Chapter 1.
Getting started: Key questions to
consider
In this chapter, we describe the benefits to be gained by combining the strengths of Lotus
Domino collaborative software and the System i family. The combination of Lotus Domino and
the System i platform delivers a highly scalable and reliable infrastructure for e-collaboration.
Lotus Domino collaboration extends beyond mail and messaging. It offers collaboration to
applications for On Demand Business, helping to shape the future of business interaction by
preserving and extending the human element.
Lotus Domino for i5/OS enables existing System i customers to build and deploy messaging
and collaborative applications on the same system as their enterprise applications and data.
For customers who are looking to reduce their service delivery cost by eliminating server
farms and consolidating to a single platform, the System i platform delivers the scalability and
reliability to support thousands of users and applications.
Before you start down the path toward understanding the significance of messaging and
collaboration, there are several questions to consider. The answers to these questions serve
as a framework for decisions you will make concerning architecture, application design,
software, and hardware. The following sections break down the questions, one at a time, to
provide you some insight.

1.1 Why messaging and collaboration?
Due to the exceptional growth of Internet access over the last several years, messaging
systems have now become an integral part of business life. Messaging systems can facilitate
all forms of information in various formats to flow rapidly and efficiently both internally and
externally to an organization. Business solutions create value by effectively bringing together
hardware, software, people, and processes to solve critical business issues. These issues
might include responding to competitive activity, scheduling production, managing a supply
chain, improving customer satisfaction, or capturing the value of an organization’s knowledge.
Creating these solutions and making them work is one of the great challenges facing
managers today.
Messaging and collaboration is one of the most dynamic and rewarding areas of enterprise
computing systems. Businesses that employ these systems benefit greatly from the
communication, teamwork, and flow of information that these systems encourage. Messaging
and collaboration software provides a corporate messaging solution that includes mailbox,
calendaring, instant messaging, workrooms, distributed database management system, and
wireless. Hosted environments for messaging offer the most comprehensive and secure
manner for deploying these message delivery applications.
Indeed, it has now become commonplace to have messaging and collaboration services
delivered to mobile telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and so on in order that
business people on the move remain in contact with their customers and colleagues.
A messaging and collaboration platform must address the business needs of today and in the
future. It should be designed with high usability and significantly increase your end-user
productivity.
A world-class messaging and collaboration platform should provide your business or
organization with the means to:
򐂰 Integrate your most valuable messaging, collaborative and personal information
management (PIM) resources, for example, e-mail, calendar, organizational data, and
to-do list, and allow users to access them while connected or disconnected from your
network
򐂰 Include enhancements to increase ease-of-use, including background attachment
handling, multi-user support, and customization options
򐂰 Provide industry-leading calendaring and scheduling functionality, which lets users easily
collaborate and schedule meetings with colleagues across the world
򐂰 Help reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) with minimal training, end user productivity
enhancements, and built-in management and administration functionality
1.2 What is Domino?
IBM Lotus Domino is the world’s most successful collaboration product. Domino is software
— a framework, an infrastructure — that connects your people to anyone, anywhere, any
time. Like your job, Domino is difficult to define because it adapts to so many different tasks.
Domino is an environment that makes it easier for you to productively perform structured and
unstructured work using a wealth of rapidly changing information and knowledge. It is
middleware that lets you add the “human touch” to the Web and to your business-to-business
(B2B) interactions. Figure 1-1 identifies key communities aided by Lotus Notes® and Domino

Domino is the brand name for the server component in a family of integrated messaging,
collaboration, and Web application software from IBM. Domino can help you improve the
productivity of your people and enable them to share, manage, and organize information
more efficiently.
Domino is designed for growing organizations that need to improve customer responsiveness
and streamline business processes. Electronic B2B communication, which was once a luxury,
is now a necessity. Electronic mail has become an important application. Web-enabling your
business (On Demand Business) is now a requirement to remain competitive in the
marketplace.
Domino combines security-rich messaging, calendar, and scheduling capabilities with a
robust platform for collaborative applications on a wide variety of operating systems. Domino
provides a scalable, reliable infrastructure that is the basis for communication, decision
making, and document management in a world of On Demand Business. It extends beyond
electronic mail and enterprise calendaring to include a robust and secure Web application
server, a flexible document object store, and a powerful application development
environment.
Domino is built on several key foundations that make it perfect for the applications that today’s
knowledge workers need and extendable for the applications of the future:
򐂰 A unique related database architecture that combines structured and unstructured data,
the foundation for a different type of application than what we build with DB2® and online
transaction processing (OLTP)
򐂰 A messaging infrastructure that lets users and applications send anything to anyone
Rich, full-function e-mail is just one example. With Domino, people can send messages to
applications; applications can send messages to people or to other applications, which is
critical for workflow and business process automation.
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider
3
򐂰 A rich application development environment that’s visual, event-driven, fun, and easy to
use
򐂰 Unmatched replication capability that’s perfect for today’s distributed, mobile workforce
Information can exist in multiple places, such as central servers, distributed servers,
desktops, disconnected mobile computers. Domino keeps it all in sync.
What kind of applications are appropriate for Domino? Many are available as the thousands
available from Lotus independent software vendors (ISVs) demonstrate. They fall into several
broad groups:
򐂰 Collaborative applications that track information (such as ISO9000 projects, legal cases,
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval processes), disseminate information
(corporate policy documents, Human Resources procedures, tips and techniques), and
share ideas (discussion forums)
򐂰 Web applications that focus on information sharing, collaboration, and business process
automation
A Domino database is a collection of documents (just like a Web site). It has built-in
capabilities for sorting and viewing in different ways, for managing the documents
(complete with built-in workflow for approval), and for e-mail integration, which are all
things you need for a good Web site.
򐂰 Knowledge Management, the next wave of applications to manage and leverage
intellectual capital, the new currency of business
With Lotus Domino 7, IBM extends the reach of Lotus Domino messaging and collaboration
solutions while continuing to leverage your IT and application investments. The new version
offers capabilities to support more people with fewer servers, to simplify administration, and to
provide tighter integration with Web standards.
1.2.1 Different from top to bottom
Why is Lotus software from IBM a differentiator? After all, many software vendors offer e-mail,
database access tools, and application development tools. The reason is that business
decision-making cycles are highly collaborative, and messaging is only a small part of the
technology solution.
Our competitors tend to view messaging as the top of an operating system stack, one of
many add-ons. For IBM Lotus software, messaging is the bottom layer of the collaboration
stack, the foundation for a full set of integrated services and tools. That’s a fundamentally
different way of looking at the world and a fundamentally different way of looking at what is
important for the organizational effectiveness of an On Demand Business.
The following sections highlight key product strengths. For additional competitive comparison
information, see the articles posted on the Lotus Competitive Info Web site at the following
address:
http://www.ibm.com/lotus/compare
1.2.2 Robust yet flexible
Domino provides a flexible set of choices for server deployment. Domino runs on a wide
range of hardware and operating system platforms, both IBM and non-IBM. The competitive
advantage provided by the IBM brand is scalability within a processor family, growth across
processor families, and interoperability among systems, to help leverage your investment and
offer low TCO. Platform heterogeneity and independence are essential for inter-enterprise
applications, support for business mergers and acquisitions, and preservation of investment.
4
Lotus Domino for i5/OS: An IBM System i Buying and Selling Guide
Most Domino applications are inherently cross-platform. Applications designed without
dependencies upon the services of a specific operating system and without the use of
external tools or application programming interfaces (APIs) should run unchanged on the
various server platforms that run Domino. These applications can be accessed by Lotus
Notes clients running on various operating system platforms, as well as Web browsers. A
single programming model is used for Notes and Web applications. Application design
changes are immediately available and replicate with the data to servers and clients alike.
Hand in hand with platform independence are customer-controlled migration and coexistence
of mail systems, operating environments, and infrastructure. Not only does Domino support
multiple operating system platforms, it also supports many Internet standards and protocols
including:

