KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Joey Wong, Adalberto
Santos and John Tommasini all had two hits but the
25th-ranked Oregon State baseball team dropped
a 5-4 decision to Tennessee in the Beavers’ 2009
season opener at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Josh Liles singled to right center off Oregon
State closer Kevin Rhoderick to drive in Kentrail
Davis with the running run. Tennessee had opened
the ninth with a 4-3 deficit, but managed two runs
off Rhoderick, who dropped to 0-1 this year after
being saddled with the loss.
Santos began his Oregon State career with a
2-for-4 effort batting out of the second spot of the
batting order. He scored in the third on a double
by Ryan Ortiz and singled home Stefen Romero in
the fourth.
Wong was 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot and
Tommasini had a 2-for-4 afternoon as well. Overall,
the Beavers finished with 12 hits – with eight of the
nine in the starting lineup recording at least one.
Tennessee, meanwhile, had eight off five Oregon
State pitchers. Liles, who had the game-winning
hit, led the Volunteers with two.
TEMPE, Ariz. – Rob Folsom collected four hits
and seven RBI and Jared Norris and Stefen Romero hit back-to-back home runs as the Oregon State
baseball team defeated Northern Illinois, 23-7, at
the opening game of the DeMarini Invitational at
Packard Stadium.
Folsom led the team with four hits, while Romero had two. Norris, Joey Wong and Brett Casey all
had two hits.
The Beavers scored nine runs in both the second and seventh innings to cruise to the victory.
Including the ninth inning of the second game of
the Tennessee series, the Beavers have three innings of eight or more runs in just three games this
season.
Folsom drove in his first runs of the game on a
bases-clearing triple in the second, part of Oregon
State’s nine-run inning. He drove in his fourth run of
the game in the third on a single to left. Folsom sat
on four RBI for the next three innings before driving
in his fifth run of the game on a single up the middle
in the seventh.
TEMPE, Ariz. – Carlos Ramirez’ solo home run
in the eighth inning proved to be the game winner as the Oregon State baseball team dropped a
tough contest to No. 5 Arizona State, 6-3, at Packard Stadium.
Ramirez’ shot off Oregon State reliever Kraig
Sitton broke open a 3-3 tie and helped guide the
Sun Devils to the win. Arizona State added two
runs in the frame for the 6-3 victory.
Sitton was saddled with the loss after going
one full inning. He struck out two and did not issue
a walk but fell to 0-1 this season.
The Beavers are 2-1 in their first three games at
the DeMarini Invitational, with the final game coming Sunday morning against Northern Illinois. Arizona State, meanwhile, improved to 8-0 this season.
Mitchell Lambson picked up the win for Arizona
State after going three innings in relief of starter
Seth Blair. Lambson allowed one hit while striking
out three for his second win of the season.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Jorge Reyes scattered three hits
and one run over five innings and Oregon State’s
two-run fifth gave the Beavers a 2-1 victory over
Northern Illinois at Packard Stadium.
Reyes improved to 2-0 this season. The righthander, making his first start of the season and second appearance overall, improved to 11-6 all-time
as a starter. The start Sunday was the 26th of his
career.

combined to limit Northern Illinois to just four hits.
The Huskies managed three in the first four innings
– two came in the fourth – before a lone hit in the
ninth off closer Kevin Rhoderick gave them four.

second save of the season. He allowed a hit to
Dave Reynolds to open the inning, then struck out
Justin Behm and Matt Behren before walking Joe

3-for-4 and Joey Wong, Jared Norris and Adalberto
Santos both drove in two runs as the 24th-ranked
Oregon State baseball team defeated San Francisco, 11-9, at the Palm Springs Tournament.
The Beavers found themselves down, 6-5,
after six and a half innings and exploded for five
runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jared Norris put
Oregon State ahead with a two-run infield single
that bounced off the third baseman’s glove and hit
Santos, driving the ball toward the third base dugout. Koa Kahalehoe and Wong also drove in runs
in the inning.
Oregon State added two runs in the eighth,
which proved to be valuable as San Francisco rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth. But Sam
Gaviglio, in just his second career appearance,
kept the Dons from scoring further for his first career win.
Mark Grbavac picked up the win after going 1
2/3 inning in relief of starter Greg Peavey. Grbavac
allowed three runs and two walks while striking out
two.
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Sam Gaviglio scattered four hits and a run in 4 2/3 of relief work and
the Oregon State baseball team used a five-run

Palm Springs Tournament.
Gaviglio came on in relief of starter Tanner Robles in the fourth and kept UC Riverside’s hitters at
bay. His only run surrendered came in the sixth on
a sacrifice fly. He also struck out one and walked
one during his outing, which was his third of the
season.
Gaviglio, a freshman from Ashland, Ore., improved to 2-0 this season. In three appearances
for the Beavers, he has worked a combined 7 2/3
innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while also
posting one save.
The Beavers scored all the runs they needed in
the fifth, an inning that saw Oregon State post five
of its eight hits. The Beavers sent nine batters to
the plate in the frame. Brett Casey, batting in the
seven hole as the designated hitter, drove in the
first two runs of the game on a single through the
right side, driving in Ryan Ortiz and Jared Norris.
PORTLAND, Ore. – Ryan Ortiz went 2-for-5
and drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning
as the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team
won a back-and-forth contest against the Missouri
State, 8-7, in the first of a three-game series.
Ortiz came to the plate in the eighth inning
with a third-inning RBI already to his name. With
the bases loaded and only one out, the Beavers’
catcher pulled the second pitch he saw from Missouri State pitcher Cody Aycock down the left-field
line to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs.
