! Alabama A&M University Department of Physics Receives Two First Prizes at ERN Conference! ! Two students from the Alabama A&M University (AAMU) Department of Physics win first prizes in their categories at the Emerging Researchers National Conference (ERN)[1] in Washington D.C. (February 25th through the 27th):! • Ashley Owens: “The Muon G-2 Experiment” (Oral Presentation, Physics)! • Khyana Price: “Pulsations of neutron Stars” (Poster Presentation, Physics)! Both students are supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program “Alliance for Physics EXcellence" (APEX)[2], headed by the the AAMU Department of Physics.! Besides our winners, we had five more undergraduate students present their posters, and one additional undergraduate and graduate student each present oral presentations. These student’s research was supported by AAMU’s “Advancing Success in STEM Undergraduate Research and Education” (ASSURE) NSF HBCU-UP grant, overseen by Dr. Marius Schamschula, who accompanied the students to the conference and judged Nanoscience/ Physics poster presentations. The quality of the majority of student’s abstracts was so high that they received ERN travel awards to attend the conference. Additional non-presenter students attended with travel grants from The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP)[3].! ! [1] http://www.emerging-researchers.org! [2] http://www.alapex.org!
