Changing Lives Welcome to your ASC! The Writing Lab Welcome to the Florissant Valley Academic Support Center (ASC), your partner in helping you reach your full academic potential. Once here, you will discover a number of free services designed to help you reach your goals: Supplemental Instruction, the Math and Science Lab, the Writing Lab, Peer and Group Tutoring and our Speech lab. The ASC is here to help you understand course content and develop the skills and confidence you’ll need to be academically successful. The Writing Lab is a walk-in lab that helps you at any stage in the writing process. Professional tutors help you with understanding the assignment, organizing your ideas, outlining a draft, revising a document into a reader-centered composition, and learning proofreading techniques, all in an effort to make you a stronger, more confident writer. Supplemental Instruction (SI) The Supplemental Instruction program, one of the campus’ most popular academic support programs, targets and supports historically difficult courses. Individuals with expertise in your subject matter attend the class you are taking and exhibit good student behavior. Usually before and after class, Supplemental Instruction Leaders, or SI leaders, hold group study sessions that supplement or help provide a clearer understanding of the subject material. On average, students who regularly participate in SI sessions for targeted courses earn a full letter grade higher than those who do not. The Math and Science Lab The Math and Science Lab, staffed with professional tutors, is a walk-in service that meets you where you are and helps get you where you need to be. You can feel comfortable going in with uncertainty and leaving with confidence. Our tutors have a wide range of expertise in many math and science-related courses and are here to help you understand the concepts and content related to your subject area. Peer/Group Tutoring Our Peer/Group Tutoring program allows you to work with a fellow student who has successfully completed the course you’re currently taking. The Peer /Group Tutoring program is intended to parallel what is going on in class for the duration of the semester. Handouts, study skills strategies based on your learning style and worksheets are provided to assist in the learning process. During your weekly scheduled meetings, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions about the subject matter and gain a better understanding of the material. Speech and Communications Lab And, if the thought of public speaking gets you nervous, visit our Speech and Communications Lab. Here, you will work one-on-one with a professional speech instructor to enhance your communication skills. And, if you want to see and hear “the big picture,” you can record and review your speech on video. Whether it’s giving a speech in class, learning how to effectively communicate at a job fair, or strengthening your interview skills for your dream job, the Speech and Communications Lab can help you look and sound your best.
