Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 GRΣΣK LIFΣ eport Presented by the InterFraternity Council Edited by Caleb Stoll, Public Relations 1|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 From the Editor: This is the Spring Quarter Issue of the Greek Life Report to keep the campus up-to-date on the activities of our men’s and women’s chapters here at Rose. We have just elected a new executive board for the Interfraternity Council and can’t wait to see how they will improve the Greek Life community as a whole. We have started the Rush process as we develop the calendar and as each chapter begins to fill those weeks with their events. We are also anxiously awaiting this year’s Greek Games in May, after adding some new events and bringing back some old ones, we are hoping it will be even more successful than last year. I would like to thank Tom Miller, the IFC, and the Panhellenic Council for all their help with this year’s issue. Sincerely, Caleb Stoll Editor 2|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Delta Xi Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi AOΠ This year the Delta Xi Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi initiated eight lovely ladies into our sisterhood. These ladies are already very active and are always willing to help out. Five of these ladies have already jumped right in and have taken an office after being initiated in December. These women are: Jayme Brace, Natalie Buckley, Taelar Burris, Nicole Mora, and Jackie Preston. All of our new members are finding their place and continue to help improve our chapter. Along with eight new members we also have a new chapter advisor, Kristina Lawyer. This is very exciting for us because Kris was among the colonizing members of the Delta Xi chapter and it is very nice to have one of our own alumna helping out. Our major philanthropy event, Mr. Rose, was very successful again this year. We had a wonderful turn out and the contest was a hit. There were twelve contestants and Dakota Huckaby, nominated by AXΣ, was crowned Mr. Rose. The Contestants all did a wonderful job and we appreciate all of the support we received! Delta Xi also sent two officers, Lauren Miller and Jayme Brace, to Alpha Omicron Pi’s headquarters for a Leadership Academy. It was located in Brentwood, Tennessee and was very informative, focusing on alumnae retention. Those ladies learned a lot about AOII and their offices and are excited to see how they can improve Delta Xi. -Lauren Miller 3|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Indiana Gamma Gamma Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega ATΩ The 2013 Rush year of the Indiana Gamma Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity proved to be one of its most rewarding and prosperous Rushes to date. After many socials, events, dinners, and formals, the Gamma Gamma Chapter welcomed 31 new pledges for the 2013 Pledge Class of ATO including pledge class president Ben Bernard as well as JD Briones and Clay Brawner as IFC Representatives. During the 2013 Fall Rush, the potential pledges were invited to a variety of events which were designed to introduce the incoming freshman to the idea of participating in Greek Life on the Rose-Hulman campus. Among the many events were Wet n’ Wild, 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, 4th Meal, Paintball, Poker Night, Monday Night Football, a trip to Dave & Busters, individual dinners, and the Alumni Dinner where a certain number of rushees visited the Ron Reeves Chapter House to hear speeches from Alumni while enjoying a multiple course meal. From the many rushees that attended these events, 31 signed the ATO bid card on Bid Tuesday and became official Pledges of the Gamma Gamma Chapter. Many philanthropic and charitable happenings along with some brotherly events have taken place since Bid Tuesday. Some of these events were ATO’s participation in Bikes for Tykes, Shop with a Cop, the annual cleanup of Hunt Road, a can drive, and a Christmas celebration for the kids of Big Brothers Big Sisters where they participated in crafts, enjoyed snacks, and also received a gift from Santa Claus. So far this year has been very productive and rewarding for the men and pledges of the Indiana Gamma Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. -Clay Brawner 4|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Gamma Lambda Chapter of Chi Omega XΩ The Gamma Lambda Chapter of Chi Omega has been on Rose-Hulman’s campus since 1996. Since then, we’ve grown to about 60 women who are involved all over campus and leave Rose to engage in fulfilling careers in all aspects of engineering and science. During recruitment this year, we gained 14 lovely new ladies to add to our chapter. These girls include Katie Demaree, Katie Lee, Liah Tresemer, Catherine Ling, Coco Liu, Addison Zhang, Lexi Harris, Kylie Bain, Emily Westerback, Sarah Volkman, Kayla Storie, Ellie Hong, Abbie Marshall, and Andrea Schultz. We are so excited to see them flourish as new members of chapter and experience the sisterhood of Chi Omega. These ladies were initiated in January of 2014. As a chapter, we have helped women to obtain their scholastic goals through sisterhood and support, and have always strived to obtain high GPA averages. We are proud to say we have had the highest Greek GPA on campus for the past four quarters. We also received the Award of Achievement a few years ago at our national convention. This award is given to chapters that achieve a number of