Organization of Campus Women-another year bygone.
A message !om 2013-14 president Teri Talpe
Jean L. Foss & Norene A. Smith
Established in 1985, this is our annual
scholarship that we award to assist
non-traditional women students. See
page 3 for this year’s winners!
Spring Symposium
This issue of the OCW
newsletter arrives post-graduation.
The dumpster diving season is ripe,
parking near campus has become a
fair shake and one can (should?)
stop to smell the lilacs! It is also
that time to reflect back on
another flourishing year at UW-L
and our own contributions to that
success. These are testimony that
our organization is alive and well.
We have a head start on our
activities for the next academic
year and there is buzz and stir
humming in the background for a
film screening of Girl Rising---a new
documentary promoting education
for all girls worldwide. Education
and equal opportunity for girls and
women reflect our organization’s
mission. This will be a tremendous
opportunity for the OCW to
initiate collaboration with other
departments to host this event,
scheduled for October (details to
come), with the hope of bringing it
to the larger community. In the
meantime, our organization is
made up of admirable women who
give their time, energy, and ideas
for the greater good. It has been an
immense pleasure to preside and
represent the OCW. Thank you,
everyone, for your goodness, your
generosity and patience! Now, let’s
go and smell those lilacs!
Seeking Meaning- Finding
Purpose
This spring we listened to Marci
Madary, who spoke about the
importance of poetry in finding purpose
in life. See page 2 for photos!

Carpe Diem for now please,
especially after a long winter, but
here’s a sneak preview--
Steppin’ Out in Pink
Breast Cancer Awareness
Pink t-shirts snaking through the town
(see map) on a Saturday in September,
especially when it’s a late sunny summer
day! This year the date is Sept 7. We
support breast cancer research!
Membership Drive
Coffee Clutch
Our annual membership drive will be on
Friday, October 4, after the fluster of
September and the beginning of the fall
semester. This is a chance to visit, pay
dues and bring guests who are
interested in OCW.
YWCA Tribute
Eliminating Racism, Empowering
Women
Seeking MeaningFinding Purpose
Marci Madary, (UW-L 1991), our
guest speaker, wove poetry
throughout her talk on how we
find purpose in our lives. A
delicious and varied buffet of
cold refreshments was on hand.
We then laughed, we reflected, we
all had private “ah-ha” moments
as we listened to her choice of
poems and wisdom. For a
complete list of titles and poets,
send an email to us:
ocw@uwlax.edu
A special thanks to the organizing
committee: Sharie Brunk & Maureen
Wilson for the tasty buffet, Maggie
McHugh for helping with
communication logistics, Deb Hoeth for
the door prizes and Michelle Stertz for
the poster.

Why was I born?
What is my life about?
The YWCA Tribute Committee organizers
for this year are Deb Hoeth, Kjerstin
Lang, and Jaralee Richter. They will be
leading the charge this summer to collect
and select nominations for this annual
regional award. It is always an honor to
learn about and work with the wonderful
movers and shakers we have on
campus--the women who are eliminating
racism and empowering women. The
banquet will take place mid November,
2013. Send names to any of the
committee organizers.
OCW Brochure
Thanks to Michelle Stertz for designing
our new OCW brochure, free to
download, print and distribute!
Do I make a difference?
Discovering what our meaning is in life is critical to our personal happiness. Join
us as we use research, experience, and poetry, to explore what gives our lives
purpose. Guest speaker, Marci Madary, UW-L alumna and adjunct professor
at Viterbo University, is trained in Energy Therapy, the Enneagram, and
Spiritual Direction. She will also share her passion for poetry.