Lotus Notes and Domino have product maturity and proven architecture, after being in the
marketplace for over ten years. As of third quarter, 2005, IBM delivered Lotus Notes and
Domino 7. The installed base of Lotus Notes exceeds 120 million seats. Thousands of
independent software vendors offer a large portfolio of Domino-based business applications
in the marketplace. Many of them have ported their applications to the System i platform.
Domino calendaring and scheduling implementation offers flexible, customizable calendaring
integrated with mail on all supported client platforms. It supports cross-node real-time
scheduling. It offers offline free-time search and scheduling as well as interoperability with
other systems. Its powerful functionality includes flexible invitation management (accept,
decline, delegate, reschedule), integration with contact management, support for scheduling
rooms and resources, and the capability to convert memos to calendar entries or tasks and
vice versa.
1.2.3 Highly scalable
Scalability is enhanced by Domino’s replication, directory, and security services. Replication
allows multiple sites, teams, and users to quickly and easily share information. Users never
need to connect to a single central server that stores the only occurrence of a particular
database. Instead, they can access a replica of that database on one or more local servers or
on their client workstation. In addition, server-to-client replication provides disconnected
support to mobile users.
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider
5
Domino supports selective and field-level replication to minimize network traffic and required
bandwidth. Replication is synchronous and compares the contents of the database on each
system within the customer’s Domino and Notes security implementation. Domino supports
multiple directories, which is particularly useful for large organizations and companies
growing by mergers and acquisitions. Lotus Domino clustering and partitioning are unique in
the marketplace for scalability and availability, with capabilities that include automatic server
failover, dynamic load balancing, and server partitioning.
Domino’s hierarchical authentication scales to large organizations by ensuring uniqueness of
names and enabling distributed administration. It also supports inter-enterprise authentication
via cross-certification between organizations. Access control (security) extends down to the
document level (even without encryption), and down to the field level using encrypted fields.
Domino includes delegation support and access control based on roles as an alternative to
lists of specific user or group names.
With Domino, administration can be performed from a connected workstation running the
Domino Administrator client, from a Web browser, or from remote Domino server console.
Using these tools, an administrator can access event monitors, alarms, and statistics reports.
Some administration tasks can be performed offline. Administering Domino servers is easy
and flexible, because monitoring and management support Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) standards and offer integration with leading network management solutions.
Furthermore, a Domino administrator’s life is made easier with an automated process to
support administrative requests such as name changes and access revocation of terminated
users. The process updates access control lists, directory entries, groups, and mail and
calendar free time information. It can even move users’ mail files from one Domino server to
another using drag-and-drop technology built into the Domino Administrator client. In 1.7,
“IBM System i offering value proposition and differentiators” on page 11, we provide details
about additional unique benefits that the System i platform adds to the Domino administrator.

1.3 Why Lotus Domino?
It is legitimate to ask yourself why Lotus Domino (the premiere enterprise integration platform
to enable On Demand Business) and why you should invest in this technology. To discuss
Lotus Domino, we must discuss Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino as the integral building blocks
for the overall Domino solution. Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino remain today’s market leader
for the following reasons:
򐂰 The value that Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino bring to the market has not changed and is
still needed. Companies will always need to efficiently collaborate both internally and
externally with employees, suppliers, and customers to remain competitive.
򐂰 Lotus has evolved Notes and Domino with marketplace needs as new forms of
communication have emerged. Examples of this evolution can be seen in the way that we
adopted Internet standards, introduced instant messaging solutions, and embraced
support for mobile and wireless devices.
򐂰 Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino are flexible. Lotus customers have the freedom to choose
their server and client operating systems, hardware platforms, networking protocols,
directory infrastructure, programming languages, client devices, and more.

1.4 Server and client alternatives
With Domino, you can start with world-class messaging and a Web presence and then easily
add custom applications for On Demand Business. You efficiently and effectively store,
manage, and distribute information because Domino is the central access point for finding
and sharing the information that you need, whether it is located in e-mail, relational databases
or host-based systems, in your favorite desktop application or on the Internet. Various client
options offer different levels of function and access that allow you to communicate with
colleagues, collaborate in teams, and coordinate strategic business processes.
While Lotus Domino is the server software that runs on a variety of platforms including the
System i platform, Lotus Notes is the brand name for the IBM Lotus client family. Originally,
there was only one client alternative, and both the client and server products were called
Lotus Notes. As part of Lotus Notes Release 4.5, an optional capability called Domino
became available that allowed Notes applications to be extended to anyone with a Web
browser. Shortly thereafter, the server was rebranded Domino to highlight the significant Web
application server functionality and client choice. Domino became available on the IBM
AS/400® platform (early predecessor to the System i platform) with Domino Release 4.6.
Figure 1-2 shows the evolution of Domino on the AS/400, IBM eServer™ iSeries™, and

1.5 Terminology
This section explains key Domino terminology. You may find that Domino terminology and
concepts are related to, but somewhat different from, similar terms and concepts in various
operating system environments. Also, note that based on the heritage, you may occasionally
still hear the terms Notes and Domino used interchangeably from an application perspective.
򐂰 Domino document is an object that represents an individual unit of information, similar to
a database record, a row in a relational table, or a Web page. A Domino document can
contain both structured data (such as fields in a database file) and unstructured data (such
as images, voice, or rich text). It should not be confused with what we commonly consider
a document in the word processing sense.
򐂰 Domino database is a collection of documents that is usually linked by some business
purpose. For example, you may have a customer service database or a personnel policy
database. On the System i platform, a Domino database is stored as a stream file in the
i5/OS integrated file system.
In addition to serving as a container for storing information, a Domino database also
includes application logic. For example, a Domino database typically includes forms to
display and update specific documents, views to display a set of documents, and agents to
perform planned actions against documents. Changes to both application logic and data
are made available to clients and servers via replication.
򐂰 Domino application is a collection of one or more Domino databases, for example, a help
desk application or a customer relationship management (CRM) solution.
򐂰 Domino Directory is a repository for user demographic information (name, mailing
address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and so on) and location of the user’s
mail file. However, it is more than an address book. It is also a centralized server
management tool that contains information about server configuration, security, and
connections for mail routing and replication.
򐂰 Domino partitioning allows multiple Domino servers to be configured on a single i5/OS
partition, regardless of the number of CPU processors. This is different from, and totally
independent of, whether i5/OS logical partition (LPAR) support is implemented on the
server. LPAR support is the capability for the System i platform to run multiple independent
copies of i5/OS, AIX® or Linux® on the same physical system; each copy is allocated a
specific amount of memory and processor resource.
With Domino partitioning, one physical system can be logically “divided” or partitioned to
host several separate Domino Web sites or multiple Domino applications (for example,
one for mail and one for applications) within a company. This flexibility permits distributed
ownership of administration and server resources. It can also reduce the overall cost of
ownership by reducing the number of physical system required when the needs of
departments or workgroups demand individual Domino server resources.
򐂰 Domino cluster is a collection of two to six redundant Domino servers to support load
balancing of client workload, automatic failover, or both of client requestors from one
Domino server to another in the event of a server failure. It provides high availability for
your critical business applications and messaging needs. Unlike operating system or
hardware clustering, a Domino cluster can be made up of multiple partitioned servers on
the same machine. Alternatively, it may consist of multiple physical systems (with same or
different operating systems) connected with a high-speed hardware link.
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider

