Organization for Campus Spring Newsletter omen March 2014 "As you navigate through the rest of your life, be open to collaboration. Other people and other people's ideas are often better than your own. Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life." -Amy Poehler Collaboration(Karmin Van Domelen) When I thought back about the events, projects and programs that the Organization for Campus Women (OCW) hosted or participated in over the last several months the word collaboration came to mind. Although there is more than one way to define it, I felt Amy Poehler captured it in a way that best fit my thoughts on the engagement OCW has with campus and the community. I truly believe as we make our way through life it’s helpful to know what we’re good at as individuals, but it’s essential to recognize the talents of others. I find I’m inspired by the creativity, comrade and on-going achieve- ments of this organization. Whether it’s providing home cooked meals for the Self Sufficiency program, coordinating food and clothing drives, Fund Raising for the Jean L.Foss and Norene Smith Scholarship Fund, cohosting events or developing symposiums, OCW is at its finest when collaboration is in full swing. Of course all organizations thrive when lead by enthusiastic members and OCW has grown in several ways due to the fantastic and tireless leadership of Teri Talpe, our current President. As President Elect, I must say she will be a hard act to follow. I’m very proud of this organization, the progress we’ve made and the difference we make in the lives of others and I’m looking forward to continuing this good work. Please keep in mind you can join Organization for Campus Women at any time throughout the year. The membership form is available on line on the OCW website. Membership dues are $10 per year which is used for program support, printing, and refreshments. All members of campus and the community are welcome to join. Karmin Van Domelen President Elect Mark you calendar for these upcoming events Book Club: Friday, April 4th - Murphy’s Mug Meeting: Thursday, April 10th - 2200 Centennial Hall Symposium: Wednesday, April 23rd - Hall of Nations Meeting: Thursday, May 8th - 2200 Centennial Hall Recent Events (Fall 2013) Cookie-Off (November 21, 2013) Seven teams competed in the third annual OCW Cookie-Off for the right to claim the coveted Golden Spatula. It was a close call, but only one cookie could come out on top. The “Billionaire Bar” won highest honors. Kate Oganowski, team leader, was proud to be the voters’ choice for Best Tasting. This year, two new awards were at stake for competing teams – Best Looking and Best Tablescape. Coincidently, Human Resource’s BurgerDoodle swept the field to take both of these honors. Thank you to all the participating teams as well as those who showed support by voting for your favorite cookies. We raised $510! This money will support the scholarships OCW awards to UW-L students each spring. Participating recipes can be found on the OCW website. Holiday Social (December 12, 2013) The OCW Annual Holiday Social was held on Thursday, December 12th. As in years past, the children from the Campus Child Center provided lively vocal entertainment for the group. Chancellor Gow even joined the children for a rendition of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. An assortment of door prizes were awarded to several in attendance. Many thanks to Karmin Van Domelen for organizing this event. Upcoming Events (Spring2014) Annual OCW Symposium Scholarships (April 23, 2014) For our 2014 Spring Symposium, one of our own history faculty members, Dr. Ariel Beaujot, will speak to us. 10 Objects that Changed the World (and One that Changed Wisconsin) is the title of her talk. “Part of the way we demonstrate who we are to one another is through what we buy; what we wear, our choices in food, even what coffee shops we frequent, can provides clues as to our values and our personalities. But have you ever thought about how our daily consumption of food, clothing, and shelter is part of a long commodity chain that links us to world history?” In her talk Beaujot will address how the things that are in the background of our daily lives have been involved in wars, revolutions, women’s emancipation, and even slavery. Dr. Beaujot, Assistant Professor in the Department of History at UWL and author of Victorian Fashion Accessories, is a materials culture specialist. Students in her section of History 102 learn about world commodities that they consume everyday, their history and how their consumption continues to create history. Her teaching is creative and innovative, and her students contribute podcasts to a website that she has created with them.
