Day Program. Calhoun’s vision is “Success for every

The late United States Senator James B. Allen from Alabama was a strong advocate for
order in the U.S. Senate and in the lives of his constituents. The James B. Allen Pin is

The National Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society offers cash awards of $750
to members of Sigma Kappa Delta who are actively involved in the chapter during
the semester of application. Each winner may use the scholarship award as he/she
chooses. The Dr. Sheila H. Byrd Service Scholarship honors the longest serving
National Director of Sigma Kappa Delta. This scholarship awards $750 yearly.

TERM CARE SCHOLARSHIP
Presented by Bret McGill, Dean, Health Sciences Division
This award is given to a Practical Nursing student in the spring semester who has
successfully passed one semester of nursing courses, maintained at least a 2.5 grade
point average, and is deemed in need of financial assistance. The recipient is awarded
$500 per semester, must be an Alabama resident and must perform a portion of
clinical experiences in a long-term facility.

Most Outstanding Students
JAMES THOMAS BURTON, II – is a Microcomputer Applications major from Huntsville,
Alabama. He currently serves as the Interim President of the Photography and
Broadcasting Club, Senator for SGA, and is an active member of the Emerging Scholars
Program, Baptist Campus Ministries, Calhoun Entrepreneurs Club, as well as both the Phi
Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta honor societies. James is active in his community
through volunteering at his local church by operating the soundboard and recording
system. He is also a member of Huntsville Indie Filmmakers. His goal is to complete his education at
Athens State University and obtain a position where he can be challenged to use his various skills in
photography, videography, audio recording, computer use, data analysis, writing, and public speaking. His
GPA is 4.0.
VICTORIA DENSLOW – is a Nursing major from Hartselle, Alabama. She currently serves
as an officer for the Calhoun Drama Club, is active as an actor, singer, and dancer for the
Calhoun’s Theater Program, and is active in both the Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa
Delta honor societies. She was the recipient of the Betsy Cantrell Memorial Scholarship
for the 2014-2015 year. Victoria is active in her community through volunteering with the
Decatur Chamber of Commerce, teaching 5th and 6th graders at her local church, and
assisting as a school nurse at the local elementary school. Her goal is to obtain her nursing degree from
Calhoun and then eventually continue her education to become a nurse practitioner. She would also like
to minor in Spanish in order to better serve her community. Her GPA is 3.8.
ANNA FELIS – is a Child Development major from Madison, Alabama. She is an active
member of Phi Theta Kappa, was named to the President’s List several semesters, and
has received numerous scholarships from Calhoun in the past two years. She is also a
member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Anna
is active in her community through teaching children’s Bible Study and serving as a
Sunday School teacher and nursery worker at her local church. Her goal is to complete
her education at Athens State University and eventually obtain her master’s degree in Library Science in
order to become a children’s Librarian. Her GPA is 4.0.
YESSELIZ MICHELLE FERIA – is a Chemistry major from Huntsville, Alabama. She was
named as one of only two students nominated as Calhoun’s All USA Academic Team
members for 2015. She is an active officer/member for the Phi Theta Kappa honor
society. Yesseliz serves her community by volunteering at local elementary schools and
the United Way through Calhoun’s Service Learning Program. Her goal is to pursue a
degree at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, with a major in Chemistry and a
minor in Forensics. She would like to eventually work in a criminal lab for the FBI. Her GPA is 3.6.
KIRSTEN GILBERT – is a General Studies major from Huntsville, Alabama. She is a member
of Phi Theta Kappa and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Kirsten is active in her community through her participation on the choir and praise team
at her local church. She was also a Vacation Bible School volunteer. She also volunteers
at the local Downtown Rescue Mission. Kirsten’s goal is to pursue a degree in Psychology
with a minor in Business and eventually become a psychologist. She would enjoy working
with foster children and families in order to help them find and adapt to new homes. Her GPA is 3.7.

GRAYSON “RIVERS” HOVATER – is a General Studies major from Madison, Alabama. He
currently serves as Campus Coordinator of the Student Government Association at
the Huntsville campus. He is a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American
Universities and Colleges. Rivers serves his community through volunteering at Manna
House, which is a facility that provides food and supplies to the local homeless community.
He also serves as a Worship Intern at his local church and contributes through his talents
as a musician, singer, and songwriter. He has also assisted with setting up and coordinating many events
at his church. Rivers’ goal is to eventually obtain a master’s degree in Theology/Religion, with a minor in
Music and become a pastor or worship leader someday. His GPA is 3.6.
BRITTANY LOCKE – is a General Studies major from Elkmont, Alabama. She currently
serves as President for SGA at the Decatur campus, President for Baptist Campus
Ministries, a Peer Mentor for the Emerging Scholars Program, and is an active member
of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Brittany also serves as a student representative on
Calhoun’s Achieving the Dream committee. She also serves as a work study student in the
Student Affairs Division. Brittany serves her community through active involvement in
her local church and through participation in many mission trips over the years to places like Mississippi,
Kansas, Tennessee, and Michigan. Her goal is to obtain an Accounting degree from UA Huntsville in
order to eventually help others to manage their money and complete their taxes correctly. Her GPA is 3.7.
TAYLOR PETERS – is a General Studies major from Meridianville, Alabama. She was
named as one of only two students nominated as Calhoun’s All USA Academic Team
members for 2015. She currently serves as a both President and Senator for SGA at the
Huntsville campus, as well as a Calhoun Warhawk ambassador. She is also an active
member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Taylor serves her community through
her involvement as a worship leader and choir member at her local church, as well as
an assistant teacher and nursery worker. Her ultimate goal is to complete her degree in Education from
Athens State University and ultimately become a math teacher. She hopes to create a fun and creative
environment for learning a subject such as math that can be very intimidating to some students. Her
GPA is 4.0.
MICHAELA RUSSELL – is a Nursing major from Ardmore, Alabama. She is an active
member of the Calhoun Nursing Club, the Alabama Public Health Association, and Phi
Theta Kappa honor society. She is a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American
Universities and Colleges. Michaela is involved in her community by serving as a team
captain and raising funds at Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. Through her
personal experience of being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, she was inspired to
become a nurse. After obtaining her Nursing degree at Calhoun, she would like to eventually serve as an
oncology nurse and provide encouragement and hope for others diagnosed with cancer. Her GPA is 3.8.
JAIME NICOLE THIGPEN – is a General Studies major from Athens, Alabama. She is an
active peer mentor and sociology tutor for Calhoun’s Emerging Scholars Program. She
serves as an active member of both the Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta honor
societies, and was the Vice President of the Calhoun Entrepreneurs Club in spring 2013.
Jaime serves her community through her involvement as a peer mentor for the youth
and young adults at her local church, as well as a volunteer as a team mom for her son’s
high school football team. Jaime’s career goal is to eventually obtain a bachelor’s degree in Sociology
and a master’s degree in Psychology in order to counsel youth and young adults with addictions and
behavioral disorders. Her GPA is 3.8.
