Duties include directing individual tree marking on the ground using marking guides prepared by silviculturist; adapting guidelines to field situations; laying out treatment units; traversing project areas and determining acreage, and serving as qualified cruiser directing the crew and collecting cruise data. Caring for the Land and Serving People Printed on Recycled Paper Duties may include thinning of stands of trees with use of chainsaw. Also, may conduct stand exams, and assist with reforestation layout. The position also has the opportunity to be involved with fire suppression and prescribed fire. The incumbents provide technical and administrative supervision to three or more temporary employees, and may supervise a permanent seasonal employee. They may also have contract inspection responsibilities. SAN JUAN NATIONAL FOREST The San Juan National Forest is headquartered in Durango, Colorado. More than 1.2 million acres of Southwest Colorado are managed on the San Juan. Primary resource management activities include recreation, range and timber management, fisheries, water quality, fire, fuels and heritage and cultural resources. The Weminuche Wilderness is located on the Forest and is over 450,000 acres in area. The San Juan Mountains on the Forest have many peaks over 10,000 feet. The Forest has three Ranger Districts located in Pagosa Springs, Bayfield and Dolores. The Pagosa Ranger District covers over 550,000 acres. Approximately 106,750 acres of the Weminuche Wilderness Area and approximately 70,900 acres of the South San Juan Wilderness Area lie within the jurisdiction of the Pagosa District. The District special management areas include Williams Creek RNA (600 acres) and part of the Piedra Management Area. In 2012, the District celebrated the designation of Chimney Rock National Monument. The mountainous terrain contains several peaks over 12,000 feet. COMMUNITY Pagosa Springs, seat of Archuleta County, is located in Southwest Colorado 35 north of the central New Mexico border with a population of approximately 1,600 (about 12,000 in the county). The elevation is 7,079 feet above sea level. Average precipitation is 17.35”, much of that coming as snow (67.4” annually). There are approximately 300 days of sunshine. The warmest month is July with an average daytime high temperature at 83 F degrees and average low at 45. The coldest month is January, with a high of 39◦F and a low of 1◦F Pagosa Springs offers a variety of businesses as well as numerous summer and winter recreational opportunities. Wolf Creek Ski Area, natural hot springs, performing arts center and museums are just a few of the area attractions. Pagosa Springs showcases many arts and entertainment events throughout the year. Travelers and new residents come to the region for the solitude and unspoiled atomosphere. Pagosa Springs has one elementary school (K-4), one intermediate (5-6), one junior high (7-8) and one high school with a several private school options.
