AllAfrica.com, Washington 12-17-07 Varsity Set to Open Four New Schools Kenyatta University will introduce four new programmes in the new year.ViceChancellor Prof Olive Mugenda announced that the university would establish the School of Visual Arts and Performing Arts, School of Economics, School of Engineering and Technology, School of Agriculture and Enterprise Development and School of Law. Speaking during the university's graduation ceremony on Friday, Prof Mugenda said the new programmes are part of the university's plan to provide marketdriven programmes. The university recently added Pwani University and Kitui campus to its stable. More than 3,500 graduands were awarded certificates during the ceremony attended by Education permanent secretary Prof Karega Mutahi. Others present were the university chancellor Dr Harris Mule, council chairman Prof Onesmo Ole-MoiYo and chairman of Iowa State University Alumni Mr Jeffrey Johnson. Equity Bank chief executive Mr James Mwangi was awarded a honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for his "outstanding achievements in transforming the lives of thousands of ordinary people in Kenya and beyond". Prof Mugenda noted that in addition to Mr Mwangi's innovative leadership in the financial sector, Equity Bank was actively involved in the promotion of education and arts. The bank has a sponsorship programme for the best performers in the Kenya Certificates of Secondary Education in every district that it operates. It also introduced a pre-university internship programme for the best two students from every district where the bank operates. Equity also sponsors major artistic events such as the schools and colleges national drama and music festivals.
