Kimberly A. Vogt _ Dean Benson __________________________ Re: The Center for Grief & Death Education In accordance with Faculty Senate’s 41813 Policy on Academic Centers, Institutes and Laboratories (shown in italics on the second page below), we are requesting approval of the following: 1. A change in the academic home of the Center from Sociology/Archeology to Psychology 2. A change in the name of the center from the Center for Death Education and Bioethics to the Center for Grief & Death Education Justification: The Center has been housed in Sociology/Archeology since its inception and has been headed by several excellent scholars with expertise in the field. The last director, Mike Brennan, left UWL approximately 2 years ago. The department has since hired several sociologists; however, none have an expertise in death and dying. In Fall 2013, Psychology hired Dr. Erica Srinivasan a developmental gerontologist with a significant teaching and scholarly interest in death & dying. Consequently, the departments of Sociology/Archeology and Psychology, in collaboration with the Dean’s Office of the College of Liberal Studies, are requesting this change. The Center has no designated budget (136 288835). The Center occassionally has an operating budget based on its role sponsoring the International Death, Grief and Bereavement Conference (held annually in La Crosse in conjunction with continuing education) http://www.uwlax.edu/conted/dgb/. The move has physical resource implications. Currently, there are is a suite of smaller offices on 3rd floor main that are being earmarked for Psychology research space after May 2014. We will be able to house resources in one of these rooms in conjunction with Drs. Srinivasan and Rozek’s research space needs. The office associated with Sociology that houses the Center’s materials is currently being used for 3 IAS faculty and will continue to be used for sociology staffing needs. Effective Date: July 1, 2014 Centers, Institutes and Laboratories are academic units that create andíor disseminate information out do not offer coursework for academic credit. Their purpose is to provide focus and organizational structure for study and scholarship within a defined area of interest. These units may contribute to curriculum and degree programs housed within academic departments but do not serve as the home for academic programs or coursework. Faculty associated with such units must be members of academic departments through which they acquire tenure and promotion. Institutes and Centers are similar, although Centers more frequently represent multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary activities. Laboratories are generally smaller and focused on specific research programs within a discipline. With the concurrence of the Chancellor, the Faculty Senate may approve proposals for such units. A proposal should describe the activities of the unit, the orgenìzetionai structure and oversight, resources to be devoïed to the unit and letters of support from academic departments as appropriate.
