Physics 481 Problem Set 1 Spring 2007 1. Problem 5.1, page 202 in Griffith – Center of mass motion and relative motion for two particle system. 2. Suppose we have two noninteracting particles, both of mass m in the one-dimensional infinite square well potential. Taking into account the spin states as well as the spatial wave function, write down the ground state and the first excited state for the case when the two particles are identical spin 1/2 particles and for the case when they are identical spin-0 particles. Give the energy of the ground state and the first excited state and note any degeneracy in the states. 3. Problem 5.4, page 206 in Griffith – Normalization of two-particle states. 4. Problem 5.6, page 210 in Griffith – Average squared distance between two particles (distinguishable, identical bosons, identical fermions) in infinite potential well. 5. Problem 5.33, page 246 in Griffith - Three particle states. Due Friday, January 19, 5 pm. Scores for late problem sets will be divided by 2. 1
