SUMMARY
Assist the Engineering and Planning Department in complying with the requirements of the state
MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) program including: GPS fieldwork to gather
geographic data on Township infrastructure and facilities; input data and create maps using the
Township’s geographic information system; collection of data relative to storm sewer outfalls.
Organize, code, categorize and scan maps, drawings and project files in the Township’s map
archives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform fieldwork to collect GPS (Global Positioning System) data and to document physical
characteristics of Township storm sewer facilities and other infrastructure.
Utilize Township GIS system to input infrastructure data, produce attribute tables and create
maps of Township facilities. Confirm map information by proofing against approved subdivision
and land development plans and construction as-built drawings.
Perform MS4 “Illicit Discharge, Detection and Elimination” evaluations of storm sewer outfalls
for evidence of surface water pollution or contamination.
Carry out MS4 stenciling of storm sewer inlets in accordance with state recommendations.
Assist Engineering and other Township Departments with miscellaneous mapping projects.
Organize maps and drawings stored in Township map archives by applying codes in accordance
with Engineering Department procedures, cataloging and listing all drawings, consolidating
drawings and maps into appropriate categories.
Scan stored maps and drawings and organize in Engineering Department electronic files and link
to GIS system as directed.
Other duties as may be assigned by Director.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
Minimum of two (2) years study completed toward Bachelor’s degree in Geography or a related
field from a four-year college or university. Experience with ESRI Arc View/Arc Map required;
ability to operate Global Positioning System equipment preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently. Must be able to read and respond to project
requests either by phone, email or in person. Ability to read, analyze and interpret maps, as-built
drawings, and various Township related plans. Must be familiar with geographic terminology.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with map scales and ratios, produce maps at specified scales, calculate distances
and areas. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide and perform basic trigonometric
functions.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form
and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid driver’s license.
COMPUTER OPERATIONS
Intermediate personal computer skills including electronic mail, routine database activity, word
processing, spreadsheets and graphics. Working knowledge of Arc View/Arc Map Mapping
System, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader. Knowledge of Terra Sync GPS
program and Path Finder transfer program preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The
employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb inclines, walk through fields and woods,
over grass and macadam, step over curbs, climb steps, sit, operate GPS equipment, use hands to
finger, type, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift
and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required of this job include
close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid
conditions, moving mechanical parts and general outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in
the work environment is usually minimal.