1.7 IBM System i offering value proposition and differentiators
In the following sections, we discuss the System i offerings value proposition and
differentiators.
1.7.1 What is the System i platform?
The IBM System i platform, the most complete and secure integrated business system, is
designed to run thousands of the world’s most popular business applications. It gives you the
opportunity to select the solution that best fits your business needs. System i solutions
provide faster, more reliable, and highly secure ways to help you simplify your IT environment
and reduce expenses.
IT environments, in many companies, are increasingly complex because of the growing
number of Wintel and UNIX® servers that are needed to support their business applications.
Executives are searching for ways to reduce the complexity of their IT environments and
reduce the costs associated them. IT simplification is a priority item for many executives.
Simplifying IT can be accomplished by:
򐂰 Reducing the number of servers needed to run the business applications, thereby
simplifying the physical makeup of the IT environment
򐂰 Reducing the number of people required to manage those servers, freeing up these
critical resources for perform other important and strategic activities
򐂰 Reducing the cost to maintain the servers and the overall IT environment, making capital
available for other business needs or allowing you to apply that capital to innovation within
the business
The System i platform is among the first in the world to run the most popular operating
systems on a single system, simultaneously. This capability enables it to run thousands of the
world’s most popular business applications, giving your company a vast number of
applications to select from without being inhibited by the operating environment the software
requires.
In addition, the System i integrated design combines the operating systems, middleware,
database, security, and storage into one system. This integrated design eliminates the seams
between all of the software layers and allows you to have one standard base for all hardware
and middleware.
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider
11
The System i platform deploys quickly, is less costly to maintain, and is easy to manage.
System i solutions also provide the highest availability and reliability of any midrange system.
Both of these characteristics reduce system management and system maintenance costs.
The System i architecture is secure and virus-resistant by design. The System i platform can
help businesses save money by avoiding multiple security patches throughout the year as
well as reducing your company’s concern over comprised company data.
The System i platform starts new and innovative applications while retaining the ability to start
core applications currently running on i5/0S. The three key aspects of the System i value
proposition are its ability to:
򐂰 Promote solutions innovation
򐂰 Simplify your IT
򐂰 Promote partnership
The System i family promotes solutions innovation with an application portfolio of 20,000
solutions offered by more than 4,500 ISVs). It is the industry’s most integrated system,
making it easy for businesses to add infrastructure and collaborative solutions (such as IBM
Workplace and Lotus Domino) to their core business processing. The System i offering
provides you the unrivaled flexibility to choose solutions that match business requirements
regardless of the operating system required by the software.
Simplifying your IT environment is an important step toward cutting administrative costs and

Figure 1-3 Evolution to System i platform
Here are ten convincing reasons to choose the System i platform as your Domino platform,
allowing you to end hardware proliferation and embrace integration:
򐂰 Reliability and availability
The System i family builds on the iSeries history of robust hardware and software
reliability. It is applications that are always available when your users need them. It is the
application subsystem architecture isolates Domino applications from each other and from
other work, which means that applications stay up and running consistently. And if a
problem occurs, i5/OS (the System i platforms operating system) automatically stops and
restarts the Domino server without affecting other activity on the server.
򐂰 Scalability
On the System i platform, you can grow your Domino workload with the same operating
system and the same skill. With the combination of advanced scalable technology and
architectural advances for Domino servers, the System i platforms are achieving
extraordinary results. For the latest Notesbench results, see the Domino for i5/OS Web
site at the following address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/domino/scalerecord.html
Although many benchmarks deliver high water mark results for large enterprise-class
servers, few accurately represent the realistic IT environments of today’s small and
midsized businesses. For this reason, IBM developed a new benchmark, called the
Three-in-One benchmark, to mirror the real-world demands that are facing these
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider
13
companies. You can find results of these benchmarks at the Three-in-One benchmark on
the Web at the following address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/hardware/threeinone/
The results of this benchmark demonstrate that, by running multiple applications on a
single IBM System i5™ platform, today’s small and midsized businesses can help to use
better the full capacity of their IT infrastructure and thereby help to increase their ROI.
Furthermore, the benchmark showed that with the platform, you can:
– Successfully run the server after initial install, without conducting expensive fine-tuning
or special customization
– Expect and typically achieve sub-second response times and predictable performance
for multiple applications running simultaneously, even during fluctuations in demand
– Dynamically and easily handle unexpected opportunities and demands without adding
or upgrading servers
Behind all these remarkable capabilities is the unique System i integrated architecture.
Some server architectures cannot efficiently manage multiple applications in this manner
and often use only a small percentage of their total capacity, forcing businesses to add
new servers as well as cost and complexity every time a business or application requires
changes. To help address this issue, the System i5 platform features subsystem
management capabilities that automatically allocate resources to applications as needed,
thereby facilitating highly efficient utilization of system resources.
As the industry’s first servers based on IBM POWER5 processors, the ninth generation of
IBM 64-bit processor technology, the System i5 platform can enable companies to
seamlessly upgrade their processing power while continuing to use their investments in
storage and networking infrastructure. The proven, open and flexible design of POWER™
processors builds on the System i platform’s tradition of integration, virtualization, and
outstanding systems management to bring new levels of functionality and simplicity to
today’s on demand world.
򐂰 Server consolidation
Scalable Domino platforms can reduce the number of servers required to support an
entire enterprise. The fewer the number of servers is, the lower the complexity and cost
are of administration and management for a messaging and collaboration solution as well
as the operating system and procedures that support it. With Domino on the System i5
platform, you can consolidate multiple physical Domino servers into one box. Furthermore,
with the System i architecture, Domino can take full advantage of all the processors in a
symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) machine. Domino servers are all “under one roof”, so
administration costs are a fraction of what is required for server farms.
In addition, with all the Domino servers on the same System i5 platform, you do not need
to replicate your relational databases and applications to other servers to make them
accessible. All the Domino servers have access to the same relational data and traditional
applications. Also, when you run multiple Domino partitions on one physical box, the
partitioned servers can communicate over an internal network, which does not add any
network traffic to your local area network (LAN).
14
Lotus Domino for i5/OS: An IBM System i Buying and Selling Guide
򐂰 Integration
Domino for i5/OS is designed to integrate with many built-in i5/OS services including
security, backup and recovery, directory, systems management, iSeries Navigator, Java
virtual machine (JVM™), and IBM DB2 Universal Database™ for iSeries. Furthermore,
the System i5 platform is the only system that allows deployment of Linux, Java, UNIX,
Microsoft Windows®, and Domino-based applications on a single server.
Domino for i5/OS applications can take advantage of direct real-time access to the DB2
Universal Database for iSeries database, with or without programming. Users can embed
the results of a DB2 Universal Database for iSeries query into a Notes document without
needing programming. Domino for i5/OS allows access to DB2 Universal Database for
iSeries from Domino application development tools and APIs. This access is direct,
without needing an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver or a middleware
communications layer when the application code runs on the server rather than the client.
򐂰 Mixed workload
With Domino partitioning and i5/OS subsystems, customers can safely and reliably run
multiple instances of Domino doing different types of Domino applications on the same
server footprint. And, on a traditional System i platform, customers can combine Domino
with other non-Domino work, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications.
򐂰 Speed to deployment
The AS/400’s reputation for speedy deployment extends to Domino. Because so much is
built-in and “pre-integrated” into the System i offering, the administrator has less work to
do when the System i platform arrives. Administrators can move quickly to the task of
delivering services to end users.
򐂰 Ease of administration
The System i offering has a “built for business” design. The capabilities an administrator
needs are integrated and consistent, which means less money is spent on people
managing servers and more time is available to deliver real value to the business.
򐂰 Lower total cost of ownership
The primary benefits of installing Domino for i5/OS include data integration, centralized
management, and solution consolidation. System i platforms with Domino offers
customers a single hardware platform to manage both their line of business applications
and their collaborative applications. Customers with a Domino implementation on i5/OS do
not need to invest in an additional hardware platform, operating system software, or skills
needed to maintain this environment. Furthermore, the ability to run Domino applications
and a Linux firewall or spam filter on the same system connected with a Gigabit Virtual
Ethernet gives you unmatched flexibility. Powerful functionality coupled with unique
integration and simplified systems management make Domino for i5/OS one of the most
cost-effective investments possible, now and in the years to come.
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider
15
Let us go a step further and look at additional reasons why the System i offering and i5/OS
create a perfect environment for running Domino:
򐂰 Isolate workload with i5/OS subsystems.
The i5/OS with its subsystem architecture allows you to run multiple Domino partitions on
a single system safely and reliably. This is unlike a typical Domino Intel® environment that
requires a separate server for each Domino server that you want to run. With the
subsystem architecture of i5/OS (as shown in Figure 1-4), you only need one system that
allows you to run each Domino server in its own partition. This allows you to start and stop
partitions independently of each other. Another advantage is that the i5/OS subsystems
isolate each Domino partition workload from being impacted by another, promoting
uninterrupted performance for the other applications.
i5/OS Subsystems = Domino Partitions (DPARs)

