Welcome to the 1st annual
Harvey Mudd/Rose Hulman Puzzle Hunt
• Beginning: Welcome to the puzzle hunt event! We will be starting at exactly 2pm on Saturday to make
sure we start at exactly the same time as the Mudd teams. So make sure you arrive 10-15 minutes early. I’ll
be at the starting location at least half an hour early if you have additional questions. The starting location,
btw, can be found on this page.
• Organization: This year’s event has a city theme. The solution to each puzzle will be the name of a city.
Each puzzle or task is worth a certain number of points. Hint-free completion of the puzzle or task will earn
your team full credit. Completion of the puzzle with the use of a hint will earn your team less points. Any
puzzle may be skipped, earning your team zero points.
• Options: The purpose of the event is to have fun! If at any point you are not having fun, call in for help or
simply throw in the towel if you like. All puzzle hunt games have a slight competitive feel simply because
competition can be fun. Don’t forget #1 = Fun! So that being said, most teams take one of two options.
Some teams aim for maximum points staying competitive. Those teams need to budget time and use
strategy about opening hints to maximize points. The other option is the relaxed team. Those teams just
work at whatever pace, try puzzles and when it’s not as much fun to try to solve they open the hint. No time
management is needed. Just see what you get done before the end. Set a phone alarm for 10 minutes prior
to the end and have a fun, relaxed day. Your choice, but it’s often wise if the entire team is on the same page.
• Keeping on track: Record your answers on your answer sheet. This will be used for scoring and
recording hints taken. Hints are available by simply opening the envelope provide with your clue. Solutions
are available by calling a help line. Each puzzle will solve to the name of, or an unambiguous reference to, a
city. This answer must be written on your answer sheet AND you use this answer to determine your next
location. There will be a BIG list of cities that map to various locations on campus. Once you get the solution
city find what map location it corresponds to. Then go there to find your next clue.
• Completing the event: The event will end at 9pm, so you may want to try to budget your time. You must
turn in your answer sheet by 9pm in order to receive a score for the event (so that deadline is important). In
your first clue there will be a sealed envelope with the location of the end of the race. The idea is you might
solve all the puzzles to get to the end –OR- if you don’t solve every puzzle, at like 10 minutes before the event
ends you need to open the end location envelope. You need to make sure to get your solution sheet to game
control before 9pm.
• Information: Teams must make their way by foot through the route laid out for you, solving puzzles and
performing tasks along the way. You must finish a puzzle before starting the next one.
• Phone numbers: If you need a solution or help that isn’t provided in the envelope, etc. – please call Prof.
Schaffer (650)-799-7091, Dr. Fisher (812)-201-6488, Erik Hayes (812) 236-0157, or Kristy Palmer (712)046-0020. Call Schaffer or Fisher for more complex questions. Might store the first two in your cell phone.
• Hints: In general the hints are worth at least half the points for the puzzle. Opening the “hint” should
almost always get you moving down the correct path. You lose some points but they’ll get you moving. All
sealed, unopened hints must be submitted at end of the game along with your answer sheet to prove you
didn’t use them.
• Energy: The event is 7 hours long. Bring FOOD! Your body needs energy! Bring enough to get you
through the event with minimal time lost. Or if you’re a relaxed team, just plan to stop for dinner.
• Reminders: This event is for fun, so no cheating. Your team is an island. You go places because you
solve puzzles not because you see people walking that way. Don’t follow teams. Don’t give or receive unfair
help from other teams. Don’t steal clues… You may use computers, the internet, phone friends for help, …
Come early Saturday to ask other details. There is a spirit of the game and with no true prize people usually
follow the spirit of the game fine. Showing other people up via cheating is no way to go.

Clue #4: Rock on
The Employees of Rockwood Construction
Welcome to Rockwood Construction, Inc. Here at Rockwood we have many employees
and we’ve discovered that each employee is most effective at certain times in the week.
Not everyone can be like Silicon who works best first thing Monday morning, but at least
everyone gets going earlier in the week than Slate who waits for Friday afternoon for his
best work. Sulfur and Aspen always work well the same day of the week, and Quartz
works best on days when Oak is in the building. Too bad Oak is part time and works only
on Tuesday and Thursday (not only that, but he’s completely worthless on one of those
days – I don’t even know why we pay him).
Sandstone certainly works best in the morning and he makes sure to get his good work in
sometime earlier in the week than Oak. Aspen likes to sleep in so he works best in the
afternoon. Quartz gets motivated and works well right after he sees Sandstone doing
good work, but he never gets anything done until sometime later in the week than Pine.
The person in charge of the board meeting we call Partical Board, and he works well
preparing all morning on the day of the weekly board meeting. He requires absolutely
everyone to be at the meeting, even Walnut. Everyone works well sometime in the week
whether it be morning or afternoon, and it seems like no one’s best work overlaps with
anyone else’s. It’s smart for me to know when they each work best so that I can at least
keep some order around here.
Soon we’ll be heading to a famous place. Can you tell me the name of the city we’ll be in
when we get there?
Clue #5: Walk the Plank (Page 1)

appropriate slots on the FAR left and the FAR right. They
should appear in an order such that the words in column 1
are alphabetized.

Physical challenge
Your team is now an Ultimate Frisbee team! Your physical challenge
is to score a goal! You must choose the order in which each team
member will participate and spread yourselves across the field.
You must start with the disc from
one end zone and pass the disc
down the field to the other end
without dropping the disc. If any
member drops the disc, you must
restart from the very beginning.
You get 5 throws to complete this
task and no player is allowed to
throw for over 20 yards (sorry
good Ultimate players).
So if your team has 6 people,
everyone will be involved, but
someone won’t need to throw
(just catch the scoring pass).
Every team member must be
involved. If your team has fewer
than 6 people, you still get 5
throws and someone can throw
again after everyone has thrown
once.
When you complete this challenge you will receive a city solution to place
on your answer sheet, which will tell you where to go next.
Now that you’ve read the rules go get an Ultimate disc to begin!

Clue #13: Time for change
Before the puzzle hunt started, we tried to collect some
money to help with prize money. What better place to look
than the fountains on campus?! It didn't help much, the biggest
coin we found was a quarter. Below is how much we managed
to collect from each fountain.
$4.40
$5.57
$0.65
$2.43
$1.10
$4.94
Sorry for all the change, but we tried to lessen your load as
much as possible. Good luck!!
Clue #14: The Many
Nicknames of Wild Woods
There was once a very famous golfer named Wild Woods. He was
pretty good with his putter and irons, but was often pretty crazy with his
driver (hence the nickname Wild Woods). He once hit his driver so hard he
got a hole-in-one on a par 5, but too often his crazy drives resulted in some
unusually high scores (and some unusual nicknames). Some days he
would shoot exactly par and people called him “Wild Woods” with pride.
Another day he was 21 over par (due to a single hole) and people called
him “Wily Woods” that day. Regardless of how far under or over par he
shoots these days, he’ll always be remembered for the round he played
with the hole-in-one. Funny, I can’t remember his nickname that day…