goals, including recruitment goals, scholarship goals, philanthropic goals, leadership goals, etc. Additionally, three of our senior members; Kira Boswell, Kate Dangel, and Elaine Schaudt; received the honor student award this year which is given to those who excite academic expectations. Each year, we sponsor Make-A-Dish for Make-A-Wish with our Chi Omega sisters from Indiana State University. It is a buffet style dinner with a carnival that takes place in the union. All proceeds benefit a child in the Make-A-Wish foundation. Last year, we raised thousands of dollars, granting Nolan his wish to go to Disney Land. This year we plan to raise money for Jaden who has wished to go to Hawaii with his family. We also have a new addition to our annual philanthropy events that is Run for Wishes, which has been organized for the last two years. This is an event celebrating Make a Wish and all of the great things they do worldwide. Both events are amazing experiences and to see our hard work make a difference in some else’s life is priceless. In addition to our scholarship and philanthropic endeavors, we enjoy spending time together as sisters throughout the year. We have an annual sisterhood retreat, which is an awesome way to have fun with sisters and additionally have gone laser tagging this year and roller skating in past years. During the fall, we go to a haunted hayride as a sisterhood event. We also put together events for weekends like Homecoming, Dad’s Day, Mom’s Day and many others. For more information and to meet all of our sisters, please visit the Chi Omega Gamma Lambda Facebook page or our website at http://chiomegarhit.wix.com/xorhit . -Bianca Maled 5|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Gamma Pi Chapter of Delta Delta Delta ∆∆∆ Tri Delta started the year off well with an eventful recruitment season and gained 14 new members. As the year went on, the new members were educated in the history and traditions of Tri Delta and, soon, the entire class was initiated as official members to the Sigma Class of Delta Delta Delta. The members of the Sigma Class include Natalie Aw, Hannah Conover, Morgan Cook, Jamie Crowell, Ellissa Eckert, Kaelyn Griffin, Tina Gutman, Carolyn Holthouse, Dana Kohls, Janel Lake, Savannah Rice, Myra Tamayo, Anna Tierney, and Shelby VanHoosier. In addition to the initiation of the Sigma Class, Tri Delta has also kept busy this year with numerous philanthropic events. All of Tri Delta's philanthropic events are held in honor of and to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a hospital which provides much-needed health care to children who would otherwise not be able to receive treatment. Tri Delta kicked off the year with their annual Tri-Hop event, a pancake dinner prepared and served by the women of Tri Delta. This year, Tri Delta raised approximately $2,000 at their Tri-hop event. The next philanthropic event held by Delta Delta Delta was Sincerely Yours. This was the first year for this event, in which the members of Tri Delta send letters requesting donations for St. Jude to their family, friends, and alumnae. This year, the Gamma Pi chapter was able to raise over $4,000 through the Sincerely Yours event. Another philanthropic event held by Tri Delta this year was Greek Penny Wars. With much participation from all of the fraternities and sororities on campus, Tri Delta was able to raise approximately $1,000 through the Greek Penny Wars. Thank you to all fraternities and sororities for their participation and a special thank you and congratulations to the winner of Greek Penny Wars, Sigma Nu. Finally, Tri Delta is currently preparing for their final philanthropic event of the year, Teeter-Totter-a-Thon. In this event, held from 6:00 p.m. May 9 until 6:00 p.m. May 10, the women of Delta Delta Delta will teeter totter non-stop for 24 hours. This event will be held at Kroger South and is based solely off of donations and corporate sponsorships. Tri Delta hopes to raise over $1,000 at this event. Furthermore, in order to promote and strengthen their philanthropic drive, over one-third of the RoseHulman chapter of Delta Delta Delta spent a weekend at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee during quarter break. These members were able to meet several patients and doctors of St. Jude and learned how greatly the donations of Tri Delta help these children in need. The trip was both heart-breaking and inspirational. As a final piece of good news, the women of Delta Delta Delta would like to share that they have met their national goal to raise 15 million dollars for the children of St. Jude a year and a half earlier than originally planned. Thank you to all of the members of the Rose-Hulman community who contributed to the completion of this goal. -Morgan Cook 6|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Zeta Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi ∆ΣΦ Delta Sigma Phi was nationally founded in 1899, and this chapter was chartered on April 23, 1982. Since then, we have been heavily involved in the community of Terre Haute and Rose-Hulman. Our brothers strive to uphold the values that we all share, which brought us together in the first place. Our chapter has a rich tradition of representing Rose Greek Life to our national headquarters. We have been awarded the “Pyramid of Excellence,” the highest honor a chapter can receive, three times since being colonized. Brothers of Delta Sig are always working together on their coursework and helping each other with homework. We