Visit our Website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hmnf/ Outreach Notice Forestry Technician (Reforestation/TSI) GS-0462-5/6/7 Permanent/Full Time Huron-Manistee National Forests Huron Shores Ranger Station Oscoda, Michigan Description of Duties: This position serves as a Forestry Technician on the Huron Shores Ranger Station with principal duties being the reforestation and timber stand improvement programs. This is a non-supervisory position, although the incumbent provides direction to other employees on specific projects. The incumbent’s primary duties will consist of accomplishing the District’s yearly site preparation, TSI, stand exams, and planting workload. This involves all aspects of contracting including serving as a Contracting Officer Representative (COR), developing contracts, and conducting stocking surveys. The position is also responsible for contract development and the contract award process. The incumbent will be responsible for spatial and accomplishment data entry in GIS and FACTS, and preparing reports. As a vegetation management staff member, he/she provides technical input for project development and preparation of NEPA documents, and on occasion will assist in drafting silviculture prescriptions. The incumbent will assist with timber sale preparation duties as needed and will be an active member of District’s wildfire suppression and prescribed fire operations as qualifications allow. Community Description Oscoda, located at the mouth of the Au Sable River on the Lake Huron coast, has a population of approximately 900 and offers many amenities. Most shopping can be done locally but a larger metropolitan area (Alpena) is located less than an hour to the north or (Bay City, Saginaw, and Midland) is located less than two hours away for those seeking expanded opportunities. The Oscoda community is home to churches of various denominations. Many civic and fraternal organizations are also available. The Oscoda Area Schools provide education in grades K-12 with Alpena Community College offering college courses locally. Doctors and dentists are available locally with hospitals located in Tawas (20 miles) and Alpena (45 miles). Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant with great fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, and winter sports activities. Government housing may be available for a short-term basis within walking distance of the ranger station.