Figure 1-4 i5/OS subsystems isolate Domino workloads
In essences, jobs run in i5/OS subsystems that can be considered logical virtual
machines. Each has its own independent characteristics regarding the use of system
resources. Subsystems are part of the work management component of i5/OS. For
example, batch jobs typically run in a different subsystem from interactive jobs, with
different performance tuning and execution priority. In the case of Domino, starting a
Domino server involves a number of related jobs. A Domino server runs in its own
subsystem on a System i platform. If you configured multiple Domino servers on your
System i platform, each partitioned Domino server runs in its own unique subsystem,
independent of each other and of other i5/OS applications.
򐂰 Reduce administrator hassles with shared Domino copies.
The System i platform can maintain a single copy of both Domino and the operating
system. This means that all Domino partitions can share the same copy of Domino without
impacting performance. A distinct advantage to this approach is that it allows the
administrator to maintain Domino on i5/OS in the same or less time than it takes to
16
Lotus Domino for i5/OS: An IBM System i Buying and Selling Guide
maintain Domino on an Intel or UNIX server. If you have a complex IT environment with
multiple Intel or UNIX servers running Domino, the administrator is required to manage
each unique copy as upgrades and changes are needed.
Not only do you gain the advantages of using Domino partitions, your administrator has
the ability to manage and maintain a single copy of the Domino running on the system.
򐂰 Maximize the use of valuable resources across partitions and jobs.
Memory, hard disk drive, and processors are valuable resources within a system that must
be used in order to pay for themselves. With the i5/OS architecture, these resources can
be shared across partitions and by various jobs running on the system. This allows you to
use these resources as needed to improve the performance of the Domino servers and
applications running on the System i platform. In an Intel or UNIX systems environment,
these resources are completely isolated, creating potentially unused resources or over
taxed systems that do not perform effectively because they lack these resources.
򐂰 Run multiple environments and separate workloads efficiently.
The System i platforms with i5/OS technology can be used to run multiple environments
and separate workloads.
– Multi-versioning allows you to install more than one multi-version capable release of
Domino for i5/OS in a single i5/OS platform. Multi-version capable releases allow you
to install and use more than one release of Domino at the same time on the same
i5/OS partition. It is designed to provide increased flexibility for Domino for i5/OS
clients.
– While most systems have one partition, systems with logical partitioning have the
capability to run several i5/OS, AIX or Linux partitions. To enhance this capability, i5/OS
logical partitioning allows the system administrator to tune the system performance by
moving processor power as needed to a specific partition. As little as one
one-hundredth of a processor can be moved from one partition to another, allowing
discrete use of the systems processors.
򐂰 Save bandwidth in the data center.
i5/OS allows you to save bandwidth by enabling all the Domino partitions to replicate over
the virtual 1 GB Ethernet bus. By using this virtual Ethernet bus, the traffic never leaves
the system reducing input/output processing.
򐂰 Simplify hard disk drive management and maintenance.
System i5 with i5/OS treats its hard disk drive like one big drive, thanks to its single-level
storage architecture. Storage management on the System i5 platform is automated. The
System i5 platform handles selecting the physical disk drive to store the data. Storage
management automatically spreads the data across the disk arms and continues to add
records to files until specified threshold levels are reached. The System i5 platform is able
to scatter load data to many disk drives.
Single-level storage is efficient too. All data is already mapped to virtual address space,
while other systems have to do it every time they need to access the data. Regardless of
how many application programs need to use an object, only one copy of it is required to
exist. This makes the entire main storage of a System i5 platform a fast cache for disk
storage. The system can take advantage of increased memory without needing complex
management activity.
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider
17
򐂰 The i5/OS architecture is virus resistant.
Virus resistant by design, the System i offering helps save money by avoiding multiple
security patches throughout the year, as well as reduces concern about company data
security being compromised. The System i family has:
– Consistent, system-wide security covering all objects within the system
– Object-based design not susceptible to virus or tampering; for example data objects
cannot be executed
– No low-level interfaces published
Figure 1-5 shows the i5/OS object-based architecture that is virus resistant.

򐂰 Manage the System i5 platform with graphical user interface (GUI) navigation.
You can use the iSeries Navigator (a GUI) to perform user, programmer, and
administrative tasks on the System i5. iSeries Navigator has added ease of use to
leverage your users windows skills with items such as Explorer view, property sheets,
context menus, and object dragging.
This GUI application reduces the need to learn the traditional command interface by:
–
–
–
–
Making it easier to understand terminology and concepts
Providing robust graphics, not just icons
Creating wizards to help automate tasks and reduce learning and errors
Establishing a high degree of function integration, not stand-alone utilities
With the previous release of i5/OS, several key iSeries Navigator tasks are available from
a Web browser, at no additional cost. You can remotely access tasks from functional areas
such as Basic Operations, Work Management, Configuration and Service, and Database.
򐂰 Quickly respond to increased demand.
Many System i5 models come with standby Capacity on Demand (CoD) processors that
are ready to turn on additional capacity as you need it. You can turn on one or more
processors either temporarily or permanently. IBM Capacity on Demand is a fast,
18

򐂰 Organizations that are interested in reliable messaging and collaboration
Domino is high-function, integrated, flexible, world-class messaging, and collaboration.
Domino for i5/OS provides the flexibility to invest gradually and take advantage of the
range of System i platform scalability. Without changing architecture or building server
farms, you can expand from a pilot of a few dozen users to a full-blown enterprise
deployment that supports thousands of users. The System i platform can easily integrate
with Domino for i5/OS to serve your business needs, on a hardware platform with high
reliability.
Chapter 1. Getting started: Key questions to consider
19
򐂰 Organizations that are interested in secure and reliable Web serving with integrated
content management
Domino provides many Web-enabling functions that you need in a single integrated
package. The System i platform provides a scalable, reliable Web server. Both i5/OS and
Domino provide integrated security to help protect the privacy and integrity of information.
They provide authentication of users and access control to ensure that only authorized
users can work with information and programs. Domino for i5/OS takes advantage of the
security characteristics of both platforms. i5/OS security provides an additional layer of
protection over and above Domino security to control access to line of business data.
򐂰 Organizations that are interested in reliable, scalable, secure, and affordable On Demand
Business
To be successful at On Demand Business, with either B2B or business to consumer
(B2C), you must respond in real time at any time. Domino for i5/OS has the power and the
tools to help you succeed in this demanding environment. The System i platform provides
reliability and scalability, which are essential in the dynamic and often unpredictable world
of On Demand Business. Domino for i5/OS makes it easy to integrate business data in
DB2 Universal Database for iSeries databases with the Web-enabled applications that you
build with Domino Designer. You can provide your Web visitors with up-to-the-minute
information and process their requests immediately. With Domino for i5/OS security, you
can help protect the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information that flows to and
from your site.
򐂰 Lotus Notes and Domino customers who are interested in server consolidation or
upgrading from Domino 6 or 6.5 to Domino 7
Consolidation of any type reduces system administration, including network management
and system backups. Domino for i5/OS provides even greater savings, thanks to the
System i family’s long tradition of ease of management. System administration functions
are integrated into i5/OS and share a common interface. The System i platform
consistently rates among the best (lowest cost) in TCO studies.
Domino for i5/OS supports multiple (partitioned) Domino servers on the same hardware,
with the potential to support many thousands of users. This gives you the flexibility either
to combine servers or to keep your existing server identities while consolidating hardware.
And, because each partitioned Domino server is logically independent, you can use
standard i5/OS work management capabilities to tune the performance characteristics of
each server. Each is also logically insulated from the others.
The consolidation solution is also applicable to small and midsized businesses that may
only have one Domino server but want to locate it in a partition next to their other System i
line of business applications on a single server footprint. The independent report,
Consolidation, Expansion, or Both? Measuring IBM eServer iSeries Business Value for
SMBs (August 2003) by Sageza, on consolidating to an iSeries server, highlights the
benefits of consolidating to an iSeries server for small and midsized businesses. You can
find this report on the Web at the following address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/conslt/pdf/sageza.pdf
The System i platform builds upon the iSeries reputation for reliability. For System i
customers, performing an initial program load is a rare event, and usually a scheduled
event. Internally at IBM, we are consolidating Domino servers using scalable IBM
platforms. The System i family is a major participant in our consolidation efforts.
򐂰 Organizations that are interested in extending the reach of existing applications to include
DB2 Universal Database for iSeries data or other Lotus software such as IBM Lotus
Sametime or IBM Lotus QuickPlace
Domino provides rapid application development tools to help you design and develop
collaborative applications for your users that can be extended to the Internet. There are a
20

variety of options to easily integrate your existing DB2 Universal Database for iSeries data
into these applications, with or without programming. A customer service application can
access an existing DB2 Universal Database for iSeries customer master file for
information such as name, address, and phone number.
DB2 Universal Database for iSeries integration works both ways. A collections application
running on a System i platform may update your Domino customer service database to
alert your customer service representatives to any outstanding accounts receivable
issues. With Domino for i5/OS, you can tackle many business problems that require
organizing unstructured data or managing the flow of information. At the same time, you
can link this workflow and unstructured information to the wealth of business data in your
DB2 Universal Database for iSeries databases.
IBM Lotus Sametime delivers market-leading capabilities for bringing together
geographically dispersed teams, resulting in increased productivity. These capabilities can
also be integrated with applications including e-mail, team workplaces, portals, and Web

