Overview:
TheMasterofScienceinMicrobiologyprogramallowsstudentsadvancedstudyinmulIpleareasofmicrobiology.Students
havetheopIonofageneralM.S.degreeoranM.S.degreeinmicrobiologywithaconcentraIoninclinicalmicrobiology.
Admissiontotheprogramisbased,inpart,onundergraduatecoursework,undergraduategradepointaverage(GPA),
scoresontheGREgeneralexam,leTersofrecommendaIon,andapersonalleTer.Eachstudentwillchooseamajoradvisor
andanadvisorycommiTeeduringthefirstsemesterofresidence.ThiscommiTeewillassistthestudentindrafingthe
student’splanofstudy,whichwilldictatethestudent’scurriculumfortheensuingsemesters.
Allstudentscompleteacapstoneexperience.StudentsobtainingtheM.S.inmicrobiologycompleteathesiswhilestudents
intheclinicalmicrobiologyconcentraIonorM.S.inbiologywithaclinicalmicrobiologyconcentraIoncompleteathesisor
seminarpaper.
Microbiology-MS
Overview:
TheMicrobiologyMSProgramisatradiIonalMaster'sprograminwhichstudentsfocusoncourseworkandproducing
originalresearchwithafacultymentor.Forcoursework,students,inconsultaIonwithafacultycommiTee,chooseclasses
fromalistof28courses.Fortheoriginalresearch,studentsworkwithafacultymentorinanyaspectofmicrobiology,
includingenvironmentalmicrobiology,microbialecology,foodandindustrial,bacterialphysiology,geneIcs,immunology,
infecIousdiseasemicrobiologyandmore.
Programrequirements:
Admission:
1. AdmissiontothemicrobiologyconcentraIonrequiresaminimumcourseofoneintroductorymicrobiologycourse
(MIC230FundamentalsofMicrobiologyorequivalent).Studentslackinganintroductorymicrobiologycoursemaybe
condiIonallyadmiTedtotheconcentraIonconIngentonremediaIonofthisprerequisite.Remediatedprerequisite
coursesdonotcounttowardtheM.S.degree.AddiIonalcoursesinmicrobiologyandastrongchemistrybackground,
includingbiochemistry,arehighlyrecommended.
2. Anoverallundergraduategradepointaverageofatleast2.85ona4.00scale,anaverageofatleast3.00inthelast
halfofallundergraduatework,oranaverageofatleast3.00fornolessthan12semestercreditsofgraduatestudyat

ThisconcentraIonisofferedbytheDepartmentofBiology,theDepartmentofMicrobiology,GundersenLutheranMedical
Center,MarshfieldLaboratories/St.Joseph’sHospital/MarshfieldClinic,andtheWisconsinStateLaboratoryofHygiene.This
programinvolveson-campuscourseworkandclinicalrotaIonsatGundersen-LutheranMedicalCenter,Marshfield
Laboratories/St.Joseph’sHospital/MarshfieldClinic,andtheWisconsinStateLaboratoryofHygiene.Studentswho
completetheclinicalmicrobiologyconcentraIonareeligibletosecureSpecialistMicrobiologist(SM-AAM)cerIficaIonof
theAmericanAcademyofMicrobiology.ThecombinaIonofclassroomeducaIon,clinicalrotaIons,andresearch
experiencewillpreparestudentsforavarietyofemploymentopportuniIesincluding:
