USDA Forest Service, Eastern Region
Biological Science Technician (Plants) GS – 0404– 4
Biological Science Aid GS-0404-3
Duty Station: White Lake, Wisconsin
Outreach Closes: March 15, 2014
The Eastern Region of the USDA Forest Service intends to hire a Biological Science Technician
(Plants) at the GS-4 level (Job Series GS-0404-4) and a Biological Science Aid at the GS-3 level
(Job Series GS-404-03). These will be temporary positions that do not exceed 1039 hours of employment. These positions will be located at the Oconto River Seed Orchard and the official duty station will be White Lake, Wisconsin. The intention is to fill both of these positions with full time employees that work during the summer, but part time employment for a longer period of time might be considered for one or both positions.
The Oconto River Seed Orchard produces tree seed that is used for reforestation and restoration on national forests in the Great Lakes States. It also screens trees for disease and insect resistance, does gene and species conservation work throughout the Eastern Region and helps establish test plantations designed to produce information needed by land managers. It is located in rural, northeastern Wisconsin. The seed orchard is located 30 miles north of Keshena, 24 miles east of Antigo, and 60 miles northwest of Green Bay. There is a lot of publicly owned land in the area and many opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The people in these positions will support the permanent employees of the seed orchard. These employees will maintain plants in a greenhouse by watering and fertilizing; maintain plants in field plantings by transplanting, weeding and mowing; produce tree seed by picking cones and cleaning seed; collect and enter data; and do minor facility maintenance. Depending on the applicant’s previous experience and training they might also operate various types of power equipment. Most of the work will be outdoors, although there will be some work in a greenhouse, shop or office environment.
The hourly wage is $12.07 at the GS-3 level and $13.55 at the GS-4 level. The GS-3 level requires at least 6 months of general experience. The GS-4 level requires at least 6 months of specialized experience at the GS-3 level or the equivalent in addition to 6 months of general experience. In some cases, post secondary education may be substituted for some or all of the experience.
This position is a good opportunity for someone to become familiar with the USDA Forest
Service and to learn the basics of growing tree seedlings.
