Master of Education Degree in Secondary Education with a Specialization in Teaching

The program consists of a minimum of 36 semester hours of coursework for the M.Ed. in Secondary Education –
with a Specialization in Teaching. All courses are three semester hours with the exception of Practice Teaching
Fieldwork. This program is designed to accelerate teacher certification for students who have already
demonstrated content mastery.
A student can earn a master’s degree simultaneously with teaching certification. Kutztown University offers 7-12
teaching certificates in the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, General
Science, Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics, English, and Social Studies. The K-12 teaching certification
areas include: Spanish and German.
Program Structure and Field Component:
Students who work in the cohort group format can begin the course work in the summer, take course work in the
fall and complete the program by taking two accelerated courses and their 12-week clinical experience in the
spring.
Students will complete 190 hours of Education Exploration. These field experiences will be documented and
analyzed in the course, Education Exploration, which is a prerequisite for the capstone clinical experience.
General Admission Requirements:
1.
Score of passed Praxis II test in the content area sent to Kutztown University.
2.
Bachelor’s degree grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in area of certification or related area or evidence of
achievement of a 3.0 post-bachelor’s GPA (minimum of four content area courses).
3.
Completion of graduate entrance requirements.
4.
Act 34 and 151 clearances completed. Completed FBI clearance report from Cogent, Inc. in PA.
TB Test Evidence.
5.
Successful interview with Department of Secondary Education upon acceptance.
Additional Requirements for Certification/Graduation:
Candidates seeking an M.Ed. in Secondary Education with Initial Certification must satisfy all
curriculum requirements, all University requirements, and fulfill the following:
 Pass the Praxis II content knowledge test for the respective area of certification. Foreign
Language certification requires the Fundamental Subjects test in addition to the Praxis II.
 Maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program.
 Complete appropriate certification/graduate paperwork to process certification/graduate degree as
noted below:
 For certification: Submit to College of Education Dean’s Office the PDE 338-G form with
money order and Declaration of Intent to Complete form
 For degree: Apply for graduation through the College of Graduate Studies.
