Catalog Description: This First Year Seminar explores the phenomenon of The Beatles in Great Britain and the “British Invasion” which transformed U.S. social and cultural norms for young people. The story of how four lads from Liverpool, England ushered in a (link to Catalog) revolution in music, popular culture, social and religious values, business practice and changed history is the topic of this Freshman Year Seminar. The class will explore “Beatlemania” through a variety of materials from the history, art, film, poetry, eastern religious studies, business practices and political engagement, and, of course, music, in order to fully understand how the Beatles were more than the greatest rock band ever, but one which truly “changed the world.” Existing GDR? Course Learning Outcomes: Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Students will be able to identify the conditions in post WW II Britain which created the youth revolution in rock’n’roll and the band known as the Beatles. 2. Students will be able critically evaluate the music and lyrics of the Beatles and place them in the context of history, politics, social changes and religious awakening during the 1960s. 3. Students will be able to find a variety of information, written, recorded, viral, on the band, its members, and the audience so affected by the Beatles, and communicate them in written and oral form. 4. Students will be able to make connections between the Beatles and the change in social norms for the youth culture in Great Britain and the United States. 5. Students will be able to assess the role the Beatles played in creating the world of music, social behavior, commercial marketing and political participation that they live in today. Students will learn the history of Great Britain that creates the environment for a generational and cultural shift in the 1960s. Students will reflect upon messages in music, lyric, art, film advertising, religion to track that historical shift. Students will do individual and group research with a variety of resources and present them to their peers. Students will reflect upon their role as consumers of culture and material goods today and how the Beatles started this generational shift of cultural and material influence on society as a whole. Students will evaluate the political and social influence of entertainers of their own generation. How Student Learning will be Assessed: (describe or attach) Example Assignment: Student learning will be assessed by Direct Assessment through written assignments and group projects that reflect reading, research, analysis and critical thinking, as well as the students’ ability to to connect what they have learned about music, society, youth culture, etc., to their own experience. The latter would be assessment through an indirect assessment measure, such as a reflection paper. Nov. 6 Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Psychedelic, Gould, chapters 36-7 (describe or attach) Writing Assignment No. 2: The Music and Message Changes: Analysis of a Beatles Album Students will select two pieces of music from this album and compare and contrast them, musically and the message voice in the lyrics, composer and performer, with one piece from Meet the Beatles, Revolver and Rubber Soul.
