Fertilizer, oil, pesticides, detergents, pet waste, grass clippings: You name it and it ends up in our water. “There are many things that we all can do on a daily basis to protect our water resources. One of the most important things you can do to protect our local water resources is don’t allow anything to flow down a storm drain that you wouldn’t swim or fish in. Stopping the pollution at its source reduces that burden on the campuses storm water management program and ensures that our precious local resources are preserved for generations to come.” (2) By sharing the responsibility and making small, easy changes in our daily lives, we can keep common pollutants out of storm water. It all adds up to cleaner water, and it saves the high cost of cleaning up once it’s dirty”. (1) The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is now required to monitor, manage, and document a Storm Water Management Program. Some of the key components of the program are to promote public education, outreach, involvement, and participation. To kick this off a contest will be held to come up with a campus logo for visual awareness. For more detailed information or on how to get involved, please email Dan Sweetman, or call 785-6800. The campus is improving its storm water management practices for existing facilities, new construction and future projects. Improved practices in these areas will result in: Improved drainage system operation Reduce flooding Cleaner water in our rivers, streams, and creeks Enhanced planning, inspection and enforcement efforts related to new development. To be able enjoy our benefits of cleaner water ways, we will need the support of the campus community and the City of La Crosse. While we may not see immediate results from our enhanced stormwater management practices, we must start laying the ground work today, so that we can continue to enjoy our natural resources tomorrow.
