Description of Internship at Hawk’s Nest
Canoe Outfitters:
Hawks Nest Canoe Outfitters offers day trips for canoeing, kayaking,
rafting, tubing and canoe camping including partial and complete
outfitting.
We are seeking interns who are highly motivated “people persons”
who have good work ethics and skills and have a love and knowledge
of the out of doors, including camping, canoeing, fishing and other
related activities.
1. Length - The internship consists of 16 weeks through the summer.
This time frame is negotiable.
2. Stipend – $5000 plus housing and utilities. Because you are doing an
internship, the IRS states to treat you as an independent contractor.
Therefore no taxes are withheld. You would receive the full $5000 for
the summer with 8 payments of $625 to be paid ever every 2 weeks.
3. Work Experience - Work an average of 40 hours per week. This may
include weekends and holidays.
4. Work Locations - We have two locations:
Eagle River, Wisconsin on state Hwy. 70 on the Wisconsin River. Staff
is housed here in a mobile home where they will share a kitchen, bathroom
and living area, with two employees per bedroom. It is also possible to
have your own room.
Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin on state Hwy 51 on the Manitowish
River. Staff is housed in two large dorm rooms. There is a separate
kitchen and bath room.
This is the only canoe base where you maintain, clean, pack, and
un-pack camping equipment and food.
5. Work description
The Internship provides learning by doing. Hands on experience is the
best method of learning there is. We try to vary the jobs you do each day
so you are not doing the same thing all week long.
Duties include renting canoes, kayaks, tubes and rafts and providing our
clientele shuttle services to their selected drop-off or pick-up points along
the river. You will work with a team of four or five other staff members
each day which will share the lifting of equipment onto or off trailers
including, but not limited to canoes, kayaks, etc. One day you could be
helping people at the waterfront as they get into their canoes and the next
you could be driving the van for shuttle service. Then, the next day you
could be fixing leaks in the tubes and rafts in the morning followed by
working in the front office booking trips for the afternoon.
You will also be involved with public relations and promotion as we are
members of 15 different chambers of commerce and work closely with the
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
We will help develop managerial, supervisory, and administrative skills
that will enable an intern to function in a variety of occupations.
- To broaden the interns’ concept of leisure and provide experiences that
will aid in understanding human behavior in recreation services.
- To supplement the student’s classroom experience and allow for
adjustment or redirection of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- To provide the student an opportunity to gain practical experience under
professional supervision in realistic situations.
- To assist the student in future employment by providing professional
experience, job contacts, personal references, and other forms of
assistance.
Interns must be 19-21 years or older and have no DUI’s on their driving records.
Upon applying for these positions we need your birth date, and driver’s license
number for insurance purposes to be cleared to drive our company vehicles.