Oregon State pitcher James Nygren gave up
one hit, struck out two, and came away with his first
win of the season after pitching two scoreless innings in relief of starter Tyler Waldron, who struck
out a season-high six hitters in six innings of work.

the year, but not before the Beavers nearly rallied
to tie the score.
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – A four-run seventh inning erased a one-run deficit for the 24th-ranked
Oregon State baseball team as the Beavers defeated Texas Tech, 9-6, in OSU’s finale in Palm
Springs.
Down 6-5 entering the bottom half of the seventh, Oregon State sent nine batters to the plate
and finished the inning off with four runs, giving
the Beavers a three-run cushion. Ryan Ortiz and
Adalberto reached on consecutive walks and then
moved to second and third, respectively, when Koa
Kahalehoe was hit by a pitch. Then, the Beavers
tied the game at six when Brett Casey was hit by a
pitch. Casey had been pinch hitting for pinch hitter
Blake Gibbs and was brought in to face reliever
Brian Cloud.
After Jared Norris flew out for the first out of
the inning, John Tommasini walked, bringing in
Santos for a 7-6 lead. Joey Wong then singled to
right, bringing in Casey and Kahalehoe for a 9-6
advantage.
PORTLAND, Ore. - Greg Peavey pitched 5
2/3 innings and tied a career high in strikeouts and
John Tommasini drove in two runs in the seventh
inning, but it was not enough to overcome Missouri
State as the Beavers dropped the second game of
the Papé Grand Slam, 5-3.
The game was suspended with two outs in the
top of the seventh inning with runners on first and
second, and Missouri State right fielder Ben Carlson at the plate with a 2-1 count.
Oregon State pitcher Kraig Sitton took the
mound after throwing three pitches in the seventh
before the game was suspended.
Zak Swyhart took Carlson’s place at the plate
when game resumed, and Sitton was relived by
Kevin Rhoderick after one failed pickoff throw
moved the runners to second and third.
Rhoderick quickly ended the threat with two
straight strikes to retire Swyhart by strikeout.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Sam Gaviglio struck out a
career-high eight and pitched his longest outing of
the season, and Adalberto Santos extended his hitting streak to eight games but the Beavers dropped
the third game of the Papé Grand Slam to Missouri
State, 4-2.
Gaviglio turned in the finest performance of his
young Oregon State career in relief of starter Jorge
Reyes. He pitched 6 1/3 innings while allowing
just three baserunners, and did not allow a walk.
By striking out eight Missouri State hitters Gaviglio
surpassed Tyler Waldron’s seven strikeouts against
Arizona State for the most strikeouts for an Oregon
State pitcher in the 2009 season.
Stefen Romero and John Wallace both had two
hits for the Beavers. Oregon State loaded the bases in the ninth before ultimately falling to the Bears
for the second time in the series. Santos was 1for-4 with one walk to extend his team high hitting
streak to eight games.
Missouri State starter Aaron Meade pitched six
scoreless innings. He struck out six Beaver hitters
and allowed four hits and walked three.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Joey Wong hit the first
grand slam of the season for Oregon State and
Ryan Gorton won his first collegiate start as the
Beavers took down Utah Valley, 17-2, at Goss Stadium.
Oregon State posted 13 hits, 11 walks and five
hit by pitches in the victory, which sent them to their
second straight victory over the Wolverines.
The middle of the Beavers’ lineup was brutally
efficient, as Adalberto Santos, Stefan Romero, and
Logan Boyd combined for five hits in eleven at-bats,
and driving in eight runs, and scoring eight more.
Romero went 2-for-5 and Boyd reached base in all
four of his plate appearances. He connected with
a 1-0 pitch in the third inning that he drove over
the right-centerfield fence for his first home run of
the year.
Gorton made sure that the Beavers offensive
production would stand up as he shut down Utah
Valley in his five innings of work. He started the
game off strong; striking out three of the first six hitters he faced and faced the minimum three hitters
in three of his five innings.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – John Tommasini drove in
three runs and Michael Miller knocked in two more
in his first start of the season as the Oregon State
baseball team improved to 4-0 at Goss Stadium in
2009 by defeating Saint Mary’s, 9-3, in the fourth
game of a five-game homestand.
Tommasini and Miller combined to go five-forseven from the bottom two spots of the order and
scored four of the Beavers nine runs. Both players
were in the middle of Beaver rallies in the second
and seventh that turned the game in favor of Oregon State. Miller’s two hits were a career high, as
were his two RBI and two runs scored.
Adalberto Santos continued his hot hitting with
an RBI single in the fourth inning that extended his
hit streak to 12 games. Catcher Ryan Ortiz went
two-for-four from the plate to give him a four-game
hitting streak. Over those four games, Ortiz has hit
.467 with five RBIs and five runs scored.
Stefen Romero also recorded two singles for
his team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Adalberto Santos went
four-for-five from the plate and fell a triple short
of the cycle, while Greg Peavey and Josh Osich
combined to hold Saint Mary’s without an earned
run as the Beavers rolled to a 12-3 victory at Goss
Stadium.
Santos extended his team high hitting streak
to 11 games with a single in the fourth inning. He
continued his day with a run scoring double in the
following inning before coming to the plate in the
sixth with two runners on and smashing his second
home run of the weekend. At the end of the day,
Santos had driven in four runs while scoring three.
