Privacy concern not overwhelming at Iowa
State Foundation
AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University Foundation says only 103 donors
out of more than 49-thousand requested anonymity last year.
A February 2005 ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court said the Foundation is
governed by open records law because it performs a government function for a
state institution.
A new Foundation policy allows donors to keep their name confidential, but they
still reveal the monetary range of their gift and how it is supposed to be spent.
But advocates for open records say the public still needs a better way to see
whether gifts are being spent in the way the donor specified.
Part of the dispute involves land given to Iowa State that was supposed to used
as a farm, but the university sold the property and used the money for campus
improvements.
