Editorial guidelines
Length: Half page articles are 375 words and whole page, 750 words.
We can sometimes accommodate longer items on request.
Submission: Please email contributions to: policy@ukhca.co.uk
We will acknowledge safe receipt.
Format: Microsoft Word or plain text (not Microsoft Publisher).
Photographs: Photographs of the contributor or to illustrate the
article are much appreciated. Please submit by e-mail as a separate
electronic file; high resolution image, minimum 300 dpi. The
contributor should check they have copyright permission to publish.
Graphics: Graphics can add variety and interest to an article. Please
discuss ideas for graphics with us.
House style: Appropriate to a professional readership, plain English
and avoiding slang or advertising language. For advertising
opportunities in Homecarer, please contact Sarah King 020 8661 8181.
Author’s own work: Please give the author’s name, job title,
organisation and website/e-mail address for inclusion at the end of the
article. (We also allow UKHCA members and others by agreement to
include one line to describe their services, in a factual and nonadvertorial way.) The article must be the author’s own work, or sources
correctly attributed where another source is used. We can footnote
references, if given the title, date, publisher and any web-link.
Editing and checking for accuracy: Please check your article for
accuracy, especially any numbers/statistics, legislation, names,
organisations, dates, publications quoted etc. We will also check it
although we don’t go back to source, hence the need to check, for
example, that your statistics are correct.
Editorial issues
UKHCA retains editorial control over articles submitted and may amend
articles as necessary. Homecarer is the magazine of a professional body
and as such has to maintain high standards of quality and meet the legal
requirements for published material.
Although we usually try to discuss text changes with authors, time
constraints sometimes mean that we alter text without notice to fit our
editorial policy and style. We employ a professional sub-editor to help
with design, content and headlines, and may make alterations to follow
his recommendations.

Articles received after the copy deadline may be held over to the following
issue. If this happens, we will inform the contributor, so the article can be
updated as necessary.
We will consider expert articles from UKHCA members, including
commercial members, if the content is useful and relevant to other UKHCA
members. Please note we cannot accept promotional articles or
advertorial or items that seek to influence people who use homecare,
unless there is a strong public interest for doing so. If you would like to
write for Homecarer, please send a brief outline of what you intend to
write (maximum 200 words) to the Editor for consideration, before
embarking on a complete piece.
Devolved agenda
We follow the devolved agenda closely, so we ask authors to state clearly
which parts of the UK are the subject of the article, particularly if it
involves new developments or legislation. Where appropriate, we like
articles to consider the position for the whole of the UK.
Contributor’s views
It will be assumed that a contributor’s views are those of the organisation
he or she represents unless wording is used to reflect otherwise. We may
add a comment as a representative body, if the content so requires or if
this would be helpful to our readers.
Features list
We sometimes receive requests for a Features List. The topical nature of
the magazine means we often don’t know what will be included until
shortly before we go to press. Contributors are welcome to ask us about
other articles likely to appear in the same issue.
Complimentary copies
For a sample Homecarer, see www.ukhca.co.uk/homecarer.aspx penultimate edition. We send a complimentary copy of the appropriate
Homecarer to each contributor post publication, so please tell us your
address and how many you would like (up to three).
Follow up
We can include follow up articles in subsequent issues of Homecarer, so
please email if you would like us to consider this option.