Logan Boyd added to the attack with a twofor-three effort from the plate, driving in runners in
the fifth and eighth innings. The two hits marked
his first multi-hit game of the 2009 season. Logan
Lotti made his mark on the game as a pinch hitter in
the eighth inning, when he launched a run-scoring
double down the right field line for his first extrabase hit and RBI of his Oregon State career.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jorge Reyes struck out a
career high 11 in seven innings of work, and John
Tommasini continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-4
effort as the Oregon State baseball team defeated
Hawai’i, 8-4, to cap off a season-long five-game
homestand with a perfect mark.
Reyes’ 11 strikeouts were the most by an Oregon State pitcher since Mike Stutes fanned 12
against UNLV on April 20, 2007. Reyes held the
Rainbows to four hits over seven innings of work,
his longest outing since throwing eight innings
against Pacific on May 24 of last season.
He improved to 3-1 on the season, earning his
10th career non-conference victory in the process.
The Oregon State offensive attack was led by
Tommasini’s three hits, which drove in two Beavers’
runs. The effort was his fourth multi-hit game of the
season and second three-hit performance in as
many games. John Wallace also pitched in with a
two-hit game, reaching base three times and scoring two runs. The Beavers are now 8-0 when John
Wallace hits in the top two spots in the order.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tyler Waldron pitched
eight shutout innings and Ryan Ortiz tied a seasonhigh with three hits as the Oregon State baseball
team won its 2009 home opener in convincing
fashion with a 7-0 win over Utah Valley at Goss
Stadium.
Waldron was sharp from the first pitch as he
struck out three of the first five hitters that came
to the plate. The Wolverines were not able to muster a hit off of the Beaver hurler until the fourth inning, and only collected three against Waldron in
his team-high eight innings of work. His six strikeouts in the game tied a season high, which he last
achieved on February 28 against Arizona State.
The win for Waldron improved him to 1-1 this
season.
Oregon State catcher Ryan Ortiz had arguably
his best game at the plate all season, going 3-for-3
with one walk in four plate appearances. He was
in the middle of every Beaver rally, scoring two
runs and driving in three more. His bases-clearing
double in the fifth inning broke the game open for
Oregon State.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Jorge Reyes threw seven
innings and Stefen Romero posted his 10th multiple-RBI game of the season as the Oregon State
baseball team took the Civil War series finale over
Oregon, 8-1, in front of 13,709 fans at PGE Park.
Reyes won his second straight game after
going a full seven innings against the Ducks. He
limited Oregon to just two hits while walking three
and striking out six to improve to 4-1 this season
and 13-7 all-time as a starter. His only run allowed
came in the seventh and was unearned.
In his last two starts, the native of Warden,
Wash., has scattered six hits and three earned
runs over 14 innings of work. During that stretch,
in which he is 2-0, Reyes has struck out 17 and
walked six.
Romero, meanwhile, extended his hit streak
to four games by going 2-for-4. He drove in the
game’s first run with a single in the first and then
singled home two more in the fifth. The two RBI
gave Oregon State an 8-0 lead, with John Wallace and Adalberto Santos scoring on the play. It
capped off a three-run inning.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Greg Peavey pitched a career-high seven innings and held California to two
runs, and three Beavers chipped in two-RBI base
hits to push Oregon State past the Golden Bears,
6-2, in front of a Goss Stadium regular season record crowd of 2,789.
After giving up a leadoff home run to California’s Brett Jackson to start off the game, Peavey
(3-1) settled down and retired the next nine consecutive hitters. He spread four hits across seven
innings and his seven strikeouts on the day tied a
career-high last achieved against Missouri State on
March 20.
Peavey improved to 3-1 on the year and
dropped his earned run average to 3.06.
John Wallace, Michael Miller, and John Tommasini each had two-RBI base hits in the game. Miller
put the Beavers on the board in the second with a
single up the middle that gave the Beavers a 2-1
lead. The Oregon State right fielder reached base
three times in the game and is hitting .429 on the
season in 17 games.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Stefen Romero produced
his team-leading 11th multi-hit game of the season and Greg Peavey did not allow an earned run
for the second straight start, but the Oregon State
baseball team dropped an extra innings contest, 32, to Oregon in front of 15,540 at PGE Park.
Romero went 2-for-5 from the plate, as well as
scoring one Beaver (14-6 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10
Conference) run and driving in the other. Joey Wong
equaled Romero’s hit total, going 2-for-3 with singles in the first and fourth innings. The two hits gave
Wong his eighth two-hit game of the season.
Peavey turned in his second consecutive outing without allowing an earned run. He spread out
four hits over six innings and struck out three. He,
however, did not figure in the decision.
The game was scoreless through the first six
innings of the game as Peavey was matched by
Oregon starter Erik Stavert. John Wallace got the
Beavers their first lead in the seventh inning with a
hard-hit single up the middle that drove in Romero
from second. Romero helped the Beavers tack on
their second run with a double to the right-centerfield wall that scored Ortiz from first.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tyler Waldron struck out
a season-high eight and Adalberto Santos went 3for-4 as the Oregon State baseball team overcame
an early deficit to take down California, 8-4, in front
of a crowd of 2,138.
Waldron (3-1) picked up his third win in as
many starts, pitching into the eighth inning for the
third straight time by going 7 2/3 innings. The Oregon State starter stuck out eight California hitters
and did not walk a batter.
After a rough start that saw the Bears use
a strong wind blowing out to left field to hit four
doubles in the first three innings and build up a 2-0
lead, Waldron settled down and held them scoreless for the next 4 2/3 innings.
Santos led the Beavers’ attack with his sixth
multi-hit game of the season, knocking three singles and driving in two runs. The Beaver utility man
has collected a hit in 20 of the Beavers’ 22 games
this season and has driven in multiple runners in
six games.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ryan Ortiz drove a ball into
left-centerfield with the bases loaded in the 11th
inning to cap a late-inning comeback and give Oregon State a 5-4 victory over California in front of
a Goss Stadium regular-season record crowd of
3,023.
