The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) engages over a million children and families each year with highly interactive science learning experiences. Our programs help students sharpen their critical thinking abilities by teaching them how to observe, collect evidence, and draw conclusions. Whether it is at our museum in Portland or at schools, camps, and fairs across Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, we exist to spark curiosity and foster problem-solving skills. Generous contributors like you help OMSI shape the next generation of thinkers and doers in the essential areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. OMSI OUTDOORS OMSI has operated outdoor science education programs across the state, making a lasting impact in the lives of over 100,000 children and families for more than 60 years. Students who have real world opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts are more likely to succeed in their life regardless of their career choice. Hands-on outdoor learning in a social setting has been proven to advance cognitive skill development, develop an affinity for long-term environmental stewardship, and increase civic participation. We currently operate camps throughout Oregon’s diverse ecosystems, from Hancock Field Station in the high desert, which we own, to facilities we lease in lush forests and mountain ranges, and along the stunning Oregon coast. Now, as the result of visionary gifts from John Gray and Investors XII we have the opportunity to develop a permanent new home for OMSI’s marine science education programs on a unique 20-acre coastal property in Newport, Oregon. OMSI receives no outdoor school funds through the public schools. Instead, our programs are supported by generous foundations, families, corporations, and individuals like you. With your support of the OMSI Coastal Discovery Center, we can honor John Gray’s legacy and meet the growing community need for outdoor science education programs. The need in Oregon for additional outdoor education opportunities is great. Many children in Oregon—especially those in rural settings or with limited resources—lack opportunities to learn science subjects in school and in the natural environment. Over 40 percent of Oregon’s 1,300 schools are designated Title 1 schools (with 40 percent of a school’s population eligible for free and/or reduced lunch). OMSI will provide scholarships to children and school groups throughout Oregon to participate in outdoor science learning at the Coastal Discovery Center. Programming will include year-round residential camps for children and families taught by professional educators in the rich learning environment of Oregon’s Central Coast. From dune ecology and ocean observation to exploration of wave energy generation technologies and the sustainable fishing industry, the Coastal Discovery Center will augment and support both the Central Coast’s marine education and economic development strategies. The facility will serve over 5,000 people per year. To build upon this unparalleled environment for marine science learning, we are reaching out beyond the Coastal Discovery Center and into the Central Coast community. We are joining a network of educational organizations, scientists, port operators, wind engineers, commercial fisherman, and other key industry leaders to provide diverse science and technology learning opportunities to children and families. OMSI COASTAL DISCOVERY CENTERS PROJECT GOALS • Prepare students to participate in science and technology-based industries, building a pipeline of innovative workers for Oregon. •Expand the reach of our existing marine science education programs and provide convening space, serving over 5,000 people per year and 90,000 Oregonians over the next 20 years. •Provide scholarships to children and school groups to participate in outdoor science learning. •Complement flourishing marine sciences and ocean observation economic development strategies in the state. •Honor the legacy of John Gray, a visionary leader for the State of Oregon. •Save $50,000 annually by consolidating current marine sciences programming into a single, cost-efficient location with additional income opportunities through space rentals. JOIN US We invite you to be a part of OMSI’s $10 million campaign to shape science education and Oregon’s future through the Coastal Discovery Center. John Gray and Investors XII contributed the first $2.3 million to the campaign, and many have since joined them. With your support, we will create a legacy for Oregon for years to come. Science learning helps our children expand their awareness of career options. Natural resource-related industries account for 33 percent of all jobs in Oregon and comprise 37 percent of our economy. The clean technology sector is expected to add 1.1 million jobs along the West Coast by 2020. Oregon’s future depends on innovative workers equipped with science and technology skills, and the OMSI Coastal Discovery Center will inspire students and prepare future leaders for careers in the scientific industries over the next 20 years.