Notes C++ API to create a variety of applications. You can write programs that transfer
information between Notes and non-Notes databases, and you can create Notes
databases that are a combination of existing databases.
򐂰 Lotus C API Toolkit for Domino provides a comprehensive C programming language
interface to Lotus Domino. It gives C developers access to most of the operations available
through the Notes client as well as many features specific to the Domino server.
For additional information about Domino developer’s tools, see the Domino for i5/OS Web
page at the following address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/domino/domdevtools.html
2.4 Backup and recovery solutions
The System i platform allows almost any of today’s technologies to run. Your implementation
of this platform can be a Domino dedicated environment or it can run other technologies, such
as WebSphere and Linux, that are used for daily business. It is necessary to consider all of
this when planning for the backup and recovery needs of your IT environment.
System i architects and administrators have a large variety of options when looking at where
to keep saved objects. These options include using magnetic tape, optical media, or a save
file. Also, more options exist outside of the System i environment when incorporating a
networked environment.
Software tools are available such as Backup Recovery and Media Services (BRMS) and IBM
Tivoli® Storage Manager. These tools can help to implement a sound backup and recovery
strategy.
38
Lotus Domino for i5/OS: An IBM System i Buying and Selling Guide
Keep in mind that, when planning and implementing your strategy, the Domino for i5/OS
objects are created throughout the i5/OS integrated file system. Domino databases and
programs are spread across all System i disk units, along with other System i objects. i5/OS
automatically manages the allocation of disk space so that you do not have to decide which
databases to store on a particular disk drive. You have to formulate a strategy for logical
backup, instead of a physical one by disk unit.
2.4.1 Backup Recovery and Media Services
BRMS helps you to implement a disciplined approach to managing your backups and
provides you with an orderly way to retrieve lost or damaged data. Using BRMS, you can
manage your most critical and complex backups, including online backups of Domino servers.
You can also recover your system fully in the event of a disaster or failure.
BRMS supports online backups of Domino databases. An online backup is a backup that you
do while your Lotus servers are in use. There are no save-while-active synchronization points.
Both the BRMS graphical user interface (GUI) client and BRMS green screen can save to
virtual tape devices (new in V5R4), tape media library, stand-alone tape devices, a Tivoli
Storage Manager server, and save files.
BRMS offers the following benefits:
򐂰 Lotus server online backup
BRMS provides true online backup support for Lotus Servers such as Domino and
QuickPlace. These servers can be saved while they are in use with no save-while-active
synchronization points.
BRMS has been enhanced to provide incremental backup and point-in-time restore of
Lotus server databases.
򐂰 System recovery reports
BRMS recovery provides for the orderly retrieval of lost or damaged data by providing
comprehensive reports that take you step-by-step through the recovery of your entire
system.
򐂰 Media management
BRMS enables you to keep an inventory of your media and track everything that is on
them. When you perform a backup, BRMS lets you know which tapes to use, so you do not
have to worry about writing over active data. If you are using a tape media library, BRMS
automatically handles tape processing for you during the backup and recovery process.
򐂰 Robust GUI
Both BRMS and iSeries Navigator Backup have iSeries Navigator interfaces. If you have
BRMS installed, the iSeries Navigator Backup interface is not available to you. The BRMS
interface provides more robust features and control over your backups.
򐂰 Native TCP/IP networking
By placing multiple System i models in a BRMS network, you can share BRMS policies,
media information, and storage locations across the network group. This allows you to
manage backups across all of your systems in a consistent manner. It also optimizes the
use of your media.
򐂰 GUI support
BRMS now supports graphical operations by providing an optional plug-in to iSeries
Navigator.
Chapter 2. Lotus and related products for the System i offering
39
򐂰 BRMS application client to Total Storage Manager
The BRMS Application Client to Total Storage Manager allows BRMS users to perform
save and restore operations using Tivoli Storage Manager servers as the storage medium.
The BRMS Application Client has the look and feel of BRMS and a System i platform. It is
not a Tivoli Storage Manager Backup or Archive client. There is little difference in the way
that BRMS saves objects to Tivoli Storage Manager servers and the way it saves objects
to media. A Tivoli Storage Manager server is just another device that BRMS uses for your
save and restore operations.
򐂰 Support for parallel saves
Reduce your backup window by taking advantage of the parallel save (and restore)
support in BRMS.
򐂰 Tailored backups
BRMS comes with several standard backup policies that cover the basics. Its real value is
that it allows you to create detailed policies that are tailored to your specific backup needs.
You can select the pieces that you want to back up, even from the integrated file system.
With Operational Assistant and iSeries Navigator Backup, you have to choose all of the
integrated file system or none of it.
Also, IBM has various BRMS partners. To learn more about these partners and BRMS for
System i, go to the BRMS Web page at the following address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/service/brms/
2.4.2 Tivoli software
Two solutions from Tivoli software from IBM extend the systems management capabilities of
Domino:
򐂰 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail
򐂰 IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Messaging and Collaboration
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail is a software module for IBM Tivoli Storage Manager that
automates the data protection of e-mail servers running either Lotus Domino or Microsoft
Exchange. In fact, this software module for Tivoli Storage Manager was formerly known as
Tivoli Data Protection for Lotus Domino. This module uses the APIs provided by e-mail
application vendors to perform online “hot” backups without shutting down the e-mail server
and to improve data-restore performance. As a result, it can help protect the growing amount
of new and changing data that should be securely backed up to help maintain 24x365
application availability.
For Domino databases, this module exploits the transaction logging feature of Domino,
enabling the capture of just the database changes for logged databases. Thus, full database
backups are required less frequently.
For more information about IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail, refer to the following Web
address:
http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/storage-mgr-mail/
IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Messaging and Collaboration v5.1.0 is designed to provide rapid
time-to-value through the deployment of best practices Resource Models to monitor and
address problems that arise in a messaging and collaboration environment. This new
packaging of Tivoli software products incorporates IBM Tivoli Management Solution for
Domino Release 3.2, which supports the System i platform. Using this tool, administrators
can proactively manage Domino service levels in real time. It features a GUI with a Lotus
Notes look and feel, an auto-discovery function that searches and discovers all Domino

servers within the Domino Directory, and advanced probing technology for Notes client
performance and for the automation of Domino server monitoring and problem resolution.
IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Messaging and Collaboration is easy to install and configure.
Integration with the Tivoli Health Console provides a real-time GUI for enterprise
management. Integration with the Tivoli Enterprise™ Data Warehouse provides
enterprise-wide access to data for historical and trending analysis, reporting, and graphing.