The win gave the Beavers a sweep of the Golden Bears after winning 8-4 on Friday and 6-2 on
Saturday. It is Oregon State’s first sweep of a Pac10 club since taking three from Washington State
in 2006. It is also the Beavers’ first Pac-10 sweep
at home since taking all three from Stanford that
season.
The Beavers entered the bottom of the 11th inning down one after California (15-14 overall, 36 Pacific-10 Conference) took its first lead of the
game in the top half of the inning. One-out walks
by Joey Wong and Adalberto Santos, and a single
by Stefen Romero loaded the bases for Carter Bell.
Bell, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth, drove an offering from pitcher
Kevin Miller (1-2) up the middle to tie the game at
four and set the stage for Ortiz.
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Beavers baseball team
added four runs in the top of the ninth to put the
game out of reach for the Ducks in a 7-1 victory at
PK Park in Eugene, Ore., Friday during the Civil War
series presented by the Northwest Dodge Dealers
in front of a sellout crowd. The game marked the
first between the two clubs in 28 years.
Oregon State started off the ninth inning with a
3-1 lead, but added four big runs by capitalizing on
three errors by Duck pitchers to take the 7-1 lead.
Beaver catcher Ryan Ortiz stroked a line drive
to center field to start off the ninth inning for his
second hit of the day. Ortiz then advanced to
second on a throwing error by the pitcher on an
attempted pickoff play to first. Stefan Romero followed by reaching safely on another error by the
Duck pitcher to put runners at first and second.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Ryan Ortiz tied a career-high
by going 4-for-5 and the 16th-ranked Oregon
State baseball team utilized a four-run eighth for a
9-5 victory over Arizona at Sancet Stadium.
On Thursday, Ortiz posted four hits for the third
time of his career, singling in the fourth, fifth, eighth
and ninth innings. He also drove in one as the Beavers stretch their win streak to five games, their
second-longest of the season.
The Beavers pulled from behind with the big
four-run seventh in which Oregon State took advantage of an error on Arizona closer Jason Stoffel and posted five hits. Ortiz started off the inning
by reaching on an infield single and moved all the
way to third when Stoffel overthrew first on a failed
pickoff attempt.
The Beavers’ catcher scored when the next batter, Jared Norris, singled home his second run of
the game. He moved to second on a groundout by
Brett Casey, then broke the 5-5 tie when Logan
Lotti doubled to left center.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Joey Wong went 3-for-5 and
Jared Norris hit a home run for the second consecutive day as the duo helped lead the 16th-ranked
Oregon State baseball team to a 8-3 win over Arizona in the three-game series finale.
With the win, the Beavers took the series from
the Wildcats, 2-1. It’s Oregon State’s first series
win in Tucson since the 1963 season when Arizona
was a member of the Western Athletic Conference
and the teams were meeting for the first time.
The win also put Oregon State at 20-7 overall
this season – and 7-2 in Pacific-10 Conference
play. The team reached the 20-win plateau in just
27 games; last year’s club took 34 games to win
20.
On Saturday, Wong set a season-high with
three hits. He singled in the first and duplicated his
first at bat in the second, driving in two runs. In the
seventh, he reached on a double to start the inning
and scored on Norris’ third home run of the season.
Wong now has 10 multiple-hit games this season,
putting him just two behind his season total of 12
last season.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Michael Miller hit a threerun home run and Ryan Ortiz went 2-for-4 and
drove in three more runs as the 14th-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated BYU, 8-4, to
sweep the Cougars in the short two-game series
at Goss Stadium.
After the Beavers had fallen behind 1-0 in the
second inning, a one-out double by Max Shupe and
an error by Cougar (20-15) second basemen Andrew Law on a Koa Kahalehoe ground ball set the
stage for Miller. The sophomore came through in a
huge way, launching the offering from Marc Oslund
(3-1 in 2009) off of the top of the scoreboard in
right-center field for his first career home run. The
blast drove in three runs and put Oregon State
ahead for good.
Ortiz doubled in the second inning to drive in
Brett Casey and extend his hitting streak to eight
games. The Beavers’ catcher is 18-of-33 (.545)
over the streak, which is the second-longest by an
Oregon State hitter this season.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Ryan Gorton worked five solid
innings of relief and Oregon State attempted rallies
in each of the last five innings, but the 16th-ranked
Beavers dropped a 6-5 decision to Arizona.
Gorton worked in relief and scattered just two
hits and two runs while striking out three. His relief
effort helped the Beavers nearly overcome an early
5-2 deficit. However, the Beavers stranded 12 runners, including nine in the last five innings. Oregon
State stranded one in the ninth after Brett Casey
singled with one out.
But after Casey reached base, Jason Stoffel,
Arizona’s closer, got the final two outs of the game
for his sixth save of the season. It gave Joe Allison,
Arizona’s first reliever of the game, his first win of
the season after going 1 2/3 innings.
Greg Peavey started for the Beavers and went
three innings before being replaced by Ryan Gorton in the fourth. Peavey was touched for seven hits
and six runs in his seventh start of the season. He
dropped to 3-2 this season.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Michael Miller went 2-for2 and drove in two runs, and Ryan Ortiz added two
more hits as the Beavers improved to 9-0, defeating visiting BYU, 9-7, at Goss Stadium.
Miller collected his third multi-hit game of the
season with singles in the second and fifth innings.
His first-inning single with the bases loaded scored
two OSU runners.
Ortiz reached base in his first three plate appearances and scored in the second inning. He
went 2-for-3 with a walk to extend his hit streak to
seven games. During those games, the catcher is
hitting .551 with 10 runs scored and seven RBI.
Oregon State infielder Stefen Romero lined a
double down the first base line in the fourth inning
for his team leading 29th RBI of the season.
Josh Osich and Sam Gaviglio combined to
throw eight innings, allowing six runs on nine hits.
Both pitchers struck out five Cougar hitters. The
five strikeouts were a career high for Osich, who
also threw a season-long four innings.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ryan Ortiz went 2-for-3
with two doubles and Tyler Waldron pitched through
the seventh inning for the fourth time in nine starts,
but it was not enough as USC was able to hold off
the Beavers for a 4-3 win at Goss Stadium.
Ortiz extended his hitting streak to nine games
in the fourth inning with a two-out double that was
driven down the right field line. The Beavers’ catcher added a second double in the eighth inning with
a drive that bounced off the center field wall for his
14th extra-base hit of the season.
Tyler Waldron took the loss for the Beavers despite retiring the final 10 hitters he faced. The Trojans got to Waldron early as USC shortstop Grant
Green scored from first on a hit-and-run by Ricky
Oropesa in the first. Waldron allowed three more
runs over the next three innings, but did not allow a
baserunner after the fourth inning.
Waldron dropped to 3-2 on the year.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Greg Peavey pitched a
career-long 7 1/3 innings, allowing just two runs,
and Ryan Ortiz extended his hit streak to 10 games,
but it was not enough as USC scored three times
in the top of the ninth inning to break a late tie for
a 5-2 victory over the 14th-ranked Oregon State
baseball team at Goss Stadium.
Peavey scattered five Trojans’ hits over 7 1/3
innings, striking out six and walking just two while
receiving a no-decision. The Beavers’ right-hander
retired the side in order in four of his seven full innings and at one point retired seven Trojans in a
row. The outing was Peavey’s second in three
games in which he completed seven innings.
Ortiz used a single through the left side of the
infield to lead off the eighth inning to extent his
hitting streak to 10 games, which ties his careerlong streak achieved during the 2008 season. The
catcher finished the afternoon 1-for-3, scoring a
run in Oregon State’s two-run first.
Joey Wong gave the Beavers a 2-for-5 effort
from the leadoff spot, including a two-out triple off
of the right-center field wall in the fifth inning.
LOS ANGELES – Stefen Romero hit his teamleading fourth home run of the season but the Oregon State baseball team could not hold on to a
four-run lead in a 7-5 loss at UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Romero hit a two-run home run in the third to
cap off a three-run inning for the Beavers, who took
a 5-1 lead at that point. Romero’s shot was his
fourth of the season, giving him the team lead, and
was his first since March 13.
The home run and four-run lead after three innings did not hold up, however, as UCLA scored
six unanswered runs for the win. The loss dropped
the 17th-ranked Beavers to 23-10 overall and 85 in Pacific-10 Conference games this season.
UCLA, meanwhile, improved to 18-20 overall and
10-6 in conference games.
Oregon State took a 2-0 lead in the first. Ryan
Ortiz tripled home John Wallace and Romero drove
in his first run of the game on a groundout to second.
LOS ANGELES – Jorge Reyes scattered six
hits and three runs over six innings, but the Oregon
State right-hander took the loss in UCLA’s 5-2 win
over the 17th-ranked Beavers in the three-game
series finale at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Of the three runs allowed by Reyes, just one
was unearned. Oregon State committed five errors
on the afternoon – two while Reyes was on the hill
– giving the Beavers’ pitching staff four unearned
runs on the day.
Reyes allowed a UCLA run in the third when
Steve Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season. He was victimized for two unearned runs in the
fifth to take the loss and fall to 5-2 on the year.
UCLA added to its 3-2 lead in the seventh when
the Beavers committed three errors. Rodriguez singled to start the inning, moved to third on a pickoff
overthrow and then scored when Stefen Romero
could not hold on to a throw from Carter Bell. Blair
Dunlap, who was the runner who reached on the
error, scored all the way from first when the next
batter, Cody Decker, singled.

LOS ANGELES – Joey Wong’s single up the
middle capped off a three-run ninth as the Oregon
State baseball team rallied for a 5-3 win over UCLA
at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Down 3-2 entering the ninth, Oregon State
needed to rally to win its first game of the weekend. Wong’s single up the middle scored two and
capped off a excellent fundamental inning for the
Beavers, who utilized three hits, a walk and a sacrifice bunt to take a two-run lead off UCLA and
Gavin Brooks, who dropped to 0-3 this season.
Rob Folsom started off the inning with a single
up the middle, and moved to second on a Brett
Casey sacrifice bunt. Adalberto Santos, pinch hitting for Michael Miller, walked, setting up runners
on first and second with one out.
Both runners moved up a base when Brooks
threw his first pitch to Max Shupe in the dirt. The
next pitch Brooks threw to Shupe came back
through the box on a single up the middle, tying the
game when Folsom scored from third. Brent Warren then pinch ran for Shupe, and moved to second
on a passed ball, setting up Wong.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – John Wallace hit his first
career grand slam in the fifth inning and Ryan Ortiz collected his 12th multi-hit game in his last 15
as Oregon State defeated Oregon, 10-2, at Goss
Stadium.
With the game tied at two in the fifth inning,
Wallace came to the plate with the bases loaded
and no outs. The OSU center fielder pulled a 1-1
offering from Oregon starter Madison Boer (1-5)
over the right field fence to break the tie and give
Oregon State a lead they never relinquished. The
grand slam was Wallace’s first of his career and
the Beavers second of the season. A sacrifice fly
in the eighth inning gave him five RBI on the day,
a career-high.
Ortiz singled twice to extend his hitting streak to
four games and give him a team-leading 17th multihit effort on the season. The Beavers’ catcher has
a hit in 14 of his last 15 games, with two or more
base knocks in 12 of those contests. His single in
the first inning to drive in Wallace gave the Beavers
their 22nd first-inning run and Ortiz his 28th RBI
of the year.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Koa Kahalehoe scored the
game-winning run in the 10th inning on an errant
throw from USC pitcher Daniel Cooper, giving the
14th-ranked Oregon State baseball team a 5-4 victory in the series finale.
After Kraig Sitton and Kevin Rhoderick combined to retire the side in the top of the 10th, Kahalahoe led the bottom half of the inning off with an
infield single. Michael Miller followed that with a line
drive past USC first baseman Ricky Oropesa to put
two runners on with no outs for the Beavers. John
Tommasini then bunted to Cooper, who overthrew
third baseman Billy Pinkerton and allowed Kahalahoe to score from second and give the Beavers the
extra-innings victory.
Miller went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs to
pace the Beavers, Kahalehoe and Stefen Romero
finished with two apiece in the 10-hit attack for the
Beavers, who dodged being swept at home by a
conference club for the first time since 2007.
The Beavers got their other four runs in the first
courtesy of a Romero double and a two-RBI single
by Miller. Ryan Ortiz also scored on a bases-loaded
fielding error by second baseman Joe De Pinto.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State rallied for
two runs in the ninth inning, but it was not enough
to overcome four early runs from No. 3 Arizona
State in a 4-2 loss at Goss Stadium. A regular season record crowd of 3,129 was on hand to watch
the game.
Entering the bottom of the ninth down 4-0, Ryan
Ortiz led the inning off by drawing a walk off of Arizona State starter Mike Leake. Stefen Romero followed that with a double off the left field wall and
Jared Norris was then hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Adalberto Santos.
Santos drove the ball into right field, but was
robbed on a diving catch on the warning track by
Matt Newman that turned the play into a sacrifice
fly. Koa Kahalehoe followed that up with a deep fly
ball to left that scored one more run, but Michael
Miller grounded out on the next pitch to end the
Beavers’ threat.
Tanner Robles started on the mound for the
Beavers for the fifth time this season and struck
out a season-high six hitters in five innings of work.
The southpaw did not walk a batter for the second
straight start.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State scored nine
unanswered runs to come from behind for the second consecutive game and secure a 10-5 victory
over No. 3 Arizona State at Goss Stadium. The win
gave the Beavers a series victory over the Pac-10’s
first-place team.
After tying the game in the seventh inning, Oregon State put its first six hitters on base in the
bottom of the eighth. Stefen Romero led the inning
off with a single to right-center and Jared Norris
followed with a five-pitch walk. Adalberto Santos
then stepped to the plate and showed bunt on the
first pitch he saw from Sun Devils’ reliever Matt
Newman, but pulled back and hit a line drive past
charging first baseman Riccio Torrez and into right
field to drive in Romero from second and put the
Beavers ahead for good.
Santos came through with singles in his final
two at-bats for his second consecutive 2-for-4 day
and his ninth multi-hit effort of the season. The designated hitter had four hits in 10 at-bats and drove
in three runs over the weekend.
Joey Wong reached base in four of his five plate
appearances, going 2-for-3.
SEATTLE – Tanner Robles allowed just three
Washington baserunners in 6 1/3 innings and the
25th-ranked Oregon State baseball team held off
a late rally to defeat the Huskies, 6-4, in front of
4,296 at Safeco Field.
Robles won his first game of the season in impressive fashion. He limited the Huskies to just two
hits and one walk while striking out three. The 6 1/3
innings constituted his longest outing of the season
and he threw just 77 pitches.
Washington managed to get a runner on second just twice against Robles, who, after giving up
a hit to start the game, retired the next 16 batters
he faced. The Huskies managed a mini rally in the
sixth, putting runners on first and second courtesy
of a hit and a walk, but the lefty got the third out of
the inning on a popup to short.
Already up 2-0 after five, the Beavers gave
themselves a big cushion with four runs in the sixth,
all coming off Washington reliever Tyler Cheney.
Stefen Romero capped off the inning with a triple
to right center.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Koa Kahalehoe came
through with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of
the ninth inning to give the Oregon State baseball
team a comeback victory over No. 3 Arizona State
at Goss Stadium.
After falling 3-2 in the top half of the ninth courtesy of a Drew Maggi triple for Arizona State, the
Beavers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning for Jared Norris. The OSU first
baseman fell behind in the count, 1-2, before hitting a fly ball to center fielder Jason Kipnis that was
deep enough to score Rob Folsom from third.
A walk by Adalberto Santos loaded the bases
once again for the Beavers and brought Kahalehoe
to the plate with two outs. After fouling off numerous pitches from Sun Devils’ pitcher Mitchell Lambson, the Oregon State senior lined an offering into
left field for a base hit that drove home Ryan Ortiz
for the game-winning run.
Norris went 2-for-4 for Oregon State and drove
in two of the Beavers’ four runs, the first coming on
a single to left-center field in the fifth inning. Norris now has 23 RBI and multiple hits in five games
this season.
PORTLAND, Ore. – Sam Gaviglio struck out
seven and scattered three hits and a run over five
innings to pace the 25th-ranked Oregon State
baseball team to a 5-1 victory over Portland at Joe
Etzel Field.
Adalberto Santos and Ryan Ortiz both drove in
two runs for the Beavers, who improved to 17-5 on
the year in non-conference games. Oregon State
has now won nine straight non-conference games.
Gaviglio started for the third time this season
and picked up his seventh win of the season, which
leads the team. His only blemish came in the fourth
when Riley Hendricks hit his fourth home run of the
season over the left field fence.
Gaviglio, whose earned run average now sits at
3.49, has allowed just six hits and three runs over
his last two outings, both starts. During that stretch,
he has 13 strikeouts in 10 innings.
Ortiz finished with two hits for his 18th multiplehit game of the season. His two RBI came on a single to left in the Beavers’ (28-12 overall) three-run
fifth, which gave Oregon State a four-run cushion.
2009 Oregon State Baseball • 45
SEATTLE – Ryan Ortiz hit his second home run
of the season but it was not enough to help the
Beavers overcome a 11-run deficit to Washington
in a 15-6 loss to the Huskies at Husky Ballpark.
Ortiz’s shot drove in three and was his first
home run since April 11 at Arizona. It capped off
a six-run stretch for the Beavers over the sixth and
seventh innings, but proved to be too late to break
Washington’s big offensive day.
Ortiz ended the game a triple short of the
cycle. He doubled in the first and singled to right
in the sixth. The junior extended his hit streak to
four games and is one off his third hit streak of five
games or more this season. His mult-hit effort was
his 20th of the season while his three RBI marked
his ninth multi-RBI game of 2009.
Michael Miller also had two hits for his fifth multiple-hit game of the season.
Washington hit two home runs over the first two
innings and held an 11-0 lead after the fifth inning
had been completed.

SEATTLE – Washington pinch hitter Aaron
Russell’s RBI double in the seventh proved to be
the game-winner as the Oregon State baseball
team dropped a 4-3 decision to the Huskies in the
rubber match of a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
Russell doubled off the left center wall off Oregon State reliever Kraig Sitton, driving in Caleb
Brown and snapping a 3-3 tie.
Sitton dropped to 1-3.
Oregon State posted eight hits to Washington’s
six, but stranded 11 runners. The Huskies stranded
12 as well. In fact, the teams combined to leave 58
runners on base over the three-game series.
Jared Norris, Joey Wong and Adalberto Santos
all had two hits apiece to help account for the eight
hits on the afternoon.
Jorge Reyes made his 11th start of the season
and lasted four innings before being pulled for Ryan
Gorton in the fifth with runners on first and second.
Reyes allowed four hits and three runs, but walked
six while striking out five.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Adalberto Santos went 3for-5 and hit two home runs, but it was not enough
as the Oregon State baseball team dropped a 7-6
decision to Washington State in front of 2,749 at
Goss Stadium.
Santos hit home runs to both right and left field
in the game and became the first Oregon State hitter to homer twice in a game since Drew George
against Pacific on March 10 of last season. The
Oregon State designated hitter drove in two runs
and scored three while collecting his 11th multi-hit
game of the season.
Ryan Ortiz also came through with a three-hit
game and homered for the third time this season,
it coming in the third inning. The long ball was the
eighth of his career and the multi-hit effort was his
team-leading 21st of the season.
Jared Norris went 3-for-3 with three singles
to extend his hitting streak to six games. The first
baseman scored the Beavers’ first run of the game
in the second inning.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ryan Ortiz went 3-for-5 and
hit his second home run of the weekend, and Rob
Folsom went 2-for-4 and also homered but it was
not enough as Washington State scored the goahead run in the ninth inning to defeat Oregon State
7-6 in the rubber match of their Pac-10 series.
Ortiz collected RBI in three of his five at-bats.
With the Beavers trailing 6-5 in the seventh inning,
the Oregon State catcher led the inning off with his
fourth home run of the year, it going to right field, to
tie the game at six. The three RBI-effort was his fifth
of the year, and the three hits gave Ortiz his teamleading 22nd multi-hit game of the year.
As the second hitter of the game for the Beavers, Folsom lifted a pitch from Washington State
starter David Stilley over the left field wall for the
first home run of his career and the first by a Beaver in the first inning. His single in the fourth inning
gave the junior his fourth multi-hit effort of 2009.
With two outs in the second inning, Carter Bell
singled through the right side to give himself a
three-game hitting streak.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State starter Tyler Waldron pitched a complete game two-hitter in
an 8-1 victory over Gonzaga in game one of a two
game mid-week series at Goss Stadium.
Waldron’s complete game is the first for the
Beavers this year and only the second in the past
three years. His two hits both came in the sixth with
two outs. He allowed one run, and struck out eight
batters. The eight strikeouts tied his season high.
Going into the bottom of the eighth, Oregon
State had a slim 2-1 lead when freshman Carter
Bell added insurance runs for the Beavers in the
bottom of the eighth with a three-run home run over
the left field wall. The three-run shot is the first of
Bell’s career.
The Beavers struck first in the bottom of the first
when Michael Miller led off for the Beavers with a
single to left field off Bulldogs’ starting pitcher Ryan
Carpenter. Rob Folsom came up next and drew a
four-pitch walk advancing Miller to second. After
Ryan Ortiz advanced Miller to third base on a fly
ball to center field, Folsom moved to second on a
wild pitch.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sam Gaviglio went a
career-long 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one
earned run while Jared Norris went 2-for-4 and
drove in three runs as Oregon State evened its series against Washington State with an 8-2 victory
in front of 3,073 at Goss Stadium.
Making his fourth start of the season, and his
first against Pac-10 competition, Gaviglio spread
four hits through 7 2/3 innings, striking out four and
walking just one to pick up his team-leading eighth
win of the season. The walk was Gaviglio’s first in
14 2/3 innings of work, the last coming on April 19
against USC.
In his last 19 2/3 innings, Gaviglio, now 8-1 on
the year, has issued one walk.
Norris hit in the fourth spot of the lineup for the
Beavers for just the fourth time this season. He
made the decision pay off by collecting his ninth
multi-RBI game this year, driving in runs in both the
first and sixth innings. The 2-for-4 effort extended
his hitting streak to seven games. Norris is now 5for-8 in the series against the Cougars and is hitting .481 during his current hitting streak.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tyler Waldron pitched 7
1/3 scoreless innings and struck out 10 as the
Beavers gave head coach Pat Casey his 500th win
at Oregon State with a 2-0 victory over Oregon in
front of 2,564 at Goss Stadium.
The win makes Casey 500-311-4 at Oregon
State in his career. He has led the Beavers to at
least 30 wins in 10 of his 15 seasons at Oregon
State in addition to national championships in
2006 and 2007. Casey earned his first victory at
Oregon State with a 4-3 win over Western Oregon
on Feb. 22, 1995.
He is now one of three OSU coaches to win
at least 500 in their tenure with the Beavers. Jack
Riley won 613 from 1973-94 and Ralph Coleman
won 561 in four different stints from 1923-66.
Making his second consecutive Tuesday start,
Waldron was dominant while improving his record
to 5-3. The righty struck out a career-high 10, including striking out the side in the second inning.
Waldron retired 15 consecutive Oregon hitters
from the third until the eighth inning.
Over the last two starts, Waldron has struck out
18 hitters in 16 1/3 innings.

KEIZER, Ore. – Salem native Joey Wong hit a
bases-loaded double in Oregon State’s five-run
fourth to help pace the Beavers past Oregon, 144, in front of 5,177 fans at Volcanoes Stadium.
The double highlighted Wong’s night, which
saw the shortstop post a season-high four hits.
Wong doubled to the left-center gap in the
fourth, driving in John Wallace, Rob Folsom and
John Tommasini. It highlighted the inning, which
also saw run-scoring singles from Adalberto Santos and Jared Norris. The inning saw the Beavers
send 10 batters the plate and take advantage of
four hits, two walks and an Oregon error.
Wong’s double was his second hit of the game.
He singled past the third-base bag in the third but
was stranded to end the inning. He finished the
game 4-for-6 after singling twice in the Beavers’
eight-run sixth.
Already up 6-2 entering the sixth, the Beavers
sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs
to take a 14-2 lead. Wong had two hits in the inning, while Tommasini and Stefen Romero both
drove in two.
STANFORD, Calif. – Oregon State rallied with
runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Beavers could not hold off Stanford late and dropped a
7-6 decision to the Cardinal at Sunken Diamond.
Down 5-3 entering the seventh, Oregon State
managed two runs in the inning off a passed ball
and a wild pitch. The two runs evened the score at
five, but the Beavers allowed two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
OSU rallied in the eighth when Drew Storen,
Stanford’s closer, struck out Koa Kahalehoe. But
the pitch was wild, allowing Jared Norris to score
from third and pull OSU to within one. But Storen
was able to get the final four outs of the game to
improve to 7-1 on the year and give the Cardinal a
30-24 record (and 13-13 mark in Pacific-10 Conference play).
Tanner Robles, throwing in his first game in
relief this season, dropped to 1-3 after taking the
loss. He allowed two runs and no hits in three innings of work.
Three Beavers had two hits in the loss: Kahalehoe, Stefen Romero and John Wallace.

STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Sam Gaviglio
tossed Oregon State’s first complete-game shutout in more than three years, holding Stanford to
just three hits in a 5-0 win over Stanford at Sunken
Diamond.
Gaviglio allowed singles in the second, third
and fourth innings. He retired the last 16 batters he
faced and struck out seven while walking none. In
his last 29 innings, Gaviglio has walked one.
The complete-game shutout is the Beavers’ first
in more than 38 months. Jonah Nickerson was the
last Beavers’ pitcher to go the distance and keep
his opponent off the board. He did so against Nevada on March 4, 2006.
Gaviglio, a native of Ashland, Ore., improved to
9-1. Though official historical records are incomplete, it is believed to be an Oregon State freshman
record for wins in a single season.
Gaviglio has now won his last six decisions,
with three coming in the month of May. He came
into Friday night’s game with an earned run average
of 3.38. He dropped it to 2.84 with the shutout of
the Cardinal. He has a 1.88 ERA and three wins in
Pac-10 play this season.
STANFORD, Calif. – Tyler Waldron scattered
five hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings and the
Oregon State baseball team scored three runs in
the seventh to pull away from Stanford in a 5-2 win
at Sunken Diamond.
The win gave the Beavers a series victory over
the Cardinal in the 2009 regular season finale.
Making his second start in less than week, Waldron allowed multiple hits in an inning once, the
seventh. He ended the game with five strikeouts
and a walk. After allowing a hit to start the game, he
retired the next 10 batters he faced before allowing
a single to Toby Gerhart in the fourth.
Waldron has now gone at least six full innings
in nine of his 13 starts this season. He picked up
the win Sunday to finish the regular season with a
6-3 record.
In his last two outings, which included a win
Tuesday against Oregon, Waldron has gone 14
innings, scattering 10 hits and two runs. He has
struck out 15 during that stretch.