find that being directly connected with older brothers who have taken the classes is a great peer-tutoring network. Our study habits support that Delta Sigma Phi holds one of the best academic averages on campus. For the past few years, our chapter achieved an average GPA higher than the campus average. Our chapter president Along with these honors, brothers of Delta Sig make sure to have a positive impact individually on RoseHulman’s campus. We have brothers involved with ResLife, and others revitalized the Paintball Club. The Ultimate Frisbee Club has a good number of brothers as does the Outdoor Ventures Club. We also have a hand in SAE, EcoCar, and the newly formed Rose-Hulman Hackers. Multiple brothers assist the radio station and have radio shows. Varsity athletes and AXE members also comprise our brotherhood. Each year, Delta Sig holds its Basketball Marathon benefitting the Terre Haute chapter of the March of Dimes. Brothers will seek community support asking for companies to sponsor us as we play basketball non-stop for 12 hours. While basketball is continuously being played, there are other events happening simultaneously, such as a 3-on-3 tournament and a 3 point shootout. All proceeds go to the March of Dimes. This year, the Basketball Marathon will be held on May 17 in the SRC. Our fall pledge class this year brought us 13 new active brothers. Every pledge class does something to improve the Delta Sigma Phi house. This last pledge class painted the second floor landing, and repaired the structural integrity of multiple dining tables and benches. For their service project, they spent quality time visiting the resident of the Terre Haute Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Our spring pledge class is comprised of 3 great men who look to add to the next solid generation of Delta Sigma Phi. When we aren’t studying or giving back, Delta Sig enjoys an assortment of activities. On a given weekend, we have brothers participating in swim meets, track meets, Ultimate Frisbee matches, movie or television marathons at the house, and a multitude of other activities. Our alumni regularly return to our house, on 6th Street and give back to Delta Sig. The time invested in brotherhood at Delta Sig will have lifelong rewards, and our alumni are proof of the lasting ties of Delta Sigma Phi. -Alexander Bair and David Gartkze 7|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Rho Phi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta FIJI The 2013 Fall Semester was an exceptionally great term for the Rho Phi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta. Members of FIJI excelled not only in the classroom, but in the athletics and activities that they took part in. Through hard work and dedication, we achieved top fraternity GPA for the fall quarter. We can credit the hard work of our Scholarship Chair and his committee, who organized our day-long study session prior to finals. Our upperclassmen also were helpful in mentoring our younger brothers in their major areas. The beginning of the school year brought with it a new pledge class after fall Rush. FIJI proudly added 38 quality men to our ranks that will carry on the virtues of our fraternity. This outstanding pledge class raised the chapter’s members to 108 making FIJI one of the largest fraternities at Rose-Hulman. This pledge class includes 27 varsity athletes, of whom 4 are members of two sports. The class also includes Lilly Scholars as well as National Merit Finalists, recipients of local and Rose financial awards, and members of several campus organizations. Brothers of FIJI took part in numerous service projects during the fall as well. The entire fraternity took part in planting trees and painting handrails for Campus Beautification Day, and a total of 70 brothers attended Clothe-a-Child and Bikes for Tykes. FIJI also teamed up with Chi Omega to put on our annual Happiness Bag event, in which brothers donate money in order to buy presents for mentally handicapped adults. The chapter hosted a dinner for the guests and a portly- sized pledge dressed up as Santa to distribute the gifts. However, the largest volunteer work the chapter has taken part in was the 4th annual FIJI Football Run. We work with the Tau Chapter of Hanover to run a football over 150 miles from Hanover’s campus to Rose-Hulman’s before a home football game. Brothers at Hanover start with the ball and take it to Bloomington, where we take the handoff and finish the run before the next day’s game. This event is to show our support for our official philanthropy, the American Red Cross, by raising money to donate. This year we raised over $4,000. This fall many brothers of FIJI were active members of the football and cross country teams helping make both sports successful. Many of those athletes being named for All-Conference teams. FIJI also was active in IM’s by winning the dodgeball tournament, the golf scramble, and A and B football as well. In addition to involvement in sports, we have have one RA and three SAs. We also include in our membership Tau Beta Pi as well as involvement in many other campus honor organizations and clubs. Also, we had over 125 brothers and their families return for Homecoming 2013, where we provided a food and reception tent for our graduate brothers as well as a reception at our chapter house. Fall quarter was an eventful one for the men of the Rho Phi chapter. We are proud of the impact our brothers make on the Rose Community as a whole, and proud to be