General Education Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes Friday, October 31, 2014 Room 1200 Centennial Members Present: Georges Cravins (chair), Jennifer Docktor, Mary Krizan, Pamela Morris, James Murray, Julie Weiskopf Members absent: David Hart Meeting called to order at 3:15pm 1. Minutes for the meeting of 10/17/14 approved. M/S/P: 4/0/2 2. J. Docktor reported on recent General Education Committee (GEC) Meeting that took place on Monday, October 27. ○ RFP for assessment software has been extended ○ GEC reported on how many courses submitted general education assessment Form As. Compliance seems good, but the general education assessment committee will cross reference assessment plans with Form A submissions. ○ GEC continues to work on a document to communicate expectations for course SLOs (student learning outcomes). 3. Discussion of automaticallygenerated emailed status reports. Georges will poll instructors on the usefulness of these reports. He will ask instructors whether the following are useful and appropriate: (1) frequency (2) timeliness and whether the reports are uptodate, and (3) content of the report. 4. Discussion of a meeting with Josh Anderson, our contractor computer programmer for the assessment software. ○ Josh Anderson offered to attend one of our committee meetings, either in person or via Skype, to answer any of our questions or address our concerns. ○ We concluded that his recent communication over email effectively answered our questions, and for the moment there is no need to require a meeting with him. 5. Update the website with the most recent Form A expectations document, revised by this committee earlier this semester. P. Morris will work with Patrick Barlow (CATL) to get the most recent version of the document on the website. P. Morris offered to be a contact person for any website related issues or requests. 6. Discussion of Form A’s where consensus has not been reached. ○ UWL 100 after some discussion, a consensus was still not reached. All committee members will vote over the online submission software. ○ MUS 317 reached a consensus that only a revision to the course SLO is necessary to satisfy concerns raised in the review process. ○ Modern languages common task (submitted under SPA 102) A consensus was not reached. We all identified a common concern that the same expectations for performance categories in rubric are used for multiple levels of the foreign language courses from 100 level through 300 level. Given students’ language proficiency and instructors’ expectations for their students should both grow with the course level, it does not seem appropriate that the courselevel rubrics should have the same expectations. A consensus was not reached on whether to approve the task or request revisions. Committee members should vote over the submission software website. ○ PHY 125 We recommend a revision to the course SLO ○ MTH 151 No consensus was reached, but a vote over the submission software website already shows a majority in favor. ○ THA 110 A consensus was not reached. There is a reservation concerning the rubric, and whether the second common paragraph in the description of every performance category is consistent with the evidence and expectations described in the first paragraph of the rubric. A consensus was not reached on whether to approve the task or request revisions. Committee members should vote over the submission software website. 7. Form B discussion ○ P. Morris will collect data on Form B submissions that were due this past summer, including data on the proportion of courses that have drafted, submitted, and have not yet submitted these forms. ○ G. Cravins welcomed discussion on the appropriate response to Form B submissions, including identifying our purpose for wanting to review them, and what type of review should take place. 8. Completing the first round of our Form A review process The committee asks all members to complete their evaluation of all form A submissions by Friday, November 7 at 5:00pm. Meeting adjourned at 4:45pm Submitted by James Murray
