Here are a few more highlights from things that happened over the summer months: Madison School District and Madison Cares were awarded a four year, four million dollar mental health expansion and sustainability grant from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration). We are very excited about this and feel fortunate to continue helping and supporting individuals who struggle with emotional, social or behavioral issues. Madison Cares and the Standard Journal received a Gold and Silver honor from a national awards ceremony called the ECCOs (Excellence in Community Communications and Outreach). This award was for work done on a newspaper series focusing on mental health that ran on the front page, of the paper for nine consecutive weeks. If you missed it, these articles are all linked in the award announcement on msd321.com. The MC staff completed an eight week summer camp for children grades K-6 in our district with behavioral and/or social emotional needs. We averaged 35 kids each activity and had a great time working closely and developing new skills with these children and youth. Do you know how to respond to a mental health crisis? Through our Youth Mental Health First Aid grant, we were able to train ALL of our custodial staff, bus drivers and many more district staff and community members over the summer. This class is FREE and open to anyone who interacts with or has youth of their own. You can read more about it, get upcoming dates or sign up at ymhfa.msd321.com. Over the summer, we put together a tri-fold brochure featuring Madison Cares and our services. We are hoping this serves as a resource to parents, teachers and community professionals. You can find these brochures at the front desk of each of our schools or you can download a copy from madisoncares.msd321.com. -1- 2015-2016 C.A.T. The Parents as Teachers program is a National Home Visiting program that informs parents of developmental norms. Our Parent Educators provide support for parents as they link with their community, and help families to find the resources they may need. As a Lead Family Contact I provide families, with children of all ages, a contact person that will support them as they navigate through the services their family needs I moved to Rexburg, from Michigan, seven years ago. I lived in the same small town in Michigan all of my life, the town where my dad and his dad were born. Through a grant, I formed a Parents as Teachers program, from the ground up, that served the families in my small Michigan town. I have a passion for children and their families. I believe the far majority of families want the very best life for their children, but sometimes they are not sure how to achieve the results they hope for. I believe education, and positive feedback, to families, is a wonderful way to help families become all they can be. Since moving to Rexburg I have married a wonderful man, Sgt. Brian Allen, blending our families, we have 10 children and 10 grandchildren with 3 on the way. I love to garden, both vegetables and flowers, and swim in the summer, Cross country ski in the winter, and hike in the spring and fall. I really just love to be outside although I am not opposed to crocheting or cuddling up with a good book. Read more about Deb and the rest of the MC staff at madisoncares.msd321.com -2-
