MINIMUM STANDARDS
OF
SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS
Federal regulations require that all students meet minimum standards of satisfactory academic progress to receive financial aid.
A.
Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress
1.
Time Frame: Each student receiving financial aid will be expected to complete his or her course of study within a period not to exceed 1.5 times the length of his/her program of study; e.g., a two-year program of study (six semesters) must be completed within three years (nine semesters) of attendance.
2.
Qualitative Measures: Each student will be expected to meet or exceed the following Grade Point
Average (GPA) at the indicated points in their program of study:
Attempted
12 – 21 hours
Required Overall GPA
- 1.50 GPA
22 – 32 hours
33 hours and above
- 1.75 GPA
- 2.00 GPA
Students must have attained an overall “C” average (2.00 GPA) by the end of their second academic year of study (regardless of enrollment status during the two-year period). Please be reminded that developmental course grades will NOT be factored, (will not count), into your overall GPA.
3.
Quantitative Measures: Each student must pass at least 67% of the hours attempted.
Satisfactory academic progress will be checked annually before Pell Grant funds are awarded.
Amnesty, Bankruptcy, and course forgiveness hours will be counted in the time frame and completion rate for financial aid consideration.
B.
Probation
A student’s failure to meet any of the above conditions will result in the student being placed on financial aid probation for a period not to exceed one (1) semester. During this probationary period, the student may continue to receive financial aid. However, if the student fails to comply with the minimum standards of satisfactory academic progress at the end of the probationary period, financial aid will be terminated.
C.
Academic Suspension
Financial Aid will be terminated when a student is placed on academic suspension.
D.
Reinstatement
E.
Program of Study
Students receiving financial assistance must be enrolled in a program of study which leads to a certificate, diploma, or degree, and must follow the course description. Students must take courses within their program of study or their financial aid award will be adjusted.
F.
Course Withdrawals, Incompletes, Repetitions, and Non-credit Remedial Courses
A student withdrawing from the College and falls below the minimum standards of academic progress after receiving one semester probation will have his/her financial aid terminated. A student with an incomplete (I) in a course should be aware that incompletes automatically become F’s after two weeks of the next semester. A student may not receive Title IV financial aid to repeat courses in which they received a passing grade, unless a written request from their instructor, with the approval of the appropriate dean, is submitted to the financial aid office. Exception is given to students enrolled in
Allied Health courses where a grade of “B” or better is required. Students will be allowed a maximum of 32 attempted developmental course hours . A class may be attempted a maximum of three (3) times.
G.
Extenuating Circumstances and Appeals
Students who received financial aid and have had their eligibility terminated may appeal this decision in writing to the Financial Aid Committee. This written appeal should explain reasons for the noncompliance with the minimum standards and plans for bringing their grades into compliance with the policy.
H.
Disbursement of Financial Aid Funds
Disbursement checks will be mailed approximately 14 days after the last day of the drop/add period.
Students who are reported as non-attendance in a class will have their Pell award adjusted.
Students can purchase books/supplies in the SSCC bookstore prior to the first day of class once all tuition and fees are paid in full.
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Cashier’s Office to have their tuition and fees charged to their financial aid.
I.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) and Alabama Student Assistant Program (ASAP)
Grant
Applicants receiving awards under these programs must be enrolled at least half time. If your enrollment status is not at least half time, you will not receive this award.
Students may have their financial aid reinstated if they attend the College, at their own expense, and bring their grades and or completion rate into compliance with the minimum standards of satisfactory academic progress. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Office of Financial Aid when their grades and or completion rate are brought into compliance with the policy. Financial aid will not retroactively pay for any periods of enrollment during which the student was not eligible.