2.5 Web (HTTP) server alternatives
When people think of On Demand Business, some think of Web servers for publishing
information via the Internet, others consider full-blown e-commerce, and still others want
something in between. For example, they want to extend the reach of their applications to
Web browser users on intranets, extranets, or the Internet. Several IBM software products
(Lotus and other brands) address this wide range of needs with some functional overlap, and
positioning is important. This section compares Domino to other alternatives as a Hypertext
Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server.
IBM Web server technology for System i platforms is currently available through:
򐂰 Domino for i5/OS HTTP
򐂰 IBM HTTP Server for i5/OS (includes the IBM HTTP Server (powered by Apache))
Multiple Web servers such as, Domino HTTP and IBM HTTP Server for i5/OS, can coexist on
the same System i platform by configuring different port numbers or different IP addresses.
2.5.1 Domino for i5/OS HTTP
For a complete Internet application development environment that includes forms generation,
document management, e-mail, workflow, and collaboration services, Domino for i5/OS is the
answer. Domino for i5/OS includes this functionality along with a built-in HTTP server.
The Domino server includes HTTP server technology that transforms Domino into a Web
applications server. In general, you set up and use a Domino Web server on i5/OS in the
same way that you do for a Domino Web server on any other platform.
The Web server in Domino for i5/OS is derived from the same code base as the IBM HTTP
Server for i5/OS and has most of the same capabilities. RPG, COBOL, C, and CL programs
that are specifically written as Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs are called from
Net.Data.
2.5.2 IBM HTTP Server for i5/OS
As an alternative to using the HTTP server provided in Domino, customers can take
advantage of the HTTP Server for i5/OS to forward HTTP traffic to their Domino 6 and 7
servers. With HTTP Server for i5/OS, you have everything you need to quickly and easily
establish a Web presence and get started on the road to working the Web for business. HTTP
Server for i5/OS includes the IBM HTTP Server (powered by Apache).
Chapter 2. Lotus and related products for the System i offering
41
Why should you use IBM HTTP Server (powered by Apache) with Domino?
򐂰 It provides a single point of entry for all HTTP traffic, including WebSphere and Domino.
򐂰 It allows you to easily control how Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) are distributed to
your application servers using a configuration file.
򐂰 You can use the WEBADMIN.NSF database via the Web to perform administrative tasks.
򐂰 It has the availability of several additional features such as the enhanced Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL) and Highly Available HTTP Server.
Apache, a freeware HTTP server, is open-source software that implements the industry
standard HTTP/1.1 protocol with a focus on being highly configurable and easily extendible. It
is built and distributed under the Apache Software License by the Apache Software
Foundation.

Requirements
In this chapter, we discuss the hardware, software, and network requirements for running
Domino on the System i platform. We also show you where you can obtain sizing and
performance information.

45
3.1 Hardware requirements
From an System i perspective, Domino is a modern or new workload environment. A typical
Domino application has different performance characteristics than a typical 5250 application.
Domino applications tend to require more processing power (MHz) and memory. They also
tend to be less input/output (I/O) intensive than 5250 applications.
Domino applications can vary widely in their performance demands, as other applications can
vary. Heavy Domino applications (such as complex database queries, full text indexing, or
e-mail users with very large mail files) require high processor speed and L2 cache. This is
true for Intel processor-based servers as it is for System i platforms. Lighter applications, such
as a simple mail workload, may perform acceptably on a smaller System i platform.
As you evaluate your hardware options for Domino for i5/OS, keep in mind that the
Commercial Processing Workload (CPW) rating for a server is usually not a valid
measurement for Domino. We provide estimated Mail and Calendaring User measurements,
which are a better indicator of the server’s capacity for running Domino workloads.
3.1.1 System i memory and disk requirements for Domino 7
Memory and disk requirements may vary by Domino or i5/OS release. Guidelines are
documented in the Release Notes for each Domino release. They are available online at the
Lotus Documentation Web site at the following address:
http://www.lotus.com/ldd/doc
The following System i platform memory and disk space requirements are based on results
from test environments. Use these values as general guidelines for minimum memory and
disk space. The requirements for your environment may be different.
򐂰 288 MB minimum base memory; 512 MB recommended
򐂰 1.6 GB minimum free disk space; 2 GB recommended
򐂰 At a minimum, two disk arms (recommended) for best performance
Although a Domino server can run on any IBM PowerPC® model, the System i models are
optimized for client/server applications such as Domino.
For sizing assistance, use the IBM Systems Workload Estimator tool at the following Web
address as well as the other resources outlined in 3.2, “Sizing and performance information”
on page 48:
http://www-912.ibm.com/supporthome.nsf/document/16533356
3.1.2 Administration workstation requirements
A Win32® workstation with a TCP/IP connection to the System i platform is required to
administer a Domino for i5/OS server. Administration can be performed with a Web browser, a
Domino Administrator client (alone or in conjunction with iSeries Navigator), or the
Java-based Domino Console. For required memory, disk space, and other specifications,
consult the Domino Release Notes available online at the Lotus Documentation Web site at
the following address:

3.2 Sizing and performance information
The IBM Systems Workload Estimator is a Web-based sizing tool for IBM System i5, IBM
System p5™, and IBM System x™. You can use this tool to size a new system, to size an
upgrade to an existing system, or to size a consolidation of several systems. The Workload
Estimator allows measurement input to best reflect your current workload and provides a
variety of built-in workloads to reflect your emerging application requirements. Virtualization
can be used to yield a more robust solution. The Workload Estimator provides current and
growth recommendations for processor, memory, and disk that satisfy the overall client
performance requirements.
For more details, refer to the IBM Systems Workload Estimator Web site at the following
address:
http://www-912.ibm.com/supporthome.nsf/document/16533356
The following IBM Redbooks and Redpaper provide excellent sources for performance
monitoring and tuning. They also explain what you need to consider when sizing a Domino
environment:

In addition, you can refer to performance tuning white papers and other references on the
Web at the following address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/hardware/threeinone/
Several tools are available to help with capacity planning on System i platforms. Some of
these tools include:
򐂰 Server.Load
This tool is available with Domino. It allows Domino customers to run a simulated workload
to obtain server capacity and response metrics. Customers can analyze the capacity of
their own servers and evaluate the requirements for additional CPU, memory, or disk
storage upgrades.
Server.Load is a capacity-planning tool that you use to run tests, also called scripts and
workloads, against a targeted Domino server to measure server capacity and response
metrics.
Using Server.Load, you have real-time control of the test environment and variables. Prior
to running a test, you can change test parameters, stop conditions, and existing script
variables. You can also monitor real-time server metrics. While the script is running, the
Metrics window displays an immediate characterization of server performance by updating
metrics on a per-minute basis.
򐂰 IBM Performance Management for System i5
Your IBM System i platform can be one of your company’s most valued assets. But it is an
absolute requirement that you understand and manage the growth and performance of
your system to ensure that you are keeping pace with the changing demands of your
business.
That is where IBM Performance Management for System i5 fits in. This i5/OS integrated,
easy to use, yet powerful tool easily provides you with critical information about your
system’s current utilization characteristics plus helps provide insight about where you are
headed, the additional capability that your system has, and the upgrades that you might
need for that next application.
Whether you are interested in server consolidation, adding a middleware application such
as WebSphere or Domino, or implementing a multi-partition, multi-operating system
environment, Performance Management for System i5 can be of great assistance.
For more information about Performance Management for System i5, refer to the following
Web address:
http://www.ibm.com/systems/i/pmsystemi5/
Although many benchmarks deliver valuable information about the high watermark
capabilities of server platforms that are finely-tuned to run a single application, few
benchmarks accurately represent the realistic IT environments of today’s small and medium
businesses. For this reason, IBM developed a new benchmark, the Three-in-One benchmark,
to mirror the real-world requirements and demands facing these companies. For more
information about the Three-in-One benchmark, see the following Web address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/hardware/threeinone/
As the industry’s first servers based on IBM POWER5 processors, the ninth generation of
IBM 64-bit processor technology, System i5 platforms can enable companies to seamlessly
upgrade their processing power while continuing to use their investments in storage and
networking infrastructure. The proven, open, and flexible design of POWER processors builds
on the system’s tradition of integration, virtualization, and outstanding systems management
to bring new levels of functionality and simplicity to today’s on demand world.

