Academic Internship Course
The Marriott School encourages all students to add value to their academic education with an internship
related to their major. As students receive hands-on work experience within the internship, they are able
to assess their interests, gain confidence, and develop professional skills. Many students have found that
internships are the best route to full-time employment following graduation.
Course Requirements:
One credit hour requirements:
 Complete at least 50 hours of work
 Complete Syllabus Quiz on Learning Suite
 Submit interview question responses each week during the internship
 Submit Intern Evaluation and Report Your Internship by the end of the internship
Two credit hour requirements:
 Complete at least 100 hours of work
 Complete Syllabus Quiz on Learning Suite
 Submit interview question responses each week during the internship
 Schedule and complete the final presentation and mock interview.
 Submit Intern Evaluation and Report Your Internship by the end of the internship
Three credit hour requirements:
 Complete at least 150 hours of work
 Complete Syllabus Quiz on Learning Suite
 Submit interview question responses each week during the internship
 Submit either Company Report (option 1) or Executive Interview Report (option 2) by the end
of the internship
 Schedule and complete the final presentation and mock interview.
 Submit Intern Evaluation and Report Your Internship by the end of the internship
All work must be submitted on time to receive full credit. Any late work will lose points or receive half
credit. If an employer gives an unsatisfactory evaluation at the conclusion of the internship, the student’s
grade will be evaluated and the student will be required to meet with the head of the internship
department.

At the end of your internship, assume responsibility for having your supervisor complete the Intern
Evaluation Form, which can be found on the Marriott School Internship home page.

Report Your Internship
This is not a required assignment, but we strongly encourage students to report their internship so that
future students may benefit from your experience. You may report your internship on the Marriott School
Internship home page.

Syllabus Quiz
This quiz is meant to make sure students understand the requirements of this course. This quiz is due
during the first week of your internship. This quiz is worth 70 points. You may refer to the syllabus during
the quiz.
Weekly Assignments (1,2, and 3 credit)
Student must complete interview assignments by the end of each week. Weekly assignments are due the
following Monday at 8:00 AM (MST). Assignments turned in on Monday should cover the previous week’s
activity. Weekly interview assignments are to be completed on Learning Suite.
These assignments are to help students remember experiences that would be helpful in an interview
setting. Each response should be at least one paragraph per question. Answer these questions like you
would in an interview. Each answer should be at least 1 paragraph. Weekly assignments will lose points
for every week that is late.
Spring and Summer: complete two questions per week.
Fall and Winter: complete one question per week.
If your internship doesn’t start during the first week of class or if there is a break in your internship, please
let your TA know through e-mail.
IMPORTANT: If a weekly assignment is missed, you must e-mail the internship office
msm_internship@byu.edu OR msminternship@gmail.com and let us know immediately.
Report your hours
Students must report the number of hours worked every week with their weekly assignment through
Learning Suite.
Company Report (Mid-Point Paper Option 1) (3 credit)
The purpose of this paper is to help you gain a greater knowledge of your internship provider and to
better prepare you for a more meaningful internship experience. It should also help solidify whether or
not you would want to work for your internship provider after graduation.
Although, you will be doing research on your company, this report must be your own work. Reports
should be 5-6 pages double-spaced; graphs and photos may be included, but they will be deducted from
the total page count. For each section of the paper you are encouraged to use headings, preferably the
appropriate headings we provide you in the following rubric. Please submit your paper to
msm_internship@byu.edu or MSMINTERNSHIP@GMAIL.COM before midnight on the last day of class.
Every student has different start and end dates, we only require that the mid-point paper be submitted by
the last day of class. However, you may submit the paper sooner if you like. We highly recommend that
you finish this assignment and submit it half way through the semester or term. This flexible deadline will
accommodate our busy interns’ unpredictable schedules. Don’t use it as an excuse to procrastinate! This
assignment is due on the last day of class for the term or semester enrolled.

Executive Interview Report (Mid-Point Paper Option 2) (3 credit)
This assignment should be a detailed review of one or more visits with a company executive. Students
should prepare an outline of questions to discuss in the interview. Questions asked should pertain to the
executive's career path, business philosophy, advice for achieving success, critical decisions or actions that
made a difference in the company, advice in balancing family life and business, leadership styles, and
future plans for the company. Discuss their successes, failures and "hindsight" from these experiences.
This paper is to be written in your own words, not a list of questions and answers. At least half of the
report should be your own reflections and thoughts about what you learned from the executive interview,
and how it may be helpful in your professional career. Reports should be 3-4 pages double-spaced. For
each section of the paper you are encouraged to use headings. Please submit paper using the Turnit-In
system found under the ‘Reports’ tab in Learning Suite. Naming conventions are irrelevant. Please submit
your paper to msm_internship@byu.edu or MSMINTERNSHIP@GMAIL.COM before midnight on the last
day of class.
This paper is due by the last day of class for the semester or term you are enrolled. You are strongly
encouraged not to procrastinate this assignment; however, it is not the responsibility of the TA to remind
you to complete this assignment. Wise students will not procrastinate the mid-point assignment until the
end of the semester or term.

Final Presentation and Interview (2 and 3 credit)
This presentation and interview are the equivalent of your final exam for this class.
This PowerPoint presentation should focus on one of your projects, or a compilation of projects, you were
assigned to during your internship. Include comments about knowledge and skills you gained from the
internship, and your application of on-the-job and classroom learning.
PowerPoint presentation should be 10 minutes in length. Practice your presentation in advance to make
sure that you can cover all the required material in a timely manner. Please contact the Internship Office
to schedule a presentation time to meet with an internship advisor.
After the presentation you will have a short interview with questions from your weekly assignment
question bank located in Learning Suite. This is a chance to practice applying your recent experiences in
an interview setting. Students who are working out of state will email their PPT presentation and
schedule a phone interview.

Plagiarism
For this course any form of plagiarism is unacceptable. Any papers found to be plagiarized, in any form,
will result in a failing grade for the course. Intentional Plagiarism: Intentional plagiarism is the deliberate
act of representing the words, ideas, or data of another as one's own without providing proper attribution
to the author through quotation, reference, or footnote. Inadvertent Plagiarism: Inadvertent plagiarism
involves the inappropriate, but not deliberate, use of another's words, ideas, or data without proper
attribution. Inadvertent plagiarism usually results from an ignorant failure to follow established rules for
documenting sources or from simply being insufficiently careful in research and writing. Although not a
violation of the Honor Code, inadvertent plagiarism is a form of academic misconduct for which an
instructor can impose appropriate academic sanctions. Students who are in doubt as to whether they are
providing proper attribution have the responsibility to consult with their instructor and obtain guidance.