a part of the thriving Greek Community here at Rose. We look forward to the rest of the 2013-14 year. -Ryan Dick 8|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Theta Kappa Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha ΛΧΑ This year’s fall rush was large and exciting. With such events as paintball, a large cookout, and our annual visit to Cracker’s Comedy Club in Indianapolis, we attracted many new faces to our brotherhood during rush season. In terms of numbers, we added 27 new members at the end of fall rush. Since then, 22 of them have been initiated. Over the past few quarters, we have also had the opportunity to bond as brothers through a variety of opportunities. For instance, in the fall we asked for and received a great response from the community as they donated their extra canned goods to our North American Food Drive. As the holidays (and winter break) closed in upon us, the brothers united to throw a Christmas party for the children of Ryves Hall. More on the internal side, our chapter has been striving to strengthen its bond with other chapters of Lambda Chi Alpha around us. We sent a delegation of six brothers to our Midwest Conclave in Bloomington, Indiana, where we learned valuable skills to help us advance our chapter. In addition, we reached out and visited houses at University of Illinois, and Northwestern. Finally, we celebrated the re-chartering of the chapter at ISU. Though we found many new brothers this last fall, we are continuing to search for future brothers this spring. We hope to find more men of the quality and excellence exhibited in our current chapter. -Shane Bruggeman & Steven Doolan 9|Page Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Iota Delta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha ΠΚΑ This year has been very productive for the Iota Delta chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha. This summer our chapter received a scholarship plate for above a 3.0 chapter GPA, recognition for a 100 member chapter, the Chapter Excellence award, and the Housing Improvement Project of the Year at Pi Kappa Alpha’s national conference in Memphis, TN. Due to the great success of the prior year, we were incredibly motivated to out-do ourselves. We feel that once again we had a great rush period this fall. In our rush we strive to find men that represent our values of scholars, leaders, athletes, and gentlemen. From this criterion, we gave out 27 bids and 20 great men signed. We are excited as these new members are very diverse being involved everywhere on campus from intervarsity to varsity athletics. We have high hopes for this class and feel that they will make a great addition to the ideals of Pi Kappa Alpha. In addition to the new members that joined, we tried adding a new event, a day-long trip to St. Louis, MO, while also using the standard events that worked well for us in the past. The event was a great success and will likely become a regular event for us in the future. Our chapter has also been very active in philanthropy this year. We participated in Alpha Omicron Pi’s Mr. Rose, Tri Delta’s Tri-Hop, Chi Omega’s 5K, and Lambda Chi Alpha’s Pumpkin Bash on campus, as well as Delta Gamma’s Anchorsplash and Sigma Kappa’s softball tournament at Indiana State University. In regards to our events, we held a door-to-door canned food drive where we raised 485 lbs. of food. We are also hosting our sixth annual Fire Truck Pull in support of Special Olympics Indiana. It has been a long running and successful event for us and we are looking forward to another successful year. The Iota Delta chapter has also been an active and supportive member of the Terre Haute community. We have served in the Lighthouse missions kitchen, highway cleanup, Northview High School science fair judging, Shop for a Cop, helped clean the Ryves center, Bikes for Tykes, campus beautification for Homecoming, helped set up Goose Poop 5K, and proctored for Math Counts. As this school year comes to a conclusion, we are looking forward to hosting a new event titled Pikeapalooza. We will host other Pike chapters from Indiana State, Purdue, and Indiana, and have sporting and social events. In addition, we will also be having our biannual International Work Day where every Pike chapter across the country spends a day on projects around their chapter house. This year has been very successful and look forward to carrying this success into the future! -Trevor Bischoff 10 | P a g e Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Beta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Nu ΣN The Beta Upsilon chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity has been a part of the Rose-Hulman community since 1896 and is the second oldest fraternity at the school. In the chapter’s 112 years of existence, we have groomed nearly 2,000 men to be leaders of the world around us, and we have instilled in them the values necessary to complement a Rose-Hulman education in order to be successful in today’s world. The brothers of Sigma Nu are a very close group of men. All members feel the same brotherhood any moment they walk through the doors of the chapter house or simply see a brother on campus. The men of Sigma Nu take pride in the values of honor, truth, and love that the fraternity holds dear and remains steadfast to the beliefs that tie all of the brothers together. The men of Sigma Nu take great confidence in the fact that each chapter across the nation is consistently loyal to these values, maintaining