The impact of computers on society and ethical issues are presented. Students will gain a thorough understanding of basic computer terminology. 5640: Computer and Technology Applications Grade Level: 9-12 ½ Credit Prerequisite: Introductions to Computers and Technology Course Description: Students will use a computer and application software to complete enhanced and integrated documents and reports through the use of word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, database, internet, and email. Students will demonstrate the ability to manipulate files and folders. Issues regarding software copyright, licensing, copying, and protection from computer viruses will be covered. Future Business Leaders of America activities will be utilized for content and leadership development. 7018: CIS 101: Computers for Learning DUAL CREDIT w/MSU Prerequisite: Computer and Technology Applications or consent of instructor Grade Level: 11, 12 ½ Credit Course Description: Learn skills you will need to succeed in college using Office 2010 application software. To receive Dual Credit, students must have a 18 ACT Composite or an 18 PLAN Composite and a 3.0 GPS.Students will use creativity in this advanced-level dual-credit course creating practical applications through hands-on instruction. Design pamphlets, newsletters, greeting cards, flyers, and dynamic PowerPoint presentations building on the skills you acquired in Computer and Technology Applications. Get ready for college by learning to type reports using MLA and APA styles and endnotes. Students will learn to use advanced features in Excel and Access. Increase your computer skills by learning integration of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. 5646: Business Law Grade Level: 10-12 ½ Credit Course Description: This course develops an understanding of legal rights and responsibilities in personal law and business law with applications applied to everyday roles as consumers and citizens. The student will have an understanding of the American legal system, courts/court procedures, criminal justice system, torts, the civil justice system, oral and written contracts, sales contracts and warranties and consumer protection. Legal terminology is utilized. Students will develop an understanding of employer/employee relations, rights, and duties (including legal reasons for terminating employees) and apply ethical considerations resulting from various situations. Legislation affecting personnel practices will be identified. Students will develop an understanding of a business’ responsibility to know, abide by, and enforce laws and regulations that affect business operations and transactions. Career opportunities and employability skills will be researched. Leadership development will be provided through Future Business Leaders of America. 5651: Introduction to Sports & Event Marketing Grade Level: 10-12 ½ Credit Course Description: This course is designed to develop a basic understanding of the marketing concepts and theories that apply to sports and events. Students will investigate the marketing core including distribution, marketing-information management, pricing, product/service management, promotion, selling, operations, strategic management, and the economic impact and considerations involved in the sports and event marketing industries. 5652: Sports & Event Marketing Grade Level: 10-12 ½ Credit Prerequisite: Introduction to Sports & Event Marketing Course Description: Students will develop an extensive understanding of the marketing core in this course including conducting marketing research, developing a promotional plan, planning, conducting, and evaluating a sport or entertainment event. Employability skills will be developed with the student creating a resume, letter of application and completing a job application. Students will identify and explain the importance of individual work habits and ethics in the workplace. 5659: Web Page Design Grade Level: 9-12 ½ Credit Course Description: This course will enable students to use industry-standard software to create websites. Students will analyze the structure of the worldwide web, apply basic principles of web documents and HTML, develop multi-media web pages, and analyze, create, and organize navigational links. Use of multimedia equipment such as scanners, digital and video cameras, and sound recording devices will be through hands-on instruction. Learn and practice safety precautions for both classroom and home use of the Internet. Career opportunities in electronic publishing will be explored and evaluated. 56556, 56557, 56558: Viking Independent Bank Grade Level: 10-12 ½ -1.5 Credit Prerequisite: Consent of instructor Course Description: This course is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the financial institution field. It involves operation of a student financial center in cooperation with a sponsoring bank which provides application of banking and financial procedures and concepts. Leadership development will be provided through Future Business Leaders of America. This course may be taken multiple times for up to 3 credits. Viking Independent Bank B/C will give students the opportunity to continue to learn and practice financial activities in addition to assuming management and supervisory responsibilities such as training “new employees.” Employment portfolio will be updated. Shadowing the sponsor bank employees will provide excellent experience. Future Business Leaders of America activities will provide leadership development. This course may be taken multiple times for up to 3 credits. 5648: Finance Foundations Grade Level: 10-12 ½ Credit Course Description: This course will provide an introduction to both areas of accounting and finance. Topics will include banking, credit, financial literacy, career exploration, spreadsheet usage, and technical writing. Students will practice various financial calculations. Career exploration in the various fields of accounting will be available. Technical writing will be provided through exploration of case studies. Leadership development will be provided through FBLA. 5657: Accounting & Finance Grade Level: 10-12 ½ Credit Prerequisite: Finance Foundations I Course Description: This course will provide an advanced application of accounting and finance. Topics will include advanced banking, credit, financial literacy, career exploration, spreadsheet usage, and technical writing. The accounting principles taught in this course are based on a double-entry system and include payroll taxes, and financial statements. Detailed career exploration in the various fields of accounting will be available. Technical writing will be provided through exploration of case studies. Students will be introduced to basic tax documents including W-4 – 1040 EZ. Leadership development will be provided through FBLA. 5650, 56501, 56502: Viking Vendors A, B, C Course Description: Grade Level: 9-12 ½ -1.5 Credits This course will provide students basic skills to describe the legal considerations for starting a business, analyze the risks and rewards of starting a business, explain the nature of operating expenses, and identify, evaluate, and select sources for financing a business venture. Students will demonstrate communications skills, economics, operations, promotion, and selling. Students will emulate entrepreneurial skills in the school store. Leadership development will be provided through FBLA. The second and third trimesters are designed to provide students with advanced skills necessary to effectively organize, develop, create and manage their own business. Students will explain career strategies associated with entrepreneurship, describe and formulate a business plan, prepare a promotional budget, exemplify entrepreneurship decision making through projects and simulations. Students will emulate entrepreneurial skills in the school store. 5643: Introduction to Marketing Grade Level 9-12 ½ credit Course Description: This course provides a basic foundation in marketing principles. Students will study economic functions in the marketplace including investigation of the various types of risks that impact business activities, interpret the role and characteristics of marketing compare products and services, explain ways to make responsible buying decisions, and analyze and apply the role of technology in improving the marketing process. Leadership development will be provided through FBLA. 5644: Principles of Marketing Grade Level 9-12 ½ credit Prerequisite: Introduction to Marketing Course Description: Students will learn expanded marketing principles and create brochures and advertisements. Students will develop a career portfolio and identify work habits/ethics and explain their importance in the workplace. Marketing concepts will be applied in advertising and promoting of the school store and school bank. Leadership development will be provided through FBLA. 5660: Video Game Design Grade Level 9-12 ½ credit Course Description: Students will learn a variety of software applications to create games. Students learn the terminology associated with a career in the video gaming industry. This course will provide students with a complete understanding of the technological and creative aspects of video game design.
