ARTS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
ARTM 485 Arts Management Externship in London Eleonora Redaelli CAC 309 715‐345‐6356 eredaell@uwsp.edu Instructor: Office: Telephone: E‐mail: COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:  Communicate effectively with their supervisors, co‐workers and the externship organization’s customers and patrons.  Perform business or communication tasks in an arts setting.  Describe the history of their arts organization in the community.  Identify the skills and information that they need to improve to succeed in their chosen profession. FINAL PORTFOLIO To reflect on your experience you will prepare a portfolio either in a three‐ring binder or in an e‐portfolio using D2L. The portfolio collects the following documents: 1. Journal You will need to keep a weekly journal reporting what you are learning. The journal will examine two types of learning: tasks and interpersonal skills. What kind of insights did you acquire about the tasks associated with your job? What types of observations did you gather about your communication with colleagues, clients and others in the workplace? No specific length is required. 2. Reflection paper You will need to submit a reflection paper on what you learned through your externship experience. Two weeks before the end of the externship start reflecting on your overall experience. The paper must be 4‐5 pages, double‐spaced, 12‐point type, and one‐inch margins. The paper should not be about what you did, but rather what you learned. The following are some of the topics that you explored in your paper:  What surprised you about your externship organization?  What new information, skills, or approaches did you learn from your experience?  How well did you get along with your on‐site supervisor and the other organizational employees, and how might you improve these types of work relationships in the future?  What were the most positive and negative aspects of your externship?  How did the experience affect your future career plans? 3. Work samples While in the process of your externship, you should be collecting two or three work. These work samples might include press releases, brochures, posters, public service announcements, schedules, newsletters, databases, etc. ARTM 485 syllabus-spring2013

4. Pictures Within your portfolio you will need to turn in two pictures. One will show you with your coworkers and the other one will show you in your work location. GRADING Besides your portfolio, I will also consider the feedback from your on‐site supervisor. This assessment will be a significant factor when your grade is determined. Anglo American Educational Services, our program coordinator in London, will be getting this evaluation to me. The student’s experience will be graded as follow:  A: all the materials have been submitted, they are all of professional quality and the on‐
site supervisor evaluation is excellent  B: all the materials have been submitted, but some of them are not professional or the on‐site supervisor evaluation is mediocre  C: some materials are missing and the on‐site supervisor evaluation is not enthusiastic  D: some materials are missing and the communication with the on‐site and/or academic advisor was poor  F: the portfolio was not turned in meeting the deadline (the last week of the semester) DEADLINE Friday, May 10th ARTM 485 syllabus-spring2013
