UWSP Summer Intern Forester Position Description –
Peshtigo River State Forest
About the Peshtigo River State Forest:
The PRSF is a 9,200-acre state forest that was established in 2002 in Marinette and Oconto
counties. The forest operates and maintains 1 16-unit family campground (Old Veteran’s Lake
Campground), 15 primitive campsites, 10 miles of skiing and hiking trails, more than 25 miles of
snowmobiling and ATV trails, and 15 boat launch sites. Current staff on the state forest includes
the forest superintendent, a forester, and a law enforcement ranger. During the spring – fall
months, various seasonal employees join the team to perform a range of maintenance, law
enforcement, visitor services, and forest management duties.
The PRSF shares its office and shop facilities with the Governor Thompson State Park.
These facilities are located on the state park property. The closest town to our office is Crivitz, WI,
which is about 16 miles.
Economical housing is available on the state forest property. Rent is $110 / month and
includes heat, water and electricity. The rental house is located 1 mile from the state park and office.
The rental house is furnished with appliances (including washer and dryer), beds, couches and chairs.
It is possible that you will share the house with other seasonal employees that work on the state park
or forest, but you will likely have your own bedroom.
Because the majority of the funding for the position is coming from a grant, the applicants must
qualify for at least $4,600 of financial need as determined by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Financial Aid Office. Consequently, we will be collecting applications in-house [Melinda and I] and checking to
see if they meet the financial criterion before the applications are sent to the employer.