honor, truth, and love in everyday acts. This tight brotherhood that Sigma Nu grows between members brings the brothers together to participate in events for the good of Rose-Hulman and the Terre Haute community. For any given event, all men of Sigma Nu are ready to lend a helping hand to enhance the surrounding community. It is for this reason that the men of Sigma Nu have taken part in—and held—many campus philanthropy events such as the annual Sigma Nu Volleybash. Sigma Nu is also always willing to provide support of other fraternities and sororities across the area, holding intrafraternal relationships in very high regards. The values taught by the Sigma Nu fraternity advocate a community involvement that the brothers of the Beta Upsilon chapter take to heart and act on accordingly. Sigma Nu strives to achieve a global approach in the understanding of its values. The men of the Beta Upsilon chapter aim to accomplish this goal by taking multiple chapter trips to various locations across the nation, simply to gain a better understanding of what it really means to be a Sigma Nu. In the past two years alone, these men have traveled to Cincinnati, Myrtle Beach, Destin, New Orleans, Nashville, Chicago, and St. Louis, simply to travel the nation and build even greater bonds of friendship and brotherhood. Sigma Nu prides itself on the ability to take men of promise and not only bring out the best in them but to give them the knowledge, values and friendships that will improve their lives in every aspect. -Paul Bliudzius 11 | P a g e Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Kappa Chapter of Theta Xi ΘΞ This year has been one of transformation for the Kappa Chapter of Theta Xi. Many of our more senior members graduated last spring, and our newer generations have risen to the responsibility of maintaining our chapter. We have worked together on many new projects, including revitalizing our recruitment program. Thanks to our hard-working team of officers and committee chairs we have recruited six associate members with highly promising initiative. Our chapter has also embarked on a campaign of house improvement. We’ve plastered and painted the dining room walls and the brick wall in the basement. In addition, we bought and erected a shed for storing our vast array of tools, and purchased a new and advanced toilet. Moreover, we completely rearranged our media room to be more conducive to home entertainment, and replaced the large-screen television with a projector. Another of our goals achieved this year was to increase our on-campus presence by organizing and hosting general campus events, such as Mario Kart Madness, which had an impressive turnout and inspired others to lend their equipment for the event. We also hosted a Magic: The Gathering tournament which likewise saw considerable attendance. Furthermore, we hosted our third annual LoL for a Cause, a philanthropy event. Nine teams of five signed up and we expect to continue pioneering new improvements in the coming years. -Alex Weissenfels 12 | P a g e Greek Life Report Volume 3 Spring Issue 3-24-2014 Rose-Tech Chapter of Triangle Through the dedication of the men of Triangle, another successful rush was completed. The rush chairs did an amazing job organizing events and getting potential new members to meet current brothers. Our numerous cookouts and tailgates at soccer games kept rushees well fed and out to support Rose sports. Our other successful rush events included Fight Night, Movie Night, and paintballing with the Triangle brothers. Thanks to this effort we gained a pledge class of twenty-four fine gentlemen on bid Tuesday. These young men are now becoming further involved in the fraternity and becoming closer as a pledge class. We are excited to see what these young men have in store for the future of Triangle. Triangle brothers are very involved in all parts of campus life. We have many athletes in the Fraternity and brothers are very supportive of them. We are proud of our brothers on the soccer team who achieved an HCAC tournament championship and a run to the NCAA sweet sixteen, upsetting the number one ranked team in the nation. We also have members on the basketball, baseball, track, cross country, and golf teams which all enjoyed very successful seasons. Triangle brothers are also very active in academic groups on campus. We have members in leadership roles in ASCE, AXE, SGA, and RISE as well as members in many other groups on campus. Triangle is involved in many community service projects around campus. Our big philanthropy project was a canned food drive during the fall for underprivileged families in the Terre Haute area. We collected over 650 cans and other food items. This made sure these families were well fed for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Triangle brothers also helped organize the IFC Shop with a Cop event that bought Christmas presents for underprivileged children. We continue to look forward to helping the community as much as possible in the future. During the fall season, Dylan Lambert, a senior Triangle active, was appointed to the National Council of Triangle as Active Advisor. We are very proud of our brother’s commitment to Triangle Fraternity and look forward to many new leaders to come from Triangle. At Triangle Fraternity, we place a great emphasis on brotherhood. We want to give members an opportunity to grow and mature in an environment that cultivates lifelong friendships. - Tyler Newman and Nick Woerner 13 | P a g e
