The Houston Alumni Chapter shall provide a medium through which the alumni may work to advance the growth and development of Alabama
A&M University (AAMU). It assists AAMU in the recruitment of students, promotes the development of public/private support for the
university, engage in activities that enhance the university’s reputation and fosters the progression of alumnus.

Scholarship Guidelines
The Houston Alumni Chapter Scholarship is based primarily on scholarship merit, financial need
and evidence of leadership. The Scholarship is granted for one academic year in the amount of
$1,000 and is allocated equally for Fall and Spring Semesters. All required application materials,
including copies of admission's acceptance letter, official school transcript, counselor report,
letter of recommendation, and essay must be submitted by April 30, 2013 to:

Award Criteria








Must be a United States citizen from the Houston metropolitan area
Must be a graduating high school senior OR a current AAMU undergraduate student who is
in good standing with the University
Must provide evidence of current enrollment at A&M University as a full-time student
Graduating high school seniors must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00
and attained a score in the 50 percentile on the college entrance examination (ACT or SAT)
Current AAMU students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.85 and completed 30 semester hrs
Must demonstrate leadership qualities and involvement in school/community organizations
Must provide high school principal or counselor report form and at least one letter of recommendation
from community leader (e.g. pastor, teacher, etc.); current AAMU students must provide a
recommendation letter from advisor or dean
Must complete essay requirements
Essay Criteria
Prepare a minimal 500 word essay that describes yourself, your goals and address the following
questions:

Is there a need and role for Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the 21st Century?

Why did you decide to attend Alabama A&M University?

Who Has Been Most Influential in Your Life and Why?

How you plan to improve your community?

COMPLETE the scholarship application (enclosed)
Submit a typed minimal 500 word essay that address the essay criteria
REQUEST an official copy of your latest high school or college transcript to be sent to
AAMU Houston Alumni Chapter at the above P. O. Box address
SUBMIT scholarship application, essay and official copy of your transcript
Ensure that the above data is submitted by April 30, 2013
Enclose a recent color photo of yourself (4X6 or less)
