Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and
technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or
allusions to other texts.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.8.5
Analyze in detail the structure of a specific paragraph in a text, including the role of particular sentences in
developing and refining a key concept.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.8.6
Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds
to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.
Ongoing Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.8.10
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction at the high end of the grades 6-8 text complexity band
independently and proficiently.

Monday- I can determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.
Students will:
Review vocabulary terms
Ask any questions from previous lesson
Complete independent practice for Unit 3 lesson 10
Go to library for checkouts
Tuesday – I can analyze the author’s use of allusion and analogy in the text.
Students will:
Begin Unit 3 Lesson 11
Students will work on developing a driving question for a research project.
Wednesday – I can develop a topic and a driving question for a research paper.
Students Will:
Go to the computer lab to read about a topic that is of interest to them. Students will determine a topic about which to
research and write as well as develop a driving question for the research.
Thursday – I can conduct research for my paper online.
Students will:
Go to the computer lab to research writing topic.
