Fisheries Field and Laboratory Technicians Agency/Location: Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University. The field site is located in Cheboygan County, Michigan. Responsibilities: Field technicians (N=4) are needed to assist in ongoing lake sturgeon research. The successful candidate will join a long-term collaborative study between Michigan State University and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources being conducted on the Black River in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. Field work would include capture of adults, collection of gametes and larvae using multiple sampling techniques, collection of stream physical (flow, temperature, substrate, etc) and biotic (invertebrate, fish community) data, acoustic telemetry, assisting with laboratory predator-prey and growth experiments. Work will be conducted throughout the spring and summer, in all weather conditions. This will include long hours of in-stream research. Hatchery technicians (N=2) are needed to assist in fish production and experimental research at the egg and larval stages at our stream-side research facility. Qualifications: Applicants should have an interest in fisheries science and be enrolled in a biological degree program such as fisheries, zoology, natural resources or allied fields or have a completed BS degree. A valid driver’s license is required. Experience with handling of live fish and use of fisheries sampling and assessment equipment would be beneficial. Two positions will involve scuba Salary: $6000. These are 3-4 month positions. Two positions will begin in late-March. Other positions are available beginning in April or as soon as possible thereafter. Hatchery Technician Agency/Location: Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery, in conjunction with Michigan State University, East Lansing Michigan Responsibilities: A hatchery technician is needed to assist in our ongoing lake sturgeon research program. The successful candidate will join a long-term collaborative study between Michigan State University, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Sturgeon for Tomorrow being conducted on the Black River in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. Work will involve spawning adults and husbandry and maintenance of a juvenile lake sturgeon, along with stocking and stream assessment. . Successful applicants will also be required to transport larval and juvenile lake sturgeon to and from the field site and a participating fish hatchery. There will be opportunities to work with hatchery personnel in all areas of fish culture on other species. Qualifications: Applicants should have an interest in fisheries science and be enrolled in a biological degree program or have a completed BS degree.
