Wisconsin-Stevens Point is offering two institutes
related to Waldorf curriculum. University credit
available for additional fee.*
What is the Waldorf Approach to
Education?
The Waldorf approach to education aspires to:
•Awaken imagination and wonder
•Enliven and expand the breadth of student
learning, bringing joy into the classroom
•Address the developmental needs of all children,
through integrated, art-filled learning
•Use creativity in the classroom while
nurturing emotional intelligences, kindness
and responsibility through character building
activities

an experiential and integrated approach
•Strengthen literacy and numeracy with
innovative and practical pedagogical methods
•Protect childhood by creating a healthy
and nurturing environment and using
developmentally appropriate teaching methods

painting, poetry, drama, storytelling, singing and

This course will provide an overview of the
traditional theory of child development and
will outline Rudolf Steiner’s (creator of Waldorf
education) views of child development. The course
will also cover the biographies of educational
philosophers whose work informed our current
understandings of the development of the child
and will further students’ understanding of brain
research and child development.
Weaving the Arts into Elementary
Science Teaching: A Developmental
Approach
Dates: Aug. 1-5, 2016; 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Location: Central Wisconsin Environmental Station
in Amherst Junction, Wis., host of the preK-6
Tomorrow River Community Charter School
Institute: $600
Discount rate if taking the credit course: $300
Includes lunch and supplies
Students will experience a hands-on, inquiry-based
course format with direct application to teaching
science. Focus will be placed on a deep connection
to the natural world as well as a reverence and
respect for nature, one another, and the planet.
Students will be introduced to the Waldorf Science
Curriculum. Methodology from Waldorf education
will be applied to the National Science Education
Standards (NSESs) recommended science
curriculum. Students will experience guided
crayon drawing, colored pencil drawing, water
color painting, and handwork and see how these
artistic mediums can integrate into the science
curriculum.
Instructor
Mary Barr Goral, Ph.D., began
her career in education over 30
years ago. After teaching in the
public schools in Bloomington,
Indiana, for 11 years, she received
both her master’s and doctorate
in curriculum studies and
math education from Indiana
University.
Mary taught in higher education for 12 years and
she currently works with Public Waldorf schools,
coaching and training their teachers through
her educational organization, Transformational
Teaching.
Mary pioneered two other Waldorf teacher
trainings, Great Lakes Waldorf Teacher Training in
Milwaukee (started in 2002) and Kentahten Teacher
Training, a regional teacher training in Louisville
(started in 2005).
Her book, Transformational Teaching: Waldorfinspired Methods in the Public School, tells the story
of teachers in Louisville who use Waldorf-inspired
methods with their public school students.
Mary has served on the board of trustees of Rudolf
Steiner College and is currently on the advisory
board of the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education.
