production of plywood.
The log supply 'enerally was better this year. llore haxdwoods were offered for sale by government agencies, especially the State Porestry
Department. The prices paid by mills increased considerably as well.
Red alder is by far the most popular of the Oregon hardwoods and may constitute over
91. of the volume processed. it is well liked by the furniture trade and future demarid is expected to increase.
This wood works easily, sands well, has good nail and
screw holding ability, has good color, paints and stains well and can be made to iooh

lack cottonwood or balm, as it is called locally, achieves the largest size of our
local hardwoods andy because of its rapid row-bh and ease of peeling, is becoming in
creasingly popular for veneer core stock. It is also used for pulp, soft tissue
paper and excelsior.
Oregon ash in this area is ideally suited. for the production of furniture parts,
baseball bats, water skis and oars. The heavy demand for oars and the short supply
of close grain Oregon ash has forced the price up over fifty dollars a pair.
Locally grown bigleaf maple has long been used for the manufacture of the famous
uFlintridgel maple furniture at Ê.lbany and lower grades of this species find a ready
market for IDallet construction. A new line soon to hit the market is a board and
batten dado panel also made from low grade material. The panel will be sold either

Oregon white ok is presently being used for pallet constraction and occaionally
for railroad ties. The recent decision to improve the fation's rail system should
create a heavy denand for ties in the near future.

Tree species such as red alder and. bigleaf maple are usually bucked into eight, ten
or twelve-foot lengths or multiple of these lengths. Ten-inch minimum top diameters
are usually preferred. jest utilization demands that the logs be processed as quickly as possible after felling and bucking to prevent end checking and sap stain. Red
alder will color soon after cutting if cold decked; this characteristic is the reasoi.

A.ccordng to ilgures released by the Red Cedar Shingle and handsplit
iake Bureau,
roduction of cedar shingles and shakes declined 1L
in 19Th. The lower rate of contruction of ner housing would account for much of this reduction.
Shingle output
has fallen each year since 1972 but this is the first time since
1970 that shake production has dropped from the previous year. Production of shakes
declined 6.8
in
:9714.
Actual figures were 3.OL million squares in 1973 to 2.8L. million
last year.
.
T
)istribution figures compiled by the ikireau covorirg 83', of the production
showed
little chaie in
ional use of shingles and shakes. Texas, the leading shingle
consuming state, used 35.6 of those produced in 197Lj..
California used
of the
197L1. production and ranked second, followed by
Washington, IJissouri and Oklahoma.
California continued to lead all states in the consumption of shakes with
of
the total production, followed by Washington, Oregon and Colorado.
The volume of
:hakes used in Oreon increased this year.
