growing Power/Urban Ecology Center- Sat & Sun, Nov. 8th & 9th, Milwaukee, WI: Expand your
knowledge on natural resources within urban communities. We will visit Growing Power, a nonprofit org
that focuses on supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds by providing equal access and training on
sustainable community food systems. The Urban Ecology Center focuses on developing ecological
understanding through outdoor science youth education, preserving and enhancing natural areas, as well as
practicing and modeling environmentally responsible behaviors.
Dry-Race Dog Sledding Volunteer – Sat & Sun, Nov. 15th & 16th , Wausau, WI: Volunteer in Wausau, WI
at a dry-race dog sledding competition. WiNR will aid in keeping the dogs distracted as well as bringing the
dog to the race line…. Cuddles and petting are appreciated . What a GREAT way to volunteer your time!
Natural Products Craft Night- Mon, Nov. 17th, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, TNR 320: Join us for a night of natural
craft making for our craft sale on Dec. 4th. Cookie Jars, hand balm, and more!
WiNR Elections- Mon, Dec. 1st, 6:00 -7:00 pm, TNR 122: Aid us in electing our officers for the 2015-2016
year! Applications are due by Friday Nov. 21st. You can view applications online at the WiNR website.
Holiday Craft Sale- Wed and Thurs, Dec. 3 & 4, 9:00 am - 4 pm, DUC Concourse Tables: Support our
Holiday Craft Sale and buy presents for the Holidays! If you are interested in volunteering please contact
Molly O’Grady.
