Crime Prevention Programs Uniform Crime Reporting began in 1930 when city, county, and state law enforcement agencies voluntarily provided the FBI with crime statistics. Our department reported our crime statistics through the Stevens Point Police Department until 1999. Since that time we have assumed responsibility for reporting our own statistics to the Department of Justice, who in turn reports to the FBI. Crime Prevention Programs are essential in reducing crime on our campus. Every student, staff and faculty member must take a proactive approach by anticipating the potential for crime, recognizing it and then taking some type of action to help prevent it. The campus community must take some responsibility for their own protection and that of their own personal and state property. UCR statistics are used by a variety of different groups, and are not just a law enforcement tool. They provide valuable assistance in formulating police budgets, communities identifying specific crime problems, advertising tools for tourism agencies, and a number of other uses. However, they can also be used wrongly. UCR statistics should not be used to rank cities, counties, states or universities. A number of factors influence a community’s crime and clearance rate. UCR statistics do not identify those outside factors. The UCR report below is provided as an informational item and should be viewed only as such. Several Crime Prevention Programs are currently available through this office. The following is a partial list of those programs offered.
