This Utilization Report and Directory of the Wood-Using Industries
has been prepared upon the request of the Woodland Committee of
the Upper Willamette Resource Conservation and Development Project.
The RC&D Project is an overall program for accelerating the resource
development of the Project Area.
Since the 1969 edition of this report was published, the industry
has experiiced a nuniberofchanges; some companies have terminated
their operations while some new ones have emerged.
The scope of
the Upper Willamette RC&D Project area has also changed. In 1966,
the boundaries were fixed geographically and included only the area
between the Cascade and Coast Ranges. Now, politicalboundaries
are used and include all of Benton, Lane, Lincoln and Linn counties.
This Directory is a revision of those published in 1966 and 1969.
Its purpose is to provide a condensed compilation of the industries
It covers all
and help towards better utilization and marketing.
primary and secondary manufacturing i4thin the RC&D Project Area.
The Directory also lists the facilities,
primary products and amount of production by various size classes of each company.

ThENDS OF TRE WOO-USING INDUSThX
Forest products industries,
as a whole, had an excellent year in 1972.
"housing construction set new records again in May, with actual private starts
totaling 223,800 units, compared with April's record-breaking 210,500.
The
increase over April was in single family residences and centered around a
24% jump in starts in the North Central states."jJ On the local level, most
companies reported increased production as compared to other years. Several
companies made improvements.
"Waterborne shipments of lumber from the Pacific coast of North America
increased 10% duringthefirst quarter of 1972 compared with a like period of
Almost 989 million board feet were shipped despite a month-long ship1971.
ping tie-up at United States west coast ports. Canadian shipments to U. S.
ports rose 24% over 1971 levels to 389.3 million board feet while exports
were down slightly; the reverse was true in the U. S. as exports rose 21% to
186.2 million feet while domestic cargoes were marginally lower."/
"Oregon continues to lead other states and regions as the largest producer of plywood.
Last year some 8.1 billion square feet were produced in
Oregon, with this figure representing 48.8% of the total output. However,
1971 marked the first year that Oregon's share of the market dropped below
50%;
in 1967 Oregon produced 57.4% of all the plywood manufactured.lt/
The
reduction is attributed to increased production in the South. According to
figures compiled by the American Plywood Association, the South last year
produced some 4.4 billion square feet, or 26.6%ofthe 16.6 billion feet manufactured inthis country. Production in the southern Yellow Pine region has
soared 147.8% in the last four years. In 1967, the South accounted for only
13.7%ofthe total U. S. outputofl2.9 billion square feet. Since that time,
some 50-odd mills have come online in the southern region."L/
"The export chip market, although soft, is expectedtoimprove.
Japan's
need for pulp and paper is estimated at 16.9 million tons by the year 1975
and 23k- million tons by 1980."/ "Western North America is clearly the premium potential soarceofhigh quality wood chipsorof market pulp for Japan's
long-tenn needs."/
Logging slash offers a potential source for chippable
material.
The U. S. Forest Service estimates 100 tons of slash per acre is
left on the groimd after logging in the Douglas fir region.
Two salvage log
plants are already constructed in Lane County to process chips, but productionisnot expected from either plant until the surplus of chips is absorbed
into the market.
New techniquesareneeded to handle salvageable slash. Perhaps specialized crews using equipment designed to handle slash after the logging has
terminated is the Answer.
It is known already that regular logging crews,
using conventional equipment,
cannot do the job economically under present
cost allowances in timber appraisals.

Unfortunately, the supply of Oregon ash of merchantable size
is somewhat limited.
Locally grown bigleaf maple has long been used for the manufacture of
the famous ttFlintridge" maple furniture at Albany and lower grades of this
species find a ready market for pallet construction.
Oregon white oak is presently being cut by two or more hardwood mills
in the RC&D Project area for pallet construction and occasionally for railroad ties.

HARVESTING & PRODUCTS
Tree species suchasred alder and bigleaf maple are usually bucked into
eight, ten, or twelve-foot log lengths or multiples of these lengths.
Teninch minimum top diameters are usually preferred.
Best utilization demands
that the logs be processed as quickly as possible after felling and bucking
to prevent end checking and sapstain.
Red alder will color soon after cutting if cold decked; this characteristic is the reason for itsname--red alder.

Small roundwood products are harvested during early thinning of young
Unmanaged trees usually grow so close together that the stand is

stagnated and the smaller trees are crowded out by the more vigorous dominant
trees which overtop them.
companies use posts and poles from commercial and precommercial thinnings. Theposts and poles are being used on farms and ranches for farm buildings, vacation log cabins, pole corrals, fence posts, fencing along county roads and highways, and building rustic fences around country
homes.

LONG LASTING
WOOD IS STRONGER
According to tests conducted in Colorado, "a force of 300 pounds
applied 4 inches above the ground line will cause the strongest
commercial steel post to fail, while at least 400 pounds was required to cause failure of a small t
and a half inch wood post."
WOOD HAS STABILITY
Wooden posts stayin the soil better than steel because more surface area is in contact with the soil.
WOOD IS EASY TO INSTALL
With the improvement of power-driven post drivers, large assignments are frequently accomplished by machines. One tractor driver
and one machine operator can install about a half a mile of treated wooden posts per day.
WOOD REQUIRES LITTLE MAINTAINANCE
Properly treated wood posts give years of maintenance-free service.
The service life can be greatly extended by treatoent with
a wood preservative.
WOOD ENHANCES THE LANDSCAPE
Wooden fences compliment the home.
Their attractiveness can be
found in an infinite variety of styles made possible from a wide
selection of split and roundwood forest products.
WOOD UTILIZATION AIDS THE ECONOMY
Timber is a major industry in this area and small roundwood products are a natural use for thinnings from our 1)uglas-fir stands.
Intensive forest management will go a long way towards solving
some of our timber shortages that are predicted.
