AC Line regeneration products are growing in popularity
due to their ability to save energy, time and money. However,
many customers have little experience with these products.
AC Line Regeneration products represent an opportunity to
reduce expense and improve productivity in many applications.
They have a variety of benefits and potential uses.
What is AC line regeneration?
AC Line regeneration products capture the extra
regenerative energy which would normally be expended
by resistors and puts that energy back on the grid. This
regeneration reduces a company’s total energy usage and
decreases maintenance time. By improving the operating
efficiency of overhead cranes, you may be able to recoup
the cost of the regenerative drive in less than a year.
To address the demand for regenerative technology,
Magnetek introduced IMPULSE®•R and IMPULSE®•D+ HHP.
The IMPULSE ®•R kit includes the regenerative unit, fuses, a
drive coordination reactor, a regenerative current suppression
reactor and a surge protector (MOV). Pre-engineered
enclosed panels are available with kit components already
installed and wired to terminal blocks for easy retrofit. The
IMPULSE ®•D+ HHP panels, which are engineered for use with
high horsepower motors, feature a common bus architecture
capable of line regeneration with multiple drives.

• Regenerative units have the ability to pay for themselves
through energy savings in as little as 12-24 months,
depending on the duty cycle of the crane
• Regenerative units require less maintenance due to
the elimination of dynamic braking resistors and the time
spent on preventive maintenance. Also the elimination of
resistors makes regenerative products, which are located
near the controls, more affordable to install because
they minimize wiring and conduits

Regeneration products are commonly used
for stopping high inertia loads or high duty cycle
loads, running eccentric loads such as punch and
stamping presses, and holding back loads, such
as in downhill conveyors.
IMPULSE®•R
Most appropriate for use with cranes with an HP
rating under 200 HP.
• Chassis drives replace CDBRs and braking resistors
• Can be paired with motors as large as 100 HP at
460VAC (230VAC models are available up to 40 HP)
• Components included in the kit: fuses, two reactors,
and an MOV circuit
IMPULSE®•D+ HHP
Once a crane’s total HP rating exceeds 200 HP it typically
becomes more cost effective to use IMPULSE•D+ HHP
instead of IMPULSE•R.
• Available in 460 and 575 VAC classes
• Current ratings are 400-2,000A for the 460V and
575V models
• Rack mount, common bus architecture
• One common DC bus to supply and regenerate
power for multiple AC drives
What future developments will we see
in regenerative products?
Magnetek currently has other regenerative products in
the research and development stage. Expect to see more
energy efficient, money saving regenerative products
introduced in 2013.

REDUCE COSTS
Magnetek expanded their line of Electrobar offerings
to include Electrobar Elite in 20 AMP. Suitable for many
workstation bridge cranes, the 20 AMP enclosed conductor
bar is 30% lower in cost than the 60 AMP bar.
Elite Bar is also available in 60, 100, 130 and 200 AMP
sizes. The 20 AMP bar retains the values of safety, quick
installation, and low friction common to Elite, but its
galvanized steel conductors reduce the overall cost.
