Community Education and Lifelong Learning Summer 2015 Welcome to the Summer 2015 schedule of courses offered by Shelton State Community College’s Community Education and Lifelong Learning Center. Courses for both programs are included in this schedule. While Lifelong Learning classes are open only to seniors 55 and older, Community Education classes (with the exception of age specific classes) are open to everyone. Neither program requires high school graduation or GED for participation. COMMUNITY EDUCATION COMPUTERS INTRO TO COMPUTERS, WINDOWS, WORD, AND THE INTERNET COM 142-50 Course Fee: $125 M June 8 - 29 6:00 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. Martin Room 1362 4 sessions For the absolute beginner, this course offers an introduction to the world of computers including basic information on the computer, use of Windows, the Internet, and email. Basic word formatting, including production of a document, will also be taught. Text: The Practical PC, 4th Edition by Parsons and Oja. PHYSICAL FITNESS COMMUNITY/FACULTY/STAFF SUPER CIRCUIT COM 167-50 Course Fee: $65 T/W/Th June 2 - July 30 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Martin Room 1260 Specifically designed for the faculty, staff, and community at Shelton State, this course will encourage physical health, body toning, aerobic conditioning, muscle tone development, weight maintenance, and osteoporosis prevention. Upon request, the instructor will assist participants in designing an exercise program to meet individual physical needs. ZUMBA COM 164-50 Course Fee: $30 T/Th June 2 - July 30 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Martin Room 1261 Zumba is an adult, dance-based fitness class that uses a fusion of Latin and International rhythms with easyto-follow moves. It includes both cardio and resistance training components designed to tone and sculpt the entire body. Zumba is designed for adults of all ages and fitness levels. Class participants at any level can start Zumba right away. COMPUTERS KEYBOARDING 101 LLL 701-01 Course Fee: $30 T June 2 - 16 10:00 a.m. - noon Fredd 606 3 Sessions This is a beginning class to improve keyboarding skills. Alphabetic, numeric, and common symbols will be covered in exercises to teach speed and accuracy. WINDOWS LLL 702-01 Course Fee: $30 Th June 4 - 25 10:00 a.m. - noon Fredd 606 4 Sessions This is a beginning computer course designed to introduce the Windows operating system. Learn to use the mouse and task bars, explore menus and files, modify your computer environment, and perform routine file maintenance tasks. It is important to have access to a computer to practice the skills learned. INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT WORD LLL 705-01 Course Fee: $30 Th July 2 - 23 10:00 a.m. - noon Fredd 606 4 sessions Prerequisite: Keyboarding & Windows Learn Microsoft Word; how to enter, edit, and format text; use spell check; use toolbars; and work with multiple documents. Students should be able to type at least 30 wpm. This class will teach you how to set up an email account, how to send and receive emails, how to organize your email, and how to keep up with your contacts. TABLET LLL 707-01 Course Fee: $30 Th Aug 13-20 10:00 a.m. - noon Fredd 606 2 sessions Tablets are powerful tools for enhancing your online experience. This class will teach you how to set up your tablet, download applications, and use it in many different ways. Please bring your tablet to class. ART WATERCOLOR LLL 773-01 Course Fee: $30 (Cost for supplies is not included.) F May 29, June 5, 12, 19 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Martin Room 1943 4 sessions In this beginning course, you will learn basic drawing and watercolor techniques, basic color theory, paint mixing, and the use of a paintbrush and other materials. ACRYLIC OR OIL PAINTING LLL 901-01 Course Fee: $30 (Cost for supplies is not included.) F June 26, July 17, 24, 31 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Martin Room 1943 4 sessions Acrylics and oils are used by many fine artists and illustrators. Some art experience is desirable but not required for this course. If you have not had drawing, color theory, or basic instruction in the elements and principles of design and composition, you will be given brief instruction in these areas. The following guidelines must be followed: (1) An individual must be 60 years of age or older at the time of enrollment; (2) Each course may be taken only one time; (3) A person will be placed in a course after 15 students have been enrolled; (4) The individual must provide proof of high school graduation or the equivalent. REGISTRATION AND WITHDRAWAL POLICY A variety of special interest courses are offered through Community Education. Most classes require a minimum number of participants. Interested persons should register at least two days prior to the starting date of the class to ensure enrollment. This may be achieved by contacting Rachel Waldrop in Community Education at rwaldrop@sheltonstate.edu. Payment may be made by cash, check, or credit card through the Cashier’s Office on the Martin Campus. For your convenience, credit card payments may be made via telephone by calling the Cashier’s Office at 205.391.5831. Checks and money orders should be made payable to SSCC. To withdraw from a class, a student must contact Community Education at 205.391.2386. In order to receive a refund, students must withdraw before the first day of class. A 95 percent refund will be given to those students who withdraw before the deadline (100 percent minus a five percent administrative processing fee.) Failure to attend the program does not constitute cancellation. All fees will be refunded in full for class cancellations due to insufficient enrollment.