4.1 Ordering and packaging
The Lotus Domino server product is available on CD-ROM. (Domino 6 and 7 for i5/OS is
contained on two physical CDs.) You receive separate media for the “core platforms” of
Windows, UNIX, i5/OS, and Linux for Intel. The Domino product is also available for download
in the form of an electronic service delivery Web image. A Domino for i5/OS license includes
the base Domino server and facilities to support integration with i5/OS services. A Lotus
Notes client CD is included in the media pack. Entitlement to use the Domino Administrator
client on the Lotus Notes CD is provided with a server license of Domino for i5/OS. If you
decide to use the provided client CD for production mail, application access, or application
development, you must pay for the appropriate client license.
The following optional Lotus Domino extended products are available. They are typically
packaged and ordered separately, unless part of a special software bundle. See Chapter 2,
“Lotus and related products for the System i offering” on page 23, for more information about

4.2 Domino server licensing
IBM Lotus Domino is the server software that runs on a variety of operating systems,
available through various licensing options and offerings. Three Lotus Domino Server license
types are available to organizations of all sizes:
򐂰 IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server (messaging only)
򐂰 IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server (applications only)
򐂰 IBM Lotus Domino Enterprise Server (both messaging and applications)
Lotus Domino Express offerings, available to small and midsized businesses, are packaged
and priced to provide cost-effective functionality with simplified licensing and reduced
administration requirements. License restrictions remove selected Lotus Domino elements
and attributes that are designed for larger enterprises. Otherwise, the capabilities of Lotus
Domino server software and the server component of the Lotus Domino Express offerings are
the same. The three IBM Lotus Domino Express offerings include:
򐂰 IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Express (messaging only)
򐂰 IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server Express (applications only)
򐂰 IBM Lotus Domino Collaboration Express (messaging and applications)
IBM Lotus Notes is workstation (client) software that provides an individual user with an
integrated collaborative environment. Lotus Notes is one of several client options for users to
access the messaging and collaboration capabilities of the Lotus Domino server software.
On 25 July 2006, IBM announced the replacement of its Per Processor licensing structure
with the Processor Value Unit licensing structure. This change impacts all IBM middleware
products available on Passport Advantage Online that use this metric.
A processor value unit is simply a unit of measure used to differentiate licensing of
middleware on processors and, over time, will evolve to differentiate processor families based
on their relative performance. Initially, however, our focus is to convert customers to processor
value units without disrupting their current plans and budgets.
Going forward, IBM middleware, formerly licensed using the per processor metric will now be
licensed in processor value units. We have created three broad tiers or levels, and all existing
processors have been assigned to one of those tiers. For each product, customers need to
acquire the appropriate number of processor value units for the level or tier of the specific
processor on which the software is deployed.
To better understand process value unit licensing, contact your Lotus Domino representative.
4.3 Software Maintenance
Since February 2003, Software Maintenance is available for all IBM licensed program product
(LPPs) that run on System i platforms and to selected software acquired through Passport
Advantage (see 4.4, “IBM Passport Advantage offerings” on page 56). Software Maintenance
combines Software Subscription and Technical Support, previously acquired as separate
entities. Software Subscription provides upgrades for software licenses at no additional cost
within the designated coverage period. IBM Technical Support supplements your Information
Chapter 4. Sales support
55
Systems staff by providing telephone and electronic cross-platform support for short duration
installation issues, usage (how-to) questions, and code problems.
Software ordered through Passport Advantage includes Software Maintenance with new
licenses. Software Maintenance for Lotus software acquired through Passport Advantage
provides upgrades for software licenses at no additional cost within a specific time period.
This includes automatic periodic fix packs to provide fixes to reported defects, to provide
functional enhancements, or to provide both. It also includes the right to transfer a license
from one operating system platform to another.
The Fix Lists provide information about Software Problem Reports (SPRs) and Authorized
Program Analysis Reports (APARs) that have been reported by customers. Each Lotus
Software product reports Fix Lists using different methods. These lists may show customer
reported defects that were fixed in current releases and may also show planned fixes in future
releases.
The Notes and Domino Fix List lists SPRs for Maintenance Releases (MRs) and Maintenance
Updates (MUs). This Fix List contains information for Notes and Domino APIs and utilities,
Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook, Domino Web Access (formerly iNotes™ Web Access),
and Lotus Enterprise Integration.
The Lotus software update process uses the developerWorks® Lotus Web site to announce
availability of fixes and allow downloads with associated installation instructions. The
developerWorks Lotus Web site is located at the following address:

4.5.3 IBM Lotus Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook
IBM Lotus Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook delivers the leading messaging, calendar
and scheduling, and personal information management services of Lotus Domino to
Microsoft Outlook users. Organizations currently using Microsoft Exchange for their
messaging infrastructure can move to security-rich, scalable and reliable IBM Lotus Domino
server software, without changing from familiar client software on the desktop and without
user retraining. It lets organizations take advantage of Lotus Domino server functionality
using Internet e-mail standards, including Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP),
iCalendar, and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
You can increase the reliability, scalability and security of your messaging infrastructure by
migrating from Microsoft Exchange to Lotus Domino, while retaining the familiar Microsoft
Outlook end-user experience. Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook also supports S/MIME,

4.5.4 IBM Lotus Domino WebMail
With IBM Lotus Domino WebMail, you can provide a low-cost, standards-based messaging
solution to focused communities of employees who typically have limited access to company
electronic communications. Lotus Domino WebMail is one of the client options for accessing
IBM Lotus Domino messaging capabilities.
Now you can provide security-rich, user-friendly e-mail, calendar, and to-do functions to
occasional Web browser users, helping increase efficient communications. And the simple
user interface enables employees to start using Lotus Domino WebMail quickly, with little or
no training. Lotus Domino WebMail also provides access to basic, low-function mail
functionality from Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) or IMAP client software.
Domino WebMail provides these benefits:
򐂰 Provides basic browser-based Lotus Domino e-mail access to more users to help increase
productivity
򐂰 Helps users easily navigate e-mail and calendar features within a user-friendly interface
򐂰 Helps reduce your TCO with a low cost for each license
򐂰 Uses your existing Lotus Domino infrastructure to help leverage IT investments and
administrator skills

If you want an affordable mail solution to electronically communicate information with your
user community and feel that other solutions, such as Lotus Notes or Domino Web Access,
have more functionality than your users require, consider Domino WebMail.
For more information about Domino WebMail, refer to the following Web address:

4.5.5 IBM Lotus Notes client pricing
Users of authenticated Domino applications must be licensed to access Domino, regardless
of client type or whether IBM Lotus client software is installed on the workstation.
Authentication is involved whenever the application requires secure validation of a user’s
unique identity. The pricing strategy is based on a concept known as client access license,
which provides the user the right to connect and interact with an IBM Lotus Domino Server.
You must acquire at least one of the client access license for each user with a unique Notes,
Domino Web Access, or WebMail ID that is issued by, or on behalf of, your enterprise.
There are three options for client entitlement of Lotus Notes for Messaging and Lotus Notes
for Collaboration:
򐂰 Access the IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server or IBM Lotus Domino Enterprise Server
via IBM Lotus Notes in order to use applications based on one of the templates, which are
included in or packaged with IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server or IBM Lotus Domino
Enterprise Server. The templates are Messaging/Calendar & Scheduling, Personal
Directory, Personal Journal, and Discussion and Document Libraries.
򐂰 Use IBM Lotus Instant Messaging Limited Use solely and exclusively to support the
integrated presence awareness and instant messaging functionality and the Chat Logging
Service Provider Interface within the program environment.
򐂰 Use all rights are granted under IBM Lotus Domino Web Access for Messaging.
Actual prices for Lotus client software vary by reseller and Passport Advantage discount level.
Lotus software volume pricing is based on ordering a license (the right to a copy of the
software), as opposed to providing a shrink-wrapped package of media and documentation
for every license needed. Media and documentation are generally ordered and priced
separately. Consult your Lotus software representative or Business Partner for information
about special options to trade up from Microsoft Exchange or Novell Groupwise client access
licenses.

