Riley discussed MTH 126, a new course being proposed for inclusion in the General Education
curriculum. Documents describing MTH 125 and MTH 126, which comprise a two-semester
sequence intended for elementary education students, were distributed to committee members.
Also distributed was a document showing Department of Public Instruction (DPI) content
standards and the courses (current and proposed) that address and satisfy these standards. A
discussion centering on the appropriateness of MTH 126 as a General Education course was
undertaken in light of Becky LeDocq’s e-mail from Emily Johnson. Riley answered several
questions, and received input from Committee members regarding MTH 126.
Riley discussed the proposed new minor offering: Mathematics Minor with Education Emphasis.
He outlined reasons for proposing the new minor and noted that Department of Public Instruction
certification of this minor will be sought. Questions of Committee members were answered, and
input was given to Riley.
Riley discussed the proposed new major offering: Mathematics Major with Applied Emphasis. He
outlined reasons for proposing the new major. Questions of Committee members were answered,
and input was given to Riley.
Bonnie Bratina and Anne Galbraith appeared before the committee to discuss a proposed new
SAH course, “Changing the Culture: Women in Science.” One issue receiving attention was
the reasoning behind proposing this course as a SAH course, rather than as a Women’s
Studies course. The idea of cross-listing the course with Women’s Studies was discussed.
Specific and general input and suggestions regarding the course were provided by Committee
members.
The next meeting of the committee will be in one week, at the usual time and in the usual
place.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 4:25 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Rob McGaff
