Job Description Position: Classification: Reports to: Head of Trips Nonexempt (Seasonal) Program Director Position Purpose: The Head of Trips is responsible for organizing, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating the out of camp trip program so as to meet the goals of Clearwater Camp. Essential Job Functions: Develop and deliver a trip program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers and staff. With the other trip and appropriate camp staff, plan, coordinate, implement and supervise all Clearwater out-of-camp trips, including pack outs. Ensure that the skills necessary for a safe and fun trip are taught before campers leave camp, including personal and group health and safety, outdoor cooking and camping, comfortable travel methods, maintenance and care of equipment, emergency procedures, etc. Lead and teach campers in applicable outdoor program areas, including backpacking, boating, or camping trips. Plan itineraries and file with designated personnel before leaving for each trip. Implement principles of minimal impact camping and appreciation of the natural world. Evaluate abilities of campers related to the proposed trip. Coordinate with the camp nurse before and after trips to monitor camper health during and following trips. With the assistance of campers and staff, ensure that vehicles are packed and loaded with all necessary camping and safety equipment, food, and water for the trip. Complete all assigned reports, record keeping, and parent communications as assigned. Ensure that parents of all extended trip participants are notified of trip itineraries in advance. Evaluate the success of the tripping program with campers and staff, both during and at the end of the program. 2. Organize, direct and supervise staff in order to meet the intended camper outcomes. With the other trip and appropriate camp staff, ensure that the skills necessary for a safe and fun trip are taught before staff leave camp, including camper supervision, personal and group health and safety, outdoor cooking and camping, comfortable travel methods, maintenance and care of equipment, emergency procedures, etc. Lead and teach staff in applicable outdoor program areas, including backpacking, boating, or camping trips. Assess staff skills and schedule trip assignments accordingly. Assist in training staff to utilize positive youth development principles when working with campers on trips, including communication, relationship development, involvement and empowerment of campers. Communicate effectively with trip staff and counselors, including working together to provide successful and appropriately challenging trips for campers. Debrief with campers and staff at the end of every trip, including evaluating how well each trip met intended goals. Incorporate feedback throughout the summer to improve effectiveness of trip program. 3. Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow established safety guidelines. Review, revise and update trip procedures according to standards set by the American Camp Association and the State of Wisconsin, including updating closest emergency care. With the assistance of trip and other appropriate camp staff, plan and lead the training of camp staff during orientation, including all established safety and operational guidelines. Ensure that campers and staff are properly oriented to trip safety procedures prior to leaving camp. Ensure that appropriately certified and trained camp staff members are assigned to lead trips requiring specialized training. Be prepared to enact written emergency procedures in the event of accident or illness. 4. Oversee the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the tripping area. Responsible for overseeing maintenance of trip equipment, including camping equipment, pack-out and cook out equipment, and trailers. Responsible for implementing established vehicle safety checks, including monitoring tire pressure. Ensure the security of the trip equipment when not in use. Ensure that staff conducts a check of equipment before and after each use, for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. Responsible for notifying appropriate personnel of damaged or unusable equipment, including vehicles. Other Job Duties: Communicate with the Program Director, Associate Director, Executive Director, and Camp Nurse to ensure a safe and smoothly operating trip program at all times. Oversee coordination with appropriate activity staff (such as swim staff) to ensure adequate skills of trip participants. Oversee communication with Food Service Director to coordinate meal numbers. Responsible for ordering, packing, and unpacking food for trips. Responsible for coordinating trip transportation. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. Assist in the planning of any special events. Qualifications (Minimum qualifications and experience) Current certification in tripping instruction or documented training and experience. Current Wilderness First Responder certification, including current CPR certification. Current Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Certification. Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Training and experience in organizing and leading progressively challenging outdoor trips. Experience teaching tripping skills to staff and children. Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions. Skills in outdoor program design particular to the type of tripping and camping activities assigned. Previous experience leading wilderness trips and/or student experience such as with NOLS, Outward Bound, or similar programs. Physical Aspects of the Position Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff. Ability to communicate necessary information to administrative staff. Cognitive and communication abilities to plan, make decisions and oversee emergencies. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Physical ability and stamina to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers. Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds, including lifting and carrying wilderness gear. Ability to perform job responsibilities during daylight and nighttime hours. Physical ability to prepare for, participate in, and lead campers in wilderness activities involving tripping activities specific to this camp and position. Physical endurance including walking, hiking, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility and environment available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and exposure to various animals, plants, and environmental conditions.
