Offline Syllabus MATH 240 Prealgebra Spring Semester 2009 Instructor: Mrs. Ruby Payne Phone: 763-7930 Email: rpayne@taft.org Text: Prealgebra Third Edition Lial/Hestwood Course Information • Tests (80%): The course will cover chapters 1-10. A chapter test will be given at the end of each chapter and a final exam at the end of the semester. No make-up exams will be given. Any missed test will receive a score of 0. Students will be allowed to use their notes on tests. A calculator may be used on all tests except Chapter 1. Students will be allowed to drop one test. Grades will be calculated by averaging all test scores including the final exam. Each chapter test will be about 1 to 1.5 hours in length and will cover the material in the homework assignments. The final exam will be comprehensive and will have a time limit of 3 hours. All tests are due on Wednesday of the week. • • • • • Homework (20%): Homework does need to be turned in. The main objective is to make every effort to master the concepts before taking each test. The practice tests at the end of each chapter are very similar to the problems on the tests. There will be no surprises in this course; if you can do the homework and chapter tests at the end of each chapter, you should do well on the tests. The answers to all the practice test problems are in the back of the book. Because of this you must show all your work to receive full credit. Calendar: The flexible format of the class allows complete student control of the work schedule within the confines of the deadlines established by the calendar. However, timing is crucial! Every effort should be made to do each assignment completely and in a timely manner in preparation for each test and the final exam. Proctors: Chapter exams and the final exam must be taken in the Learning Resource Center at the college or at a proctored site arranged with the instructor. If you live within 40 miles of Taft College, it is preferred to use the LRC as the proctor site but you must still notify the instructor that you intend to use the LRC. For students beyond the 40 mile distance or not in the TCI Education dept, the proctor name will be submitted by the student and then mutually agreed to by the student and the instructor. Proctors are usually teachers, administrators, counselors, etc. in the area where the student lives. Participation: a student may be dropped from the class if he/she is not making “Continuous Progress” which is defined as taking the tests no later than the last day scheduled on the Calendar. However, if you find that you cannot keep up with the pace of the class it is the student’s responsibility to drop the course in a timely manner. The last day to drop with a “W” is March 30th.