򐂰 Question: What is special about the implementation of Domino for i5/OS?
Answer: With Domino for i5/OS, IBM combines the System i value proposition of
integration, ease-of-use, availability, reliability, and scalability with this outstanding
messaging and collaboration software offering. Domino for i5/OS is designed to integrate
with many built-in i5/OS services including security, backup and recovery, directory,
systems management, iSeries Navigator, Java virtual machine (JVM), and IBM DB2
Universal Database for iSeries.
Domino for i5/OS applications can take advantage of direct real-time access to DB2
Universal Database for iSeries, with or without programming. On System i platforms, Open
Database Connectivity (ODBC) drivers and additional middleware communications layers
are unnecessary when the application code runs on the server rather than the client.
Domino for i5/OS Version 7 delivers additional platform-specific integration. The IBM
HTTP Server (powered by Apache), available with i5/OS, can be used as an alternative
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server for Domino.
򐂰 Question: What considerations are involved in choosing a System i platform versus an
Intel processor-based environment for Domino?
Answer: A typical Domino environment consists of multiple Domino servers.
Implementing on Intel processor-based hardware most likely requires more than one
physical server. Since a small System i5 model can be used to host multiple Domino
servers on the same hardware, it can be implemented at a price comparable to an Intel
processor-based server environment. When selecting a hardware platform, even for a
single Domino server, you must consider other workloads such as for a line of business
application or Linux, AIX or Windows integration. Consolidating on a single server
footprint, provided by the System i platform, offers a more rapid return on investment (ROI)
and a lower total cost of ownership.
Compared to other platforms, another strength of the System i family is to deliver
consistent response time for multiple Domino applications running simultaneously.
Processor, memory, and input/output (I/O) resources are effectively prioritized, managed,
and shared among multiple Domino partitions, maximizing the use of available computing
resources to support Domino workloads. A properly configured System i platform
maintains consistent response time as the number of users increases.
Data integration and centralized management are two of the primary benefits of installing
Domino for i5/OS. The System i platform is also an excellent choice for server
consolidation.
IDC published the paper The ROI of Windows and Linux Server Consolidation on IBM
eServer iSeries: Analysis and Case Studies of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses
about server consolidation in small and medium businesses. IDC found strong ROI and
availability improvements by deploying Windows and Linux servers on the iSeries server
(a member of the System i offering). The report analyzed six customers (from North
America, Europe, and Asia Pacific) running Linux on iSeries in logical partitions or running
Windows on iSeries via integration of the xSeries server. The IDC study was
commissioned by IBM. You can find this report on the Web at the following address:
http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/conslt/idc_roi/
򐂰 Question: What is the difference between Lotus Domino and Lotus Notes?
Answer: Domino is the server software that runs on a variety of platforms including
System i products. Lotus Notes is the brand name for the full-function IBM Lotus client
family. Originally, there was only one client alternative, and both the client and server
products were called Lotus Notes. As part of Lotus Notes Release 4.5, an optional
capability called Domino became available that allowed Notes applications to be extended
to anyone with a Web browser. Shortly thereafter, the server was rebranded as Domino to
highlight the significant Web application server functionality and client choice. Domino
78
Lotus Domino for i5/OS: An IBM System i Buying and Selling Guide
became available on the AS/400 platform (the predecessor to iSeries and System i
products) with Domino Release 4.6.
򐂰 Question: What national languages does Domino for i5/OS support?
Answer: In Lotus Domino, there is no server language pack for Arabic, Czech, Greek,
Hebrew, Hungarian, Polish, Iberian Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish (Group 2b
languages) nor for Thai, Slovenian, Catalan (Group 3 languages) on non-Windows
platforms. Customers can copy the language elements from Windows to non-Windows
platforms to set up a language server for these languages.
Domino for i5/OS supports Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Spanish,
Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian,
Swedish, and Finnish.
You can find the instructions to copy unsupported languages from a Windows platform to a
non-Windows platform in a Technote at the following Web address:
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21235982
򐂰 Question: Can I run more than one language of Domino for i5/OS on a System i platform?
Answer: Yes, you can deploy more than one language on a Domino server or have
Domino servers with differing languages through the use of a language pack and
multilingual database support. To deploy Domino in a language other than English, you
must first install and configure the English version of Domino and then add the translated
language objects from the Language Pack CD-ROM or Web kit.
򐂰 Question: What is the advantage to Domino partitioning?
Answer: Domino server partitioning lets you run multiple Domino servers in a single i5/OS
partition. You can configure up to 99 Domino partitions in a single i5/OS partition.
Using partitioned servers reduces hardware expenses and minimizes the number of
systems you have to administer. Each partitioned server has its own Domino data
directory and NOTES.INI file, but all partitioned servers share the same Domino program
files. Partitioned servers can help you make more efficient use of your system. For
example, instead of purchasing multiple small systems to run Domino servers that might
not take advantage of the resources available to them, you can purchase a single, more
powerful system and run multiple Domino servers on that system, allowing you to easily
allocate resources among the Domino servers running on that system.
Setting up partitioned servers is particularly effective when the servers are in different
domains. For example, on one system, you can dedicate multiple domains to multiple
customers or set up multiple Web sites.
In an enterprise network, partitioned servers can provide the scalability that you need
while also providing security. As your system grows, you can migrate users from individual
servers to partitioned servers. A partitioned server can also be a member of a cluster if
you require high availability of databases. Security for a partitioned server is the same as
for a server on its own system.
If one partitioned server shuts down, the others continue to run. Therefore, the
applications you run on the other partitioned servers are more reliable. If a partitioned
server encounters a fatal error, you can restart that partitioned server without restarting
your system or other Domino servers.
򐂰 Question: Can I run Domino 6 and Domino 7 on the same i5/OS server?
Answer: Yes, beginning with Domino 6.0.3 and 6.5.0, every Domino release is now
multi-version capable and is installed into its own unique library and directory. For more
information, refer to the IBM Redbook Lotus Domino 6 Multi-Versioning Support on the
IBM eServer iSeries Server, SG24-6940.
Chapter 6. Frequently asked questions
79
򐂰 Question: What is Domino for i5/OS multi-versioning support?
Answer: With the 6.0.3 and 6.5.0 releases of Domino, IBM introduced multi-version
capabilities for Domino on the i5/OS platform. Previous implementations of multiple
Domino releases on one system required separate logical partitions (LPARs), which is not
always a viable solution for some users. Starting with 6.0.3 and 6.5.0, Domino for i5/OS
supports multiple releases of Domino on the same LPAR.
This added capability is designed to allow increased flexibility for Domino for i5/OS
customers. You can now run different Domino instances or Domino partitions on different
release levels of Domino in one partition. One significant advantage of this capability is
that you do not have to end servers of one release in order to install another release.
Since the existing servers that are configured to use one release are not automatically
updated when installing a different release, these servers can remain active. This provides
a useful environment for running production servers on one release and testing new
servers and applications on another release without impacting each other. Operating in
this mixed environment can help increase the stability of both testing and production
environments.
Installing and using multiple versions of Domino on one partition is optional. You can still
operate in a single version environment, but there might be some action you must take to
ensure that your environment works with these multi-version enabled releases.
򐂰 Question: What communications and connectivity protocols are supported?
Answer: TCP/IP is the supported protocol with Domino for i5/OS. TCP/IP Connectivity
Utilities (5722-TC1), which comes with i5/OS, must be configured appropriately.
򐂰 Question: If TCP/IP is the only supported connection, how are switched line connections
handled?
Answer: TCP/IP is the supported communications protocol. Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)
can be used for dial-up access from client to server. Windows clients, for example, already
have the IP Dial-up Networking capability built into the operating system, and Notes can
take advantage of it. Notes users can schedule or manually initiate a dial-up connection to
a Domino for i5/OS server. Another alternative is to dial in to a router.
The server can be configured to automatically dial out for replication using PPP as well.
For example, you have a network of System i platforms nationwide in branch offices and
you need to replicate with them over dial-up lines. Automatic dial via PPP allows you to do
that. The configuration of this support is similar to remote local area network (LAN) service
configuration on other Domino platforms.
򐂰 Question: How are Domino programs and databases stored in the i5/OS environment?
Answer: Domino databases are stored as stream files in the i5/OS integrated file system.
Domino for i5/OS executable programs are stored in the library file system (QSYS.LIB file
system) in the QDOMINOxxx and QNOTES libraries.
򐂰 Question: What Lotus Domino extended products are available for i5/OS?
Answer: Many separately purchased Lotus products extend the capabilities of Domino.
The following extended products are currently available on the System i platform:
–
–
–
–
–
IBM Lotus Sametime
IBM Lotus QuickPlace
IBM Lotus Enterprise Integrator

server type. Networking a System i platform with another server may be the optimum
solution for needs that require extended products that are not available natively for the
i5/OS operating system.
For additional information about the Lotus Domino extended products for i5/OS, see 2.1,
“Lotus Domino extended products” on page 24.
򐂰 Question: What is the difference between multi-lingual support and multi-versioning
support?
Answer: Multi-lingual support means that, for a specific version of Domino, you can run
multiple languages by using language packs and the multi-lingual database support.
Multi-lingual support can be applied to one or more of the Domino servers of that version.
Multi-version support is when more than one version of Domino is used in an i5/OS
partition.
򐂰 Question: How does an i5/OS release upgrade impact my Domino instances?
Answer: An i5/OS release upgrade should not impact your Domino instances, as long as
your existing i5/OS release is supported. IBM performs i5/OS update testing of supported
i5/OS releases as part of the test plan.
