Using Power Law Approximations
to Model Cancer
(with discussion of math graduate school)
Catherine Patterson*
Graduate Student, Mathematics Department
University of Iowa
Cancer is a lot like a hurricane; you can see it coming, but you don’t know exactly
where it will go or how much damage it will do. However, by combining mathematical
equations with patient data, we can predict how a patient’s cancer will develop. This
presentation will introduce mathematical cancer models and will focus on multiple
myeloma’s impact on the bone.
* Catie is a mathematics graduate student at U of Iowa. She will begin her talk with discussion on graduate
school including advice for students. Students and faculty are welcome to have dinner with the speaker after.
