Course Description
Use of arithmetic functions with emphasis on business applications is the focus of this
course.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, a successful student will have learned and be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of business practices.
2. Solve business related problems utilizing mathematical tools with a heavy
emphasis on the use of algebraic equations.
Required Materials
Text: Graves, Virginia H., Roueche, Nelda W., and Tuttle, Michael D., Business
Mathematics A Collegiate Approach, 9th ed., Prentice Hall. ISBN: 0-13-114014-0
Contact the college book store for rental information.
Grading Policy
The semester letter grade will be based on the following:
Homework
60%
Midterm Exam
20%
Final Exam
20%
THE GRADING SCALE WILL BE:
A=>90%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F=<60%
Homework Assignments and Exams
Homework: Homework will be graded on a credit/no-credit basis. Homework will
consist of problems from questions located at the end of each chapter. To receive credit a
student must complete at least 90% of the assigned problems which include writing out
the original problem as well as showing all steps necessary to solve the problem. If the
problem to be solved is a word problem the first three sentences are to be written out and
any numbers given within the problem are to be labeled (i.e., cost, profit, overhead
etc…). Failure to meet these criteria will result in a score of no credit. Late homework
will be accepted but with a 50% penalty. Home work is due the first day of the week
succeeding the completion of a chapter (e.g. the homework from chapter 1 is due the
Monday beginning week two, 02/04/2008 and so-on). If you receive full credit(did the
homework correctly) there will be a check mark at the top of the paper and no other
feedback. Late homework or home work that originally received no credit but is
reworked to meet the aforementioned criteria will have a check mark followed by a
minus sign signifying one-half credit.
Midterm and Final Exam: The Midterm will cover chapters 1, 2, 3, 12, 13, and 14 of
the textbook. The final will cover chapters 15, 16, 17, and 18 of the textbook. The format
of the exams will consist of multiple-choice, true/false and computational problems. You
will have a maximum of 90 minutes to complete the exams, please make arrangements so
that you will have the necessary time to complete the exam once it has been started.
During the exams, you are allowed to bring with you the textbook, your personal
notes from the class, and a calculator.
Submitting Homework and Exams
There are multiple methods for submitting homework and exams.

Homework Assignments can be submitted through several methods:
1. Through Etudes shell online (preferred method)
• Portal Link
• General Info/How to login
2. Through email - by scanning homework and attaching to email
3. Through regular mail - mailed to my attention at Taft College, 29 Emmons Park
Dr., Taft, CA, 93268. If you choose this option, the postmark must be on or
before the assignment due date to receive full credit. If you choose the option to
mail in your assignment and would like your assignments returned, please include
a self addressed stamped envelope. Assignments will be returned within 7 days of
receipt.
4. By using the LRC located in the Taft College library.
5. Through the TC aides at TCI.
Students are expected to work independently.
Exams can be taken via:
1. The Etudes shell (preferred method)
2. The LRC located in the Taft College Library
3. TCI via proctored aids
4. Proctored exams: See the Proctor Identification Procedures for directions on
how to set up a proctor for approval. Proctors must be approved prior to use and
proctor request forms must be submitted the first week of class if not using the
Taft College proctors.
Attendance Policy
Because this is a distance-learning course, attendance is not an issue. Assignments must
be turned in by the due dates indicated. Homework and exams are expected to be
completed and delivered on time.
Students not submitting the first homework assignment on time will be automatically
dropped from the course. After that, it is the responsibility of the student to drop the
course.
Students should drop the class if they are not making “Continuing Progress” in the
class (Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk for drop dates
and procedures necessary to drop the course). “Continuing Progress” is defined as
turning in work as scheduled. Work on the class every week. Continuous work is
necessary for success.
