Topics to be covered include numbers, functions, sequences, series, counting problems, graphs of functions, inverse functions, polynomials, rational functions, n-th roots, exponential functions, logarithms, piecewise defined functions, matrices, and matrix equations. Text: “Streamlined course on the fundamentals of precalculus” by Kevin Wortman. Available at: http : //www.math.utah.edu/ ∼ lzinnbj/1050su14 Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 3:00-4:00. My office is LCB 311. Email: lzinnbj@math.utah.edu [preferred method of contact] Calculators are not required for this course, are not needed for homework, and will not be allowed on exams. Homework: Homework is to be completed on WeBWork. Go to http://www.math.utah.edu/online/ww/classes.html or the course website to access WeBWork assignments. Assignments will be due on Wednesday and Sunday nights. Problems are not found in WeBWork, only answer blanks. Problems can be found at the end of each section in your textbook. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given twice per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, except for midterm days) on the material recently covered in class. Quiz problems will be based on assigned homework problems. The lowest two quiz scores will be dropped. Because your lowest two scores are dropped, make-up quizzes will NOT be offered. If you need to miss class on the day of a quiz, that quiz will automatically become one of your dropped scores. Important dates: Class will meet every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (except for holidays) from Thursday, June 19 to Wednesday, July 30. Midterm Exams: Thursday, July 3 and Thursday, July 17. Both midterms will be given during the second half of class time. Final Exam: Thursday, July 31 in LCB 219 from 12:30-2:30 [in-class final]. The final exam will be cumulative; it will cover all the material from the course. 1 Grading: Your grade will be based on the following: Homework: 15% Quizzes: 15% Midterms: 40% (20% each) Final exam: 30% Your lowest midterm score will be replaced by your score on the final exam (if higher), and your two lowest quiz scores will be dropped. Letter grades: Determined from your grade percentage (N) as follows: 93 ≤ N ≤ 100 90 ≤ N < 93 87 ≤ N < 90 83 ≤ N < 87 80 ≤ N < 83 77 ≤ N < 80 73 ≤ N < 77 70 ≤ N < 73 67 ≤ N < 70 63 ≤ N < 67 60 ≤ N < 63 N < 60 A AB+ B BC+ C CD+ D DE There will be no extra credit, rounding up, or makeup exams. Mathematics Tutoring Center: Drop in, sit down, and if you have a question, someone will come by who can help you. There are also group study rooms and tutoring sessions available. Located on 1st Floor of JWB or LCB. Open 8am-8pm MTWH; 8am-6pm F. The ASUU Tutoring Center at 330 SSB can arrange for private tutors at a reasonable rate.
