Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program Intern

Type of position: Student hourly

Wage: $9/hour

Work schedule: 30 hours per week for 12 weeks during the summer: starting late May or early June and continuing until mid to late August. Background check required prior to appointment.

Location: Environmental Resources Center, 445 Henry Mall, Rm 202, Madison WI

Administrative Relationships: This position will work at the Cooperative Extension Environmental

Resources Center as an assistant for Water Action Volunteers (WAV), the statewide volunteer streammonitoring program.

Position Responsibilities: We are seeking a responsible, conscientious student to assist with this dynamic citizen science program. The primary responsibility of the intern will be to develop short training videos to be posted online that will aid citizens in carrying out stream monitoring. Ideally, both

English and Spanish versions of the videos will be developed. In addition, position responsibilities may include:

• Conducting field-based volunteer stream monitoring methods quality assurance checks with citizen monitors

Assisting with volunteer stream monitoring and other citizen science trainings and workshops

• Assisting with online WAV database organization and management

Assisting in day-to-day activities with the WAV program

• Shadowing other staff from the UW-Extension Environmental Resources Center to better understand potential job opportunities within the organization

Due to the nature of this program, work may be outside and require moving over unstable or uneven ground.

This position will provide the intern with an excellent resume-building opportunity to learn about and contribute to the exciting field of citizen science.

Position Expectations: Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential. Applicants should be detail-oriented and

have the ability to follow specific standard operating procedures. Each applicant must also be enrolled in an institute of higher education (four-year college, two-year college, technical college, or graduate school). Applicants should also have a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel throughout the state.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of videography and digital editing software and techniques.

Proficiency in Spanish. Coursework in environmental science, water resources, biology, or related field.

Basic computer skills including working with the Microsoft Office suite of products.
