Associate in Arts in Art History degree for Transfer (AA-T) DEVELOPMENT CRITERIA NARRATIVE and DOCUMENTATION Criteria A. Appropriateness to Mission 1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives Our department is committed to the belief that an education in the visual arts can be grounded in tradition while geared toward innovation. We foster study and inquiry into the skills and knowledge artist have used through time in the production and evaluation of works of art. It is our goal to assist students in seamlessly transferring to an Art History program at a CSU. Students who complete this program and transfer to a CSU are able to: • Identify the interrelationship of form and content in the artworks and architectural monuments of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. • Develop critical interdisciplinary thinking, both in oral and written form, through comparative analysis and development of visual acuity. • Locate works of art and architecture within diverse historical, political, religious and philosophical contexts. • Discern and appreciate the wide range of ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse art forms, representations, and practices. • Apply art history terminology in the analysis and evaluation of works of art and architecture through written tests, presentations, and oral discussions, the intersection of form, content, and patronage in the formation of visual culture. 2. Catalog Description The Associate in Arts in Art History degree for Transfer (AA-T) prepares the student to transfer to the CSUs as a junior to further their studies of the history of the practice and production of visual arts. The study of art history is the study of objects within their historical, cultural and stylistic context. Background and Rationale Taft College has offered an AA in Art Degree for several decades, but not an Associate in Arts in Art History degree for Transfer (AA-T). The TMC project identifies Art History as one of the disciplines appropriate for a TMC degree. Over the past 2 years as enrollment in the art and art history classes has grown, a number of students have expressed a desire to major in Art History rather than Studio Arts. Since we have the courses, staff, library materials, and facilities to provide these courses, it is reasonable to make application for an Associate in Arts in Art History degree for Transfer (AA-T). Also, this is a natural complement to the AA in Studio Arts Degree because they both require some of the same core courses. Full-time and part-time faculty were involved in the discussion and planning for the program plus the Articulation Officer. Criteria B. Need 5. Enrollment and Completer Projections Taft College estimates enrollment of 20 students with 5 completers. 6. Place of Program in Curriculum/Similar Programs Taft College has created an Associate in Arts in Art History degree for Transfer in response to the requirements of SB 1440 and the transfer needs of students. This program will be housed in the Liberal Arts Division where similar programs and courses are located. Similar programs and courses offered through this division include: Art, Communication, and Humanities. Given the focus of the program, it is ideal that it be located with the Liberal Arts Division to allow for consistency and sharing of the necessary resources and expertise. Additionally, many of the courses required for this program are already offered through the division. Taft College currently does not have an associate degree option in Art History. Therefore, the Associate in Arts in Art History degree for Transfer will provide another option for our students interested in pursuing this field of study. 3 7. Similar Programs at Other Colleges in Service Area. Currently, there are no other Associate in Arts in Art History degrees for Transfer offered in this service area. 8. Adequate Resources 15. Library and/or Learning Resources Plan No extraordinary resources or new procedures are required to support this program. On a yearly basis, the Library acquires new publications, both print and digital, every year with their annual budget. As has been done in the past, recommendations specific to the Art History Degree will be made on an annual basis. 5 16. Facilities and Equipment Plan Taft College currently has the necessary facilities and equipment to support this program. The campus based art history courses are held in one of the newest “smart” classrooms on campus. The room is equipped for Power point and DVD presentations. The building which has housed the former art lab has just been remodeled. In Spring of 2012 the art students will enjoy and utilize a brand new classroom with new desks, easels, etc. The room is equipped with all of the necessary equipment for the instructor to use digital images, DVDs and do demonstrations of skills and materials. There is also a new art gallery adjacent to the rooms where the traditional and digital media art courses are taught, and that space will feature exhibits of student art work plus other art exhibits which will enhance the learning experience of the art history and studio art students and the broader campus community as well as Taft residents. 17. Financial Support Plan The current FTE of art and art history is sufficient to support the salaries of 2 full time faculty. The art faculties have been discussing working with the Foundation staff to raise funds specifically targeted for the Art Department. 18. Faculty Qualifications and Availability Faculty for the art classes must meet Minimum Qualifications. Currently there is a mixture of MFA and MA degree holders teaching all of the art classes. Criteria E. Compliance 19. Based on model curriculum (if applicable) This new degree program has followed the TMC for Art History, and will continue to follow that model for any future curricula development. It is the desire of the program to be consistent with what the UCs and CSUs are expecting in the skills and knowledge of their transfer students. 6 20. Licensing or Accreditation Standards Not applicable 21. Student Selection and Fees At this time students enroll first come, first serve in the art courses offered each semester. They pay the same fee as all community college students. Since this degree requires two studio art courses, there could be a small materials fee for those courses in the future. 7
