Jammu and Kashmir is a state in northern India, granted special autonomy under the article
370 of the constitution of India. The state is covered with beautiful snowy mountains. This
state is also known as 'Heaven on Earth'. It is the treasure of natural surroundings. The huge
mountains seem like touching hands of earth. The state is spread on 2,22,236 Km area and
has a population of 12,548,926. The languages like Urdu, Hindi, English, Dogri, Kashmiri,
Ladhaki and Sheena are commonly spoken. The literacy rate of the state is 66.7%.
The workshops were organized in collaboration with BCI, I.N.T.A.C.H and State Institute of
Education, Jammu and Kashmir on Capacity Building Programme for Master Trainers in Art
Integrated Learning.
The workshop in Jammu (21st to 26th July, 2014) saw 49 teachers and teacher educators as
part of the program, whereas the workshop in Kashmir (4th to 9th August, 2014) had 52
participants from its various districts. The workshops was co-ordinated by Prof. Pawan
Sudhir and assisted by Mr. Santosh Rana (Assistant Professor) of this department.
The following points were emphasized upon during the workshop:
1. Role of arts in learning and development of skills.
2. 100% involvement and attendance of the participants.

3. Giving proper time and space to regional arts of both the states in Art Integrated
Learning.
4. To attempt the preservation of local culture, thus encouraging it.
5. To create a new flow of energy in schools and classrooms for teachers and students
through Art Integrated Learning.
The following were the highlights of the workshops:
“Chetna Satra” or Morning Assembly: the workshop began with the morning assembly
each day wherein the participants were motivated to design different geometrical shapes to
make it more attractive and creative. The prayers would be sung in new languages every day;
storytelling, poem narration, local regional news, and theatre activities became a part of the
morning assembly as well. The participants were asked to attend the workshop in different
costumes and outfits on a daily basis, so that they will be able to utilize the art forms which
they learnt during the day. The participants wore their self-created face masks, and
sometimes they even made use of it while giving a performance, thus making the workshop
more creative and energetic. The participants agreed to the fact that the morning assembly in
school will bring positive and creative flow in the schools.
Visual Arts : Various forms of visual arts like paper magic, innovative use of colors, collagemaking, clay modeling were a part of the activities at the workshop. The emphasis was to
integrate visual arts in subject transaction in the classroom.
Theatre: Theatre is a mixture of various art forms that can bring about innovation in
teaching- learning for teachers and students. All the participants in the workshop were given
topics in subjects such as mathematics, social science, science, language and local culture, to
create a play performance, and later present it in front of all. During the performance, the
remaining participants observed and gave suggestions towards improvement, thus discussing
various ways of teaching and learning through theatre.
Apart from the above mentioned activities of the workshop, the participants viewed
videos/films that were designed by NCERT as well as a few schools where arts as pedagogy
is being well- implemented. Ms. Veena Gandhi, principal of an MCD School in Delhi
presented a film that was designed by her, comprising of the activities that have been taking
place in her school with the help of this pedagogy. The videos/films provided a clear
understanding of art integrated learning to the participants.

Initiation of art integrated learning pedagogy by all DIET’s in Jammu

Announcement by educational officers of Jammu on the importance of implementing
Art Integrated Learning

100% attendance and involvement of all the participants
•
Various concepts from topics on subjects like Hindi, Science, Mathematics, Social
Science were taken to write compositions in local language
•
Almost 101 teachers, teacher trainers and resource persons were trained in the pedagogy
of Art Integrated Learning
•
Coverage of the training workshops in art integrated learning at Jammu and Kashmir
was undertaken by the local newspapers of the state.
